How much does it cost to build an AI app in 2026?
Short answer: Most app projects reviewed on Clutch cost $10,000 to $49,999, and the average project there is about $90,780. AI apps often run higher, and one AI firm's published guide puts them at $30,000 to $500,000 or more, based on how complex they are. On top of the build, you pay a monthly bill for AI model usage and hosting, plus upkeep every year.
You want a real number for what an AI app costs to build, not a vague "it depends" from a sales call.
I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build apps, business software, and AI agents and workflows, one project at a time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page.
The cost to build an AI app has two parts. First you pay to build it. Then you pay every month to run it, because each AI answer has a small usage fee. Many owners plan for the first part and get surprised by the second.
This page gives you real market ranges from cited sources, the current AI usage prices, and the things that push your price up or down. These are market figures. They are not Blur Studio's prices.
How much does it cost to build an AI app?
No single number fits every app. A useful public source is Clutch, a site that collects verified client reviews of app firms. Its 2026 pricing guide says most app projects reviewed there cost between $10,000 and $49,999. The average project was about $90,780 and took about 11 months.
Those figures cover all apps. AI apps tend to cost more because of the extra testing and data work. Aloa, an AI development firm, published a 2026 guide with these ranges. The guide does not say how it got them, so treat them as one firm's view.
| Type of AI app | Range in Aloa's guide | Typical time in Aloa's guide |
|---|---|---|
| Simple tool built on an existing AI model | $30,000 to $80,000 | 6 to 12 weeks |
| Custom system built on your own data | $80,000 to $200,000 | 3 to 6 months |
| Large production system | $200,000 to $500,000+ | 6 to 12+ months |
| Proof of concept (a small test build) | $15,000 to $40,000 | 4 to 8 weeks |
Use these ranges to sense check quotes. If one quote is far below every other one, ask what it leaves out.
What drives the cost of an AI app?
The price depends on a few big choices. Each one below can move your quote a lot.
Features
Every screen, user type and rule adds work. A tool with one job and one type of user costs far less than a platform with buyers, sellers and admins. Links to other systems, such as your CRM, payments or accounting tool, also add cost. Clutch notes that building separate apps for iPhone and Android can roughly double the price.
Data
AI that answers from your own files needs those files cleaned, sorted and kept up to date. If your data lives in old spreadsheets or many tools, the team must pull it together first. Good, tidy data lowers your build cost.
AI work
A simple app sends a question to a ready-made model and shows the answer. A more complex app checks the answer, looks up facts in your files first, or takes actions in other tools. Aloa's guide says fine-tuning a model, which means training it further on your own examples, can add $10,000 to $50,000.
Testing and safety
AI can give wrong answers with confidence. The more harm a wrong answer can cause, the more testing you need. Apps for health, money or legal work need more checks and a person in the loop.
The team you hire
A freelancer, an agency and an in-house team all price work in different ways. My guide on how to hire AI developers compares them.
How much do AI model usage fees cost each month?
AI providers charge by the token. A token is a small piece of text. OpenAI says one token is about four characters of English, and 100 tokens is about 75 words. You pay for the text you send in (input) and the text the AI writes back (output).
Here are prices for some current models, per one million tokens, from each provider's own pricing page in October 2026.
| Model | Input per 1M tokens | Output per 1M tokens |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI gpt-6-astra | $10.00 | $50.00 |
| OpenAI gpt-6.1-sol | $2.00 | $10.00 |
| OpenAI gpt-6-luna | $0.10 | $0.50 |
| Anthropic Claude Opus 5.5 | $4 | $20 |
| Anthropic Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $2 | $10 |
| Anthropic Claude Haiku 5.5 | $0.10 | $0.50 |
| Google Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview | $2.00 | $12.00 |
| Google Gemini 3.8 Flash | $0.75 | $3.75 |
Two of these prices go up for very long prompts. Claude Haiku 5.5 costs $0.50 in and $2.50 out once a prompt is over 100,000 tokens. Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview costs $4.00 in and $18.00 out once a prompt is over 200,000 tokens. Most chat apps send far shorter prompts than that.
A worked example
Here is a simple example with my own numbers. Say your support chat handles 30,000 chats a month. Each chat sends about 3,000 tokens in and gets about 500 tokens back. That is 90 million input tokens and 15 million output tokens a month.
- On gpt-6.1-sol or Claude Sonnet 5.5: About $180 for input plus $150 for output, so about $330 a month.
- On Gemini 3.8 Flash: About $67.50 plus $56.25, so about $124 a month.
- On gpt-6-luna: About $9 plus $7.50, so about $17 a month.
The same app can cost 20 times more to run on one model than on another. A good team tests the smaller models first and moves up only when the answers are not good enough.
Prices change
Model prices move often. Google's page says Gemini 3.8 Flash will double to $1.50 input and $7.50 output from January 1, 2027. Anthropic says its batch option, for jobs that do not need an instant answer, saves 50%. Ask your developer to check prices again before launch.
What does an AI app cost to host and keep running?
Hosting is where your app lives online. Many small apps start on low monthly plans. For example, Supabase's Pro plan starts at $25 a month, and Vercel's Pro plan lists $20 a month. Bigger apps with more users and data pay more.
Phone apps also have store fees. Apple charges $99 per membership year for its developer program. Google Play charges a one-time $25 fee to register.
Then there is upkeep. Apps need fixes, security updates and changes when AI models are replaced. Aloa's guide puts yearly maintenance at 15% to 25% of the first build cost. Plan for it before you build.
How can you lower the cost of an AI app?
These steps cut cost without hurting quality.
- Start with one job: Build the single feature that saves the most time. Add more once people use it.
- Use a ready-made model: Most businesses do not need to train their own model.
- Pick the smallest model that works: Test cheap models first, as the example above shows.
- Clean your data first: Tidy files cost less to connect.
- Start with a web app: One web app works on phones and computers.
- Keep a person in the loop: Human review can cost less than building perfect AI checks for rare cases.
If you are testing a new idea, a small first version is often the best spend. My guide to AI MVP development explains how to scope one.
When is building an AI app not worth the cost?
Skip the custom build if a paid tool already does the job for a monthly fee. Also skip it if you cannot name the task it will speed up, or the money it will save or make. A custom app makes sense when the task is core to your business and no tool fits it well.
How does Blur Studio think about cost?
When an owner asks me about cost, I start with the job the app must do and the result it must bring. Then I plan the smallest version that gets that result, and I estimate the monthly AI and hosting bill along with the build.
The AI and hosting accounts are in your name, along with the code, so you see the real bills yourself. After launch, I take care of the app and keep the usage bill under control as models and prices change. To see what to look for in a team, read my guide to choosing an AI app development company.
