How to pick an AI development company you can trust
Short answer: An AI development company builds software that uses AI to do real work in your business, such as answering customer questions, reading documents or sorting leads. Pick one that starts with your business problem, shows you working apps it has shipped, tests how often the AI gets things wrong, and hands you the code and the accounts. Skip any firm that promises perfect results or will not show you real work.
You're here because you're trying to work out how to pick an AI development company you can actually trust, not just the one with the slickest website.
I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build apps, business software, and AI agents and workflows, one project at a time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page.
An AI development company builds software that uses AI to do a job in your business. That job might be answering customer emails, pulling facts out of forms, or helping your team find answers fast. Many firms now sell AI development services, and they vary a lot in skill and honesty.
This guide is for owners who want to hire a team. I explain what these companies build, how to judge them, what to ask, and when you should not hire one at all.
What does an AI development company do?
An AI development company plans, builds and runs software that uses an AI model. An AI model is a program trained on huge amounts of text or images. It can read, write, sort and answer in plain language.
Most business projects do not build a new model from scratch. The team connects a ready-made model, such as one from OpenAI, Anthropic or Google, to your own data and tools. Then they build the screens, rules and checks around it so your staff and customers can use it safely.
A good firm does each of these jobs.
- Finds the right job for AI: It looks at your work and picks the task where AI saves the most time or money.
- Builds the app: It makes the screens, the logins, the database and the links to tools you already use.
- Tests the AI: It checks how often the AI gives a wrong answer and adds guard rails.
- Looks after it: It fixes problems, watches the monthly AI bill and updates the app as models change.
What can custom AI development do for a business?
Custom AI development means software built around your own process and data. Off-the-shelf tools fit many people a little. A custom build fits your business well.
Owners often ask me for these projects.
- Answers from your own files: A help tool that answers staff or customer questions from your manuals, policies and past emails.
- Document reading: An app that reads invoices, contracts or forms and puts the key facts into your system.
- Lead sorting: A tool that reads new inquiries, scores them and sends the best ones to your sales team first.
- Drafting: A tool that writes first drafts of quotes, reports or replies for a person to check and send.
- AI workflows: A chain of steps that runs on its own, such as reading an order, checking stock and emailing the customer.
If you already have software and want to add AI to it, read my guide to AI integration services. If you want a tool that takes actions by itself, see AI agent development.
How many businesses use AI right now?
Small firms use AI much less than big firms do. The US Census Bureau runs a survey of businesses every two weeks. As of May 3, 2026, 19.8% of US businesses said they used AI. Among firms with at least 250 workers, the share was 37%. Firms with four or fewer workers were under 20%.
A global survey shows much higher use. McKinsey surveyed 1,719 people in 97 countries in May and June 2026. Nearly nine in ten said their company uses AI in at least one part of the business. But only 37% said AI had any effect on their profits.
That gap matters for you. Many companies use AI, yet far fewer get money back from it. The firm you hire should care about your results, and the tech should come second.
What is the difference between an AI software development company and an AI solutions company?
These names often mean the same thing. Some firms use "AI solutions company" for advice and planning. Some use "AI software development company" for teams that write the code. Ask each firm one plain question. Will you plan it, build it and look after it, or only one of those? The answer tells you more than the name.
How do you choose an AI development company?
Look for proof, clear talk and fair terms. Use these checks:
- Real apps you can try: Ask for live apps they built that use AI. A demo video is weaker proof than a working link.
- They start with your problem: A good team asks about your work, your customers and your numbers before it talks about models.
- They test for wrong answers: AI can state false things with confidence. NIST, the US standards agency, calls this "confabulation", which many people call hallucination. Ask how the firm finds and reduces these errors.
- They protect your data: Ask which AI provider they use and if that provider trains on your data. OpenAI, for example, says it does not train its models on business data sent through its API unless you opt in.
- You own it: You should own the code, the hosting accounts and the AI provider accounts. Get this in writing.
- They plan for after launch: Ask who fixes the app when a model changes or the AI bill jumps.
- They speak plainly: If you cannot follow their pitch, you will not be able to follow the project either.
What should you ask an AI development company before you sign?
Bring these questions to your first call:
- Which problem will this solve, and how will we measure it?
- Can I try two or three apps you shipped that use AI?
- Which AI model will you use, and why that one?
- What will the AI usage cost each month at my expected volume?
- How will you test the answers before launch?
- What happens when the AI gets something wrong in front of a customer?
- Who owns the code and the accounts from the first day?
- What does support look like after launch?

What red flags should make you walk away?
Be careful if you see any of these:
- Promises of perfect accuracy: No honest team can promise the AI will never be wrong.
- Big claims with no proof: In 2024 the Federal Trade Commission started a sweep called Operation AI Comply against false AI claims. The FTC chair at the time said, "Using AI tools to trick, mislead, or defraud people is illegal". Be wary of any firm that makes big AI claims it cannot prove.
- No working examples: Slides and mockups are easy to make. Live apps are hard.
- They keep the code: Some firms host everything in their own accounts. If you leave, you lose the app.
- A fixed price before they understand the job: A firm that quotes in the first five minutes is guessing.
- No talk about running costs: AI apps have a monthly usage bill. A firm that ignores it will surprise you later.
When should you not hire an AI development company?
Sometimes the right answer is to build nothing. Wait before you hire a firm if any of these fit you.
- A tool you can buy already does the job: Many tasks, like meeting notes or basic chat on a website, have good tools for a monthly fee.
- You cannot name the problem: "We need AI" is not a project. Start by listing the tasks that waste the most time.
- Your data is a mess: AI that answers from your files is only as good as those files. Clean them up first.
- A wrong answer would cause real harm and you have no person to check it: In areas like medical or legal advice, plan for a human to review the AI's work.

How does Blur Studio approach AI development?
Here is the approach I use. I think any owner should expect it from any firm they hire.
I start with the job, the people who do it today and the result you want. Then I pick the simplest build that gets that result. I test the AI on your real examples before anyone relies on it. The code, the hosting and the AI accounts all sit in your name. After launch, I take care of the app, which includes fixes, updates and keeping the AI bill under control.
I also finish apps that were started with AI builders like Lovable, Bolt, Replit or Cursor and then got stuck. Many owners come to me with half an app and need it made ready for real users.
Questions people ask
What does an AI development company do?
An AI development company builds software that uses an AI model to do work for your business, such as answering questions, reading documents or drafting replies. It connects the model to your data, builds the app around it, tests it and looks after it after launch.
How much does it cost to hire an AI development company?
The cost depends on the features, your data, how much the AI is used each month and the upkeep after launch. My guide to AI app development cost gives sourced market ranges and explains each cost driver.
Do I need to train my own AI model?
Most businesses do not need to train their own model. A team can connect a ready-made model from a provider like OpenAI, Anthropic or Google to your own files and tools. For most jobs, that is faster and cheaper.
Is my business data safe with an AI app?
It can be, if the team sets it up with care. Ask which AI provider the app uses, whether that provider trains on your data, where the data is stored and who can see it.
How long does it take to build an AI app?
A small AI tool with one clear job can often be built in weeks, while a larger system can take months. The scope, the state of your data and the number of tools it must connect to set the timeline.
