Nouswise vs NotebookLM vs ChatGPT Projects: picking the right one
Short answer: Nouswise, NotebookLM (which Google rebranded this year to Gemini Notebook) and ChatGPT Projects all let you point an AI at your own material and get grounded answers back, but they're built differently. Nouswise is a dedicated document-research tool with source-linked answers and a free plan covering 100 sources. Gemini Notebook is Google's notebook-style research tool, free with 100 notebooks and 50 sources each, with higher limits bundled into a paid Google AI subscription. ChatGPT Projects is a feature inside ChatGPT itself, a workspace that groups chats, files and instructions for one ongoing task, rather than a separately priced product. Pick Nouswise if source-traceability across many documents is the actual job. Pick Gemini Notebook if you want free, study-guide-style outputs from Google. Pick ChatGPT Projects if you already live in ChatGPT and want file continuity inside it.
You're comparing Nouswise against NotebookLM and ChatGPT Projects and want a straight answer on what each one actually is and which fits your situation.

All three of these tools solve a version of the same problem: you have your own documents or material, and you want an AI to answer questions grounded in that material specifically, rather than guessing from its general training. How each one does that, and what it costs, differs enough to actually matter for which one you pick.
What each tool actually is
Nouswise is a dedicated AI research tool: you upload documents and data, ask questions in plain language, and every answer links back to the exact source it came from. Beyond plain answers, it can generate reports, audio and video recaps, and infographics from the same material, and its higher tiers can run multi-step tasks and connect to your existing business tools.
NotebookLM, which Google rebranded this year to Gemini Notebook, is Google's notebook-style research tool. You add a set of sources to a notebook, your own documents, slides or links, and it answers questions, writes summaries, and can turn that material into study guides, slide decks, mind maps, or an audio or video overview, grounded only in what you gave it. If Gemini Notebook feels limited for a team, NotebookLM alternatives for business lists eight other options.
ChatGPT Projects is a feature built into ChatGPT itself rather than a separate product. It lets you group a set of chats, uploaded files and custom instructions into one dedicated workspace for an ongoing task, so the AI keeps the context of that project without you repeating the background in every new chat. The roundup of AI tools for chatting with your business documents covers it alongside Claude and Perplexity.
Price and limits compared
| Tool | Free tier | Paid tier | How it's priced |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nouswise | 100 sources, 100MB storage, 5 recaps/day, 8 activities/day | Essential $19.99/mo (300 sources); Pro $49.99/mo (unlimited sources); Enterprise custom | Sold as its own standalone subscription |
| Gemini Notebook (NotebookLM) | 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook | Plus: 200 notebooks/100 sources; Pro: 500 notebooks/300 sources; Ultra: 500 notebooks/500-600 sources | Bundled into a Google AI subscription (Google AI Plus/Pro/Ultra), not sold on its own; Google's own pricing page only confirmed a monthly price for me in AED (76.99 for Google AI Pro), confirm your own region's USD price directly |
| ChatGPT Projects | Available inside ChatGPT's free tier with reduced limits | Fuller use tied to a ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription | A feature inside ChatGPT, not its own product; I couldn't pull OpenAI's current pricing page live while researching this (it returned an access-denied response), so confirm current ChatGPT plan prices directly on openai.com/chatgpt/pricing |
Nouswise is the only one of the three sold as its own dedicated subscription with its own price tag. Gemini Notebook and ChatGPT Projects both ride inside a broader subscription you might already be paying for, Google AI or ChatGPT Plus, which is worth factoring in if you're already paying for one of those. If none of the three suits you, Nouswise alternatives covers Microsoft Copilot and a locally-run model too.
The 3 things that actually differ
- What "grounded" means in practice. Nouswise and Gemini Notebook both restrict answers to the sources you've explicitly given them, with citations back to those sources. ChatGPT Projects keeps your files and chat history together in one workspace, but the underlying ChatGPT model can still draw on its general training alongside your uploaded files unless you're careful about how you prompt it, a meaningfully looser kind of grounding than the other two.
- Output format. Nouswise leans into generated reports, audio and video recaps and infographics. Gemini Notebook leans into study-guide-style outputs: slide decks, mind maps, and audio or video overviews aimed at learning and summarizing. ChatGPT Projects stays in ChatGPT's native chat format, it doesn't generate the same range of structured outputs the other two do.
- Who it's sold to. Nouswise's tiers scale toward business and enterprise use, with Enterprise-only on-premises deployment and custom data sources. Gemini Notebook scales through a consumer and productivity subscription aimed at students, researchers and knowledge workers. ChatGPT Projects is an organizational feature inside a general-purpose assistant, not built specifically around document research at all.
A worked example: the same research task, three ways
Say you're a solo consultant with twelve client reports from the past year, and a new prospect asks a question that feels like something you've already answered before. Put those twelve reports into Nouswise's free Starter plan, ask the question in plain language, and you get an answer that points back to the specific report and page it came from, something you could literally show the prospect if asked where that figure came from. Put the same twelve reports into Gemini Notebook's free tier, well within its 50-sources-per-notebook limit, and you get a similar sourced answer, plus the option to generate a quick audio overview if you'd rather listen through a summary than read one. Upload the same reports into a ChatGPT Project, and you'll get a reasonable answer too, but it's worth double-checking whether the model pulled the figure from your actual report or filled a gap with something plausible-sounding from its general training, since ChatGPT Projects doesn't restrict itself to your files the way the other two do.
None of the three is "wrong" here. The difference shows up specifically when you need to trust the answer enough to act on it without re-checking the source document yourself.
Privacy and data handling, briefly
Nouswise states that all data is encrypted at rest and in transit, and claims SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type I/II compliance, with cloud infrastructure in Europe and the US on standard plans and on-premises or dedicated regional data centers available on its Enterprise plan. That's Nouswise's own published claim, not independently audited here. Google and OpenAI both publish their own data-handling terms for Gemini Notebook and ChatGPT respectively, and the honest answer for any of the three is the same: for routine business material, a reputable vendor's stated encryption and compliance is generally reasonable, and for anything genuinely sensitive or regulated, get the vendor's actual written terms before uploading anything, rather than relying on a marketing page alone.
Pick by use
- You need source-traceable answers across business documents, with multi-step task automation: Nouswise, its design is specifically built for this, and it's the only one of the three sold as a dedicated business tool with an Enterprise tier.
- You're a student or researcher who wants free, study-guide-style outputs from your own material: Gemini Notebook (NotebookLM), its free tier is generous (100 notebooks, 50 sources each) and its output formats are built for learning and summarizing.
- You already live inside ChatGPT for everything else and just want file and chat continuity for one ongoing task: ChatGPT Projects, it's the natural choice if switching tools entirely isn't worth the friction for you.
- You need the data to never leave infrastructure you control at all: none of the three is the strongest answer to that specific requirement, a locally-run model is the stronger fit there, which my guide on uploading client documents to AI tools safely covers in more depth.
Need something completely custom?
Everything above is a path to get it running quick and cheap. But sometimes the honest answer is that none of those quite fit, and what you actually need is something custom that you own, built uniquely for your business from the ground up, with AI thoughtfully designed into the parts of it that your processes actually benefit from. An asset that grows in value, not a generic, one-size-fits-all boilerplate that's an expense with a lock-in. This is a complete bespoke build, and it's something I do very well. Questions people ask
Is NotebookLM still called NotebookLM?
Google has rebranded it to Gemini Notebook this year, though the underlying product, a notebook-style tool that answers from your own sources, is the same one most people still search for under the NotebookLM name.
Which of the three has the best free plan?
Gemini Notebook's free tier (100 notebooks, 50 sources each) and Nouswise's free Starter plan (100 sources) are both genuinely usable rather than crippled trials. ChatGPT Projects is available free inside ChatGPT's free tier but with the most reduced limits of the three.
Does ChatGPT Projects answer only from my uploaded files?
Not strictly. ChatGPT Projects keeps your files and chats organized in one workspace, but the model underneath can still draw on its general training alongside your files, a looser form of grounding than Nouswise or Gemini Notebook, which restrict answers to your given sources specifically.
Can I use Nouswise and Gemini Notebook for the same project?
Yes, there's no conflict in trying both on the same material, since they're separate tools and separate subscriptions. Many people settle on one once they see which output format and pricing model fits their actual workflow better.
Which one is cheapest for a small team?
It depends on what you already pay for. If your team already has a Google AI subscription or ChatGPT Plus, the respective notebook or Projects feature is effectively included at no extra cost. If you're starting from zero, Nouswise's free Starter plan or its $19.99 Essential plan is a clear, standalone price point.
Is there a fully private, local alternative to all three?
Yes. A locally-run model such as Ollama keeps everything on your own hardware with no third party involved at all, at the cost of needing the technical setup and hardware to run it well. My guide on uploading client documents to AI tools covers this tradeoff in more depth.
Can I trust any of the three with sensitive client documents?
For routine business documents, a reputable vendor's stated encryption and compliance is generally reasonable for any of the three. For genuinely sensitive or regulated material, get the actual written compliance terms from the vendor directly before uploading anything, rather than relying on a marketing page's claim.
