AI for Australian tradies: what it does for a small trade business

By Ranjit Bhinge, founder of Blur Studio · Updated · 6 min read

Short answer: AI helps tradies answer calls they would miss, book jobs, write quotes and chase unpaid invoices. The easiest start is the AI already in job software such as ServiceM8 and Tradify, or an AI receptionist built for trades. Before you switch on call answering, tell callers the call is recorded, because most states and territories need everyone's consent. Follow the Spam Act for any marketing texts.

Ranjit Bhinge

You're an Australian tradie weighing up AI tools, and want real AUD pricing and the rules that actually apply to you.

I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.

What can AI do for a tradie business?

The best uses win jobs you would miss or save hours of typing each week.

  • Answering calls: An AI receptionist answers when you are on the tools. It asks what the job is, takes the address and books a time. Urgent jobs, such as a burst pipe or no power, go to your mobile.
  • Writing quotes: You talk through the job in your ute, and AI turns your notes into a neat quote. You check the price and send it.
  • Job notes: AI turns a voice note into a tidy job record, with materials used and time on site.
  • Supplier bills: AI reads supplier invoices and adds the costs to the right job.
  • Chasing payments: AI sends polite reminders when an invoice goes overdue.
  • Reviews: AI sends a review request after each finished job.

What does that look like on a real day?

Say a two-person electrical business gets 25 calls a week while both sparkies are on site. Without help, many of those callers ring the next name on Google. With an AI receptionist, each caller gets an answer and a booking. The owner reads a short summary of every call at lunch. The quote for Tuesday's switchboard job is drafted from a voice note before the owner gets home.

Which job software for tradies has AI built in?

If you already use job software, check its AI features first. Prices below come from each vendor's own Australian pricing page.

ServiceM8

ServiceM8 prices by jobs a month, and its prices include GST.

ServiceM8 plan Price a month Jobs a month
Free $0 30
Starter $29 50
Growing $79 150
Premium $149 500
Premium Plus $349 1,500 or more

Every plan includes ServiceM8's AI Smart Helpers. A Smart Report Helper builds reports from a typed request. ServiceM8 Phone starts at $29 a month. Its after-hours setting sends calls to an on-call team member or to voicemail.

Tradify

Tradify charges per user, month to month, and its prices exclude GST. Lite costs $48 a user a month, Pro costs $52 and Plus costs $62. Its AI tools, called SmartTools, are on the Plus plan. They include SmartRead for supplier bills and SmartWrite for text. Every plan syncs with Xero, MYOB and QuickBooks Online.

Fergus

Fergus is job software for trade businesses. It lists AI tools on its site, including Fergus AI and Fergus Assistant. Its pricing page shows a limited 90% off offer, which the page says runs until December. Check the full price after the offer ends before you sign up.

What AI receptionists are there for tradies?

An AI receptionist answers your phone, talks to the caller and books the job. Some are built for trades.

  • Sophiie: An AI receptionist for tradies. It answers calls, books jobs, sends quotes and invoices and follows up with customers. Its site lists connections with ServiceM8, Simpro, Xero and Google Calendar. It asks you to book a demo for pricing.
  • Waboom AI: An AI answering service that charges by the minute. Its pay-as-you-go option is 95c a minute, with a $500 starter pack and a $130 a month platform fee. Its Starter bundle is $910 of credit at 78c a minute. Waboom lists Google Calendar, Outlook, HubSpot and Pipedrive connections.

What rules apply when tradies use AI?

AI does not change the rules. It means more calls, messages and data pass through software, so the rules matter more.

Privacy Act

Most small businesses with a yearly turnover of $3 million or less sit outside the Privacy Act. Some small businesses must follow it anyway. These include health service providers, businesses that trade in personal information and contractors to the Commonwealth.

If the Act covers your business, a new rule starts on 10 December 2026. Your privacy policy must explain when a computer program makes or helps make decisions that significantly affect people. Even if you are exempt, treat customer details with care. Ask your AI vendor where your call recordings and customer data are stored.

Call recording

AI receptionists often record calls so they can write a summary, so check whether yours does. Queensland, Victoria and the Northern Territory let you record a call you are part of without the other person's consent. Most other states and territories need the consent of everyone on the call. So the safe choice across Australia is a short message at the start of each call. For example, "This call is answered by an AI assistant and recorded so we can book your job."

Marketing texts and emails

The Spam Act covers marketing texts and emails. You need the customer's consent, you must say who you are and you must include a working unsubscribe option. You must act on an unsubscribe request within five working days. A job reminder is fine, but a "10% off this month" text needs consent.

Government AI guidance

The National AI Centre published its Guidance for AI Adoption on 21 October 2025. It sets out six practices for using AI responsibly. The foundations version is written for businesses just starting out. The same page offers an AI policy guide and template you can adapt for a small team.

What are the risks of AI for tradies?

  • Wrong prices: AI can draft a quote with the wrong price or missing materials. Check every quote before it goes out.
  • Wrong promises: An AI receptionist might tell a caller you can come today when you cannot. Set clear rules on what it can promise.
  • Missed emergencies: Test how it handles urgent jobs, such as a gas smell or exposed wiring. These calls must reach a person fast.
  • Data in the wrong place: Customer addresses and recordings sit with the vendor. Ask how long they keep them and who can see them.

How should a tradie start with AI?

  1. Pick one job to fix: Missed calls or slow quotes are the usual first choice.
  2. Check your current software: Your job software may already have the AI feature you need.
  3. Set the rules: Write down what the AI can book, what it must pass to you and what it must never say.
  4. Add a recording message: Tell callers they are talking to AI and the call is recorded.
  5. Test it yourself: Ring your own number as a customer with an urgent job and a simple one.
  6. Review weekly: Read the call summaries for the first month and fix any wrong answers.

What should a tradie check before switching on AI?

  • Whether your state's call recording rules apply. Recording consent rules in Australia are set at the state level, not just federally, so check your own state's requirement rather than assuming a rule that applies in one state applies everywhere.
  • Whether the AI connects to the job software you already use. ServiceM8, Simpro and others each have their own AI features and their own third-party connections, so check compatibility before you pay for a separate AI receptionist that cannot see your actual jobs.
  • Whether pricing is in AUD with GST included. Several AI tools marketed to Australian tradies are priced by US vendors in USD, which changes the real monthly cost once GST and currency conversion are added.

When does a custom AI system make sense for a trade business?

Most small tradies should start with their job software and a ready-made AI receptionist. A custom system fits better in a few cases.

  • Your tools do not talk to each other: Calls, quotes, job software and accounts sit in separate places, and you copy details by hand.
  • Your quoting is complex: Prices depend on site photos, supplier price lists and your own margins.
  • You run several crews: Jobs must go to the right licensed person in the right area.
  • Per-user fees climb: A growing team pays a fee for every person, every month.

I builds custom AI tools for trade businesses and connects them to the job software and accounting tools they already use. Blur Studio works with many Australian businesses, and we do it all remotely. We start with one problem, such as missed calls or slow quotes, and build from there. You own the code and the accounts. My guide to field service management software covers how to weigh buying against building.

Questions people ask

What is the best AI tool for tradies?

Start with the AI in your job software, such as ServiceM8's Smart Helpers or Tradify's SmartTools. If missed calls are your main problem, add an AI receptionist built for trades. Test it on your own calls before you rely on it.

How much does an AI receptionist cost for a tradie in Australia?

Prices vary by provider. Waboom AI lists 95c a minute plus a $130 a month platform fee on pay as you go, as of October 2026. Some trade-focused tools, such as Sophiie, do not list prices on their site.

Do tradies need to tell callers an AI is answering?

Telling callers is the safe choice. Most Australian states and territories need everyone's consent to record a call, and AI receptionists usually record. A short message at the start of the call covers this.

Does the Privacy Act apply to small trade businesses?

Most businesses with turnover of $3 million or less a year are exempt. Some small businesses must still comply, such as health service providers and Commonwealth contractors. Check the OAIC's small business guidance to see where you sit.

Can AI write quotes for tradies?

AI can draft a quote from your notes, photos and price list in a few minutes. You still need to check the prices, materials and terms before you send it.

Do AI tools for tradies actually price in Australian dollars?

Check carefully. Tools built specifically for the Australian market, such as ServiceM8's own features, price in AUD with GST included. Tools built by US vendors often price in USD, which changes your real monthly cost once conversion is added.

Roughly what does this cost?

As a broad reference, fixes and finishes start at around $1,500, and new builds start higher, always a fixed price agreed in writing before I start, never an hourly rate. My AI app cost guide explains what actually drives a quote up or down.

Is my project too small for this?

No. Most of the owners I work with have no tech team at all, that is the whole point. If the smarter move is a cheap software subscription instead of custom software, I will tell you that on the first call, even though it means I do not get paid.
