Netlify vs Lovable hosting: where should your AI-built app actually live

By Ranjit Bhinge, founder of Blur Studio · Updated · 5 min read

Short answer: Lovable, an AI app builder that writes working software from a plain-language description, hosts what it builds through its own built-in product, Lovable Cloud, included on every plan at no extra cost for most small or new apps. A custom domain on Lovable requires a paid Pro plan or higher, starting at $25 a month for 100 credits as of October 2026. Netlify is a separate, dedicated hosting platform: free to start at $0 a month, with its own deploy pipeline, deploy previews, and AI-assisted editing through Agent Runners. Moving a Lovable-built app to Netlify makes sense once you want more hosting control, a cheaper custom domain, or you're bringing in a developer to finish the app. Staying on Lovable Cloud makes sense while you're still testing the idea and want the absolute least setup.

You built your app in Lovable and now want to know whether to keep using its built-in hosting or move the whole thing to Netlify.

I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.

Lovable is an AI app builder, a tool that writes a working app for you from a plain-language description, handling the screens, the logic, and the database. It hosts whatever it builds through its own product, Lovable Cloud, so by default your app runs on Lovable's infrastructure from the moment you publish it, with no separate hosting decision required. Netlify is a dedicated hosting platform, built specifically to take code (whether written by you, a developer, or exported from an AI builder) and serve it fast, with its own deploy pipeline, previews, and tooling. This article covers when it's worth moving your Lovable-built app off Lovable Cloud and onto Netlify instead.

When staying on Lovable Cloud makes sense

  • You're still testing the idea: No separate hosting decision to make, no exporting code, nothing to configure.
  • Your app is small and lightly used: Lovable's own pricing says hosting costs nothing extra for most smaller or newer apps on the included credit grant.
  • You don't need a custom domain yet: A Lovable-provided subdomain is fine for sharing a prototype with a few people.

When moving to Netlify makes sense

  • You want a custom domain without paying for Lovable's Pro plan just for that: Netlify includes custom domains with free SSL on every plan, including its free tier.
  • A developer is finishing or hardening the app: Once a developer is involved reviewing security, payments, or data handling, a standard Git-based deploy on a dedicated platform is a more natural fit than staying inside a builder's own chat-driven workflow.
  • You want deploy previews tied to Git, not just Lovable's internal preview: Useful once more than one person is touching the code.
  • You want to keep making small AI-assisted changes after the move: Netlify's Agent Runners lets you describe a change in plain language and review it in a deploy preview, a similar workflow to what you're used to from Lovable, just on different infrastructure.

The actual steps to move your app off Lovable Cloud

  1. Export or sync your code to GitHub. Check Lovable's current export options for your plan; many AI builders, including Lovable, support syncing the underlying code to a GitHub repository you control.
  2. Connect that repository to Netlify. Go to Netlify's deploy page, choose GitHub, authorize access, and select the repository.
  3. Set your build command and publish directory. Netlify usually auto-detects these for common frameworks, but check them against what your Lovable-exported app actually needs to build correctly.
  4. Move any environment variables and secrets. API keys, database connection strings, and similar values need to be added in Netlify's own environment variable settings; they won't carry over automatically from Lovable.
  5. Test a deploy preview before switching your live domain. Confirm the app works identically on Netlify before pointing your actual domain at it.
  6. Connect your custom domain and wait for SSL to provision. This typically completes within a day; my guide to connecting a domain to Netlify covers this step in detail.

The pitfalls to check before you move

Your database may not move automatically. If your app's data lives inside Lovable Cloud's own database, moving the frontend code to Netlify doesn't automatically move your data with it; check what database Lovable actually used and whether it can be exported or whether you need to migrate to a separate database service.

Backend logic built specifically for Lovable Cloud may need rewriting. Any server-side logic that assumed Lovable's specific backend environment may need adapting to run as a Netlify function or a separate backend service instead, since Netlify's hosting model and Lovable Cloud's aren't a one-to-one match.

Authentication and secrets need re-wiring. Login systems, API keys, and third-party integrations configured inside Lovable need to be reconfigured on whatever you move them to, not just copied over.

What this actually costs at a real usage level

Say your app is past the prototype stage and genuinely has a few hundred active users checking in regularly. On Lovable, once you're on Pro for the custom domain anyway, a moderate-usage app typically sits somewhere in the $25 to $50 range covering 100 to 200 credits a month, though actual credit consumption depends heavily on how much you're still using Lovable's AI chat to make changes versus how settled the app already is. On Netlify, that same app, once moved, would likely sit on Personal at $9 a month or Pro at $20 a month depending on bandwidth and whether more than one person needs access, with the custom domain already included free either way. The practical pattern is that Lovable's pricing is weighted toward ongoing AI-assisted development, while Netlify's is weighted toward running an already-built app, which is exactly why a move often makes sense once the app has stabilized and you're no longer making constant AI-driven changes to it.

A hybrid approach worth considering

You don't have to choose all-or-nothing. Some teams keep using Lovable's AI chat for genuinely new feature development in a staging version of the app, then deploy the stable, finished result to Netlify for the production version customers actually use. This gets you Lovable's fast AI-assisted iteration where it's genuinely useful, and Netlify's cheaper, more controllable hosting for the version that actually needs to stay up reliably.

A different starting point worth knowing about

If you're earlier in the process and haven't committed to a builder yet, it's worth knowing that not every AI app builder locks you into its own hosting the same way. Emergent is another AI app builder, similar to Lovable in that you describe what you want and it writes and hosts the app, but it emphasizes GitHub integration and code ownership from the start, which can make moving to a different host later a smaller step if that flexibility matters to you.

Need something completely custom?

Everything above is a path to get an AI-built app running quick and cheap on infrastructure you don't own outright. But sometimes the honest answer is that neither fits, and what you actually need is something custom that you own, built uniquely for your business from the ground up, with AI thoughtfully designed into the parts of it that your processes actually benefit from. An asset that grows in value, not a generic, one-size-fits-all boilerplate that's an expense with a lock-in. This is a complete bespoke build, and it's something I do very well. Questions people ask

Does moving from Lovable to Netlify cost anything upfront?

Netlify's free plan costs $0 a month and covers a low-traffic app comfortably. The real cost is the time it takes to export your code, reconfigure environment variables, and test the move, not a hosting fee.

Will my app's data automatically move from Lovable Cloud to Netlify?

No. Moving your frontend code to Netlify doesn't automatically bring your database with it. Check what database Lovable used and plan a separate migration or export for your actual data.

Do I need a developer to move a Lovable app to Netlify?

Not always for a simple, mostly static app, but any app with real backend logic, logins, or a database benefits from a developer reviewing the move, since the two platforms don't share a backend model.

Is a custom domain cheaper on Netlify than on Lovable?

Yes. Netlify includes custom domains with free SSL on every plan including its free tier, while Lovable requires its Pro plan or higher, starting at $25 a month for 100 credits.

Can I keep using Lovable's AI chat to edit my app after moving it to Netlify?

Not in the same way, since Lovable's chat interface is built around its own hosted environment. Netlify's own Agent Runners offers a similar plain-language edit workflow once your app is on Netlify instead.

Is Emergent a direct substitute for Lovable?

It's a similar kind of tool, an AI app builder that writes and hosts an app from a plain-language description, with its own pricing and GitHub-integration approach. Compare both directly against your specific project before switching.

Roughly what does it cost to have an AI-built app finished and hosted properly?

As a broad reference, fixes and finishes start at around $1,500, and new builds start higher, always a fixed price agreed in writing before I start, never an hourly rate.
