Can you use Claude to build a lead list and draft outreach?

By Ranjit Bhinge, founder of Blur Studio · Updated · 8 min read

Short answer: Yes, if you're already on Amplemarket and either Claude Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. Amplemarket publishes an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server exposing over 50 tools, so you can ask Claude directly to find prospects, build a list, draft a sequence, or check call and reply data, without leaving the chat. It signs in through your existing Amplemarket account over OAuth, no API key needed. For most non-technical business owners, this is worth setting up once you're comfortable with the core product, not something to start with on day one.

You've heard you can now connect a sales tool directly to Claude or ChatGPT and ask it to do outreach work for you, and you're trying to work out if that's real or oversold.

I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.

It's real, and it's a genuinely different way of working than opening the dashboard of Amplemarket, a B2B contact database and outreach platform, clicking through screens, and exporting a list. MCP, Model Context Protocol, is a standard that lets an AI assistant like Claude call a tool's actual functions directly inside a conversation, rather than you manually operating that tool's interface yourself. Amplemarket has built one of these for its own platform, and as of this writing it exposes more than 50 tools covering prospecting, enrichment, list building, sequencing, inbox management and analytics, all from inside Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Grok or Perplexity.

The honest question isn't "can this work," it's "is this the right entry point for you right now," and for a lot of people the answer is not yet.

The options, from least to most effort

Manual prompts with no connection. You can already ask Claude or ChatGPT to help draft a message, suggest a list-building strategy, or think through a sequence structure, with zero setup, just by describing what you're trying to do and pasting in whatever context you have. This is free and immediate, and it's the right starting point if you're not yet sure an AI assistant is actually going to speed up this part of your work.

Clay. A data enrichment and automation platform with more raw control than Amplemarket's MCP, built specifically for people who want to wire together custom workflows across many data sources. It has a steeper setup curve and is worth evaluating directly against your specific technical comfort, since it's positioned more for builders than for someone wanting a quick connection to an existing sales tool.

Amplemarket MCP. This is the "connect your existing sales platform directly to your AI assistant" option, and it's the one that requires the least new learning if you're already using Amplemarket day to day, since you're extending a tool you know rather than adopting a new one.

The real distinction between manual prompts and either of the connected options isn't really about intelligence, Claude and ChatGPT are capable of similar reasoning either way, it's about whether the assistant can actually act on live data or only talk about it. A manual prompt can help you think through a targeting strategy or draft message copy, but it has no access to your actual CRM records, your actual call history, or your actual account list. An MCP connection changes that: the assistant can query and act on real, current data from your account rather than working from whatever you happened to paste in.

Where the Amplemarket MCP actually fits, and what it requires

The Amplemarket MCP connects to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Grok, Grok Bot and Perplexity, and any platform that supports remote MCP servers can connect through a custom connector URL. Setup is through OAuth, meaning you sign in with your existing Amplemarket account, no API key to generate or manage. One specific requirement worth knowing before you try this with Claude: Amplemarket's own setup guidance says the Claude connection requires a Claude Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan, not the free tier, and Amplemarket is in the process of being published to the Claude Connectors Directory for broader, easier access. If you're on Claude's free plan specifically, this won't be available to you yet without upgrading.

Once connected, the tool list is genuinely broad: searching and researching prospects, enriching company data, validating emails, mapping an organization chart, building and managing lead lists, creating and enrolling leads into multichannel sequences, reading and triaging your inbox, and pulling analytics across sequences and campaigns. A September 2026 update added three more capabilities specifically: managing sequences end to end (launch, pause, resume, archive), pulling call metadata and full transcripts with AI summaries, and referencing tracked competitor battlecards during outreach, all without leaving the chat window. Data enrichment through the MCP uses credits at Amplemarket's standard in-app rate, so this isn't free beyond whatever your existing Amplemarket plan already includes. You can see the full tool list and try it against your own account by starting a trial on Amplemarket's site.

How to actually try this, step by step

  1. Write down the exact job. Not "use AI for sales," but "ask Claude to build a list of 50 companies matching a specific profile and draft an opening sequence."
  2. Confirm your Claude plan. Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise, not Free, is required for the Claude connection as of this writing.
  3. Go to Settings, then Integrations in Amplemarket, and follow the guided setup for your specific AI platform. This is a one-time OAuth sign-in, not an ongoing credential to manage.
  4. Start with a narrow, well-defined ask rather than something open-ended. "Find 20 companies in [industry] with 10-50 employees that posted a [specific role] job in the last 30 days" works better than "find me good leads." For a small hand-picked list, email, phone and social outreach for a short list lays out the channels.
  5. Review everything before it sends, the same rule as every other AI-assisted step in outreach. The MCP gives Claude the ability to act on your Amplemarket data; it doesn't remove the need to check what it produced. For the writing itself, see how to write personal first emails faster.

A second scenario: a technical founder building a repeatable weekly workflow

The single-request case above is the common starting point. It looks different for someone comfortable scripting or chaining prompts together, who wants a repeatable weekly routine rather than a one-off ask: for example, every Monday, pull last week's call transcripts and summaries through the MCP, have Claude flag any deal where sentiment seemed to shift negative, and draft a re-engagement note for review. This is where the MCP's breadth, 50+ tools rather than a handful, actually starts to matter, because a repeatable workflow benefits from having call data, sequence data and competitive data all reachable from the same conversation rather than stitched together from several separate exports.

The gotcha at this level: a multi-step workflow run through a chat interface doesn't have the same guardrails a dedicated automation platform would, meaning there's no built-in retry logic or error alerting if one step in the chain fails silently. For anything you're running weekly rather than testing once, I'd treat the first several runs as supervised, checking the full output each time, before trusting it to run with minimal review.

There's also a cost dimension specific to this scenario worth planning for. Each enrichment or data-pulling action through the MCP uses credits at the standard in-app rate, the same credits your regular dashboard usage draws from. A weekly workflow that pulls transcripts and runs enrichment across dozens of accounts every Monday adds up differently than a single one-off list-building request, and it's worth tracking credit usage for a month after you set up a recurring routine like this, rather than assuming the cost is negligible just because each individual action feels small.

What I'd tell a non-technical business owner specifically

If you're the person this page is actually for, someone running a business or small team without a technical background, here's my honest read: this is worth setting up once you're comfortable with Amplemarket's core product on its own, not as your first move. Learning what good outreach looks like by using the dashboard directly gives you the judgment to actually evaluate what Claude produces when you connect it. Skipping straight to "ask Claude to do my outreach" without that baseline makes it much harder to tell a good AI-generated list from a bad one, since you won't have a feel for what normal output should look like. Once replies come in, replying to leads faster when replies pile up helps you keep up.

What's oversold here: the framing that connecting an AI assistant to your sales tools removes the work rather than changing its shape. It still requires you to write good prompts, review the output, and make judgment calls about fit and relevance. The work moves from clicking through a dashboard to writing a clear request and checking the answer, it doesn't disappear.

I'd also flag a subtler issue that's easy to miss the first few times you try this: an AI assistant with direct access to your actual sales data can act with a confidence that masks when it's gotten something wrong. A manual prompt that hallucinates a fact is usually obviously wrong because it's clearly making something up. An MCP-connected assistant pulling from real data but misinterpreting a filter, say, including companies just outside your actual target size range, produces a list that looks entirely legitimate, because every individual record is real, even though the selection logic was off. Spot-check a sample of the actual results against your own criteria, not just skim the summary the assistant gives you of what it did.

When to skip this, and when it's worth a custom build

Skip the MCP setup specifically if you're not yet comfortable with AI connectors generally, or if you're still learning Amplemarket's core workflow. Most non-technical owners genuinely should wait on this one until the core product is second nature, since adding an AI connector on top of an unfamiliar tool just compounds the learning curve rather than simplifying anything. There's no urgency here either; the tools and the connector aren't going away, and a slower, more confident adoption beats rushing into it and losing trust in the whole workflow after one bad result.

Where this goes past a setup question: if what you actually need is a scheduled, unattended workflow (the Monday routine above, running automatically rather than you prompting it manually each time), with proper error handling and logging if something fails, that's a custom build on top of Amplemarket's MCP or API, not a chat-based habit. I build exactly that kind of automation for clients, and if you've got a half-working prompt-based routine already, turning it into something reliable and unattended is usually faster than starting from scratch. The hand-off problem is covered in how to stop leads falling between your outreach tool and your CRM.

Questions people ask

Do I need a paid Claude plan to use the Amplemarket MCP?

Yes, as of this writing, Amplemarket's own setup guidance requires Claude Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise for the Claude connection specifically, not the free tier. Amplemarket is being published to the Claude Connectors Directory, which may broaden access over time, but check current requirements before assuming your plan qualifies.

Does the Amplemarket MCP need an API key?

No. Setup is through OAuth, meaning you sign in with your existing Amplemarket account directly. Each user operates under their own Amplemarket permissions and login rather than a shared API key.

What can Claude actually do once connected through the Amplemarket MCP?

Over 50 tools covering prospect search and enrichment, email validation, org chart mapping, building and managing lead lists, creating and enrolling leads into sequences, reading and triaging your inbox, pulling analytics, managing sequences end to end, accessing call transcripts and summaries, and referencing competitor battlecards.

Does using Claude through the MCP cost extra beyond my Amplemarket plan?

Data enrichment actions through the MCP use credits at Amplemarket's standard in-app rate, the same as using those features directly in the dashboard. There's no separate MCP-specific fee beyond your existing plan and credit usage.

Is Clay a better option than Amplemarket's MCP for building lead lists with AI?

Clay offers more raw control for custom, multi-source workflows but has a steeper setup curve. If you're already using Amplemarket and want the least new learning, the MCP connection is the simpler entry point; if you need to combine many different data sources in custom ways, Clay is worth evaluating directly.

Should a non-technical business owner start with the MCP connection right away?

I'd recommend against it. Get comfortable with Amplemarket's core dashboard and workflow first, so you have a feel for what good output looks like, before connecting an AI assistant and trying to judge what it produces without that baseline.

Can I run a fully automated weekly workflow through Claude and the MCP without checking it?

Not safely, at least not initially. A chat-based multi-step workflow doesn't have the retry logic or error alerting a dedicated automation platform would. Supervise the first several runs fully before trusting any recurring workflow to run with minimal review.
