AI for ecommerce: where it helps an online store, and where to start

By Ranjit Bhinge, founder of Blur Studio · Updated · 6 min read

Short answer: AI helps online stores write product pages, answer customer questions day and night, suggest products and plan stock. Many store tools now include it, such as Shopify's Sidekick assistant and the AI agents in Gorgias, Klaviyo and Omnisend. The FTC's rule on fake reviews bans AI-written reviews from people who never used the product. Start with the one task that eats the most staff time, and check what the AI writes before customers see it.

Ranjit Bhinge

You run an online store and want to know exactly where AI actually helps.

I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.

Where does AI help an online store?

AI helps most with tasks that repeat many times a day and follow a pattern.

Product pages

Give AI the facts about an item, such as size, materials and care steps. It drafts a title, a description and a few bullet points in seconds. It can also rewrite the same item for Amazon, your site and a Google Shopping feed. You check every fact before it goes live, because AI can add details that are not true.

Customer support

Most store questions are the same few. Where is my order? Can I return this? Does it come in blue? An AI agent linked to your order data can answer these at any hour and pass the hard cases to a person. My guide to AI customer service agents covers how to set one up.

Search and product suggestions

AI search understands what shoppers mean, even when they type it loosely. A search for "warm boots for snow" can return the right items when no product uses those exact words. AI can also suggest items that go with what is in the cart.

Email and text marketing

AI can draft subject lines, write campaign copy and pick the best time to send to each person. It can also build customer groups from a plain sentence. The value depends on clean customer data, which is what a good CRM gives you.

Stock planning

AI can study past sales by week and season and flag items that will run out. It can also spot slow stock early, so you can discount it before it ties up cash. This works best once you have at least a year of sales data.

Reviews and returns

AI can sum up hundreds of reviews into the top praise and the top complaints for each product. It can also read return reasons and flag a product with a sizing or quality problem.

What AI tools do ecommerce stores use?

Many store tools now include AI. The details below come from each vendor's own page as of October 2026.

Shopify Sidekick

Shopify includes Sidekick, which it calls an "AI assistant for commerce", on every plan. Shopify says it is built in and ready to help you sell. Every plan also includes what Shopify calls "millions of tokens" of AI use. The Basic plan costs $39 a month billed monthly, or $29 a month billed yearly.

Gorgias AI Agent

Gorgias is a help desk for online stores. Its AI Agent comes with every plan, and Gorgias charges only when the agent resolves a conversation. The help desk itself is priced by tickets, from 50 to 5,000 a month, and never per agent. If Gorgias does not suit you, my Gorgias alternatives page lists other options.

Klaviyo Composer and Customer Agent

Klaviyo sells email, texts and a help desk for stores. It lists Composer, an AI marketing agent that creates campaigns and flows. It also lists a Customer Agent for AI support and selling. The free plan covers 250 active profiles and 500 emails a month, with $5 of Composer use each month.

Omnisend AI agents

Omnisend's Standard plan includes AI agents for forms and chat. Pro lists more agents, such as one for product suggestions. Some of these show as add-ons, so ask which ones your plan covers. Standard starts at $11.20 a month for 500 contacts. That is an offer price for paying three months up front at 30% off.

General AI assistants

Many store owners also use a general assistant to draft copy and answer supplier emails. If you paste in customer or sales data, use a business plan. ChatGPT Business costs $20 a user a month billed yearly, or $25 billed monthly. OpenAI says it does not train on Business workspace data.

Tool Main AI use Starting price (Oct 2026)
Shopify Sidekick Store questions and admin help Included on every Shopify plan
Gorgias AI Agent Support replies Charged per resolved conversation
Klaviyo Composer Campaigns and flows Free plan includes $5 of use a month
Omnisend Forms, chat and product suggestions $11.20 a month offer price
ChatGPT Business Drafting and research $20 a user a month billed yearly

What rules apply to AI in ecommerce?

Fake reviews

The FTC's rule on consumer reviews took effect on October 21, 2024. It bans reviews from people who don't exist or who never used the product. The FTC names AI-written fake reviews as one example. Businesses also can't pay for reviews that must be positive or negative. They can't hide bad reviews and then claim to show all of them. The rule lets the FTC seek fines from businesses that break it on purpose.

So use AI to sum up and reply to real reviews. Never use it to write reviews.

Chatbot disclosure

California's bot law took effect on July 1, 2019. It makes it unlawful to use a bot online to mislead a person about its artificial identity in order to push a sale. A business that clearly tells people the chat is a bot meets the law. The simple fix is a clear label, such as "You are chatting with our AI assistant."

Product claims

AI copy can add claims you can't back up, such as "waterproof" or "made in the USA". You are responsible for every claim on your product page. Check each one against your supplier's specs.

What are the risks of AI in an online store?

  • Wrong answers to customers: An AI agent can state the wrong return window or promise a delivery date you can't meet. Feed it your real policies and test it with hard questions first.
  • Bland product pages: If every store uses AI with the same facts, the pages start to sound alike. Add your own photos, sizing notes and real customer questions.
  • Costs that grow with use: Many AI tools charge per message, resolution or credit. Set a monthly limit and check usage each week.
  • Data exposure: Free AI tools may use what you paste in. Keep customer data in business plans or in tools your store already trusts.

How should an online store start with AI?

  1. Pick one task: Choose the job that eats the most staff hours each week, such as order status questions or new product pages.
  2. Use what you already pay for: Check the AI inside your store platform, help desk and email tool before you buy anything new.
  3. Write your rules: List the policies and facts the AI must use, and the cases it must pass to a person.
  4. Check its work: Read every AI reply or product page for the first two weeks, and fix the rules where it goes wrong.
  5. Measure: Track reply time, tickets handled per person or pages published, before and after.

When does a custom AI tool make sense for a store?

Most stores should start with the AI in the tools above. A custom build pays off in a few cases.

  • Many systems: Orders, stock, support and wholesale sit in different tools, and the AI needs to see all of them to answer well.
  • Complex products: You sell items with many options, fit rules or parts, and shoppers need help choosing.
  • Your own data: You want an assistant that answers from your supplier specs, sizing data and past tickets.
  • Fees at scale: Per-resolution or per-message fees grow faster than your sales.

How does Blur Studio build AI for online stores?

I look at where staff time goes today, from support to listings to stock. If the AI in your current tools covers it, I will say so. If not, I build AI tools that connect to your store, help desk and stock data. Each one has clear rules and hands the hard cases to your team. Your store keeps full control of the code and every login. Once the tools are live, I watch them and update them when your catalog or policies change.

Questions people ask

How are ecommerce stores using AI?

Stores use AI to write product pages, answer order and return questions, suggest products, draft marketing emails and plan stock. A person still checks the facts and handles the hard cases.

Does Shopify have AI built in?

Yes, it does. Shopify includes Sidekick, its AI assistant for commerce, on every plan as of October 2026.

Can I use AI to write product reviews?

No, you can't. The FTC rule that took effect on October 21, 2024 bans fake reviews, including AI-written reviews from people who never used the product. You can use AI to sum up and reply to real reviews.

Do I have to tell customers they are chatting with AI?

In California, a business can be liable if its bot misleads people about being a bot to push a sale. A clear disclosure that the chat is a bot avoids that. A clear label on your chat window is the simple way to meet that rule.

What is the best first AI project for an online store?

Start with the task that takes the most staff time, which is often order status questions. An AI agent linked to your order data can answer those any time and pass the rest to your team.

Will an AI-written product description hurt my SEO?

It can, if it reads like every other AI-written description on the web. Treat AI drafts as a first pass that a person edits with real specifics about the product, not something you publish unedited at scale, which search engines and shoppers both tend to notice.

Roughly what does this cost?

As a broad reference, fixes and finishes start at around $1,500, and new builds start higher, always a fixed price agreed in writing before I start, never an hourly rate. My AI app cost guide explains what actually drives a quote up or down.

Is my business too small for this?

No. Most of the owners I work with have no tech team at all. If the smarter move is a cheap software subscription instead of custom software, I will tell you that on the first call, even though it means I do not get paid.
