Hiring app developers in Boston: what local pay and office jobs mean for your build
Short answer: Boston computer and math workers earned $65.47 an hour in May 2025 against $57.73 across the US, so expect a Boston quote to run high. Ask each team for a fixed price on a small first phase and for the monthly running cost. Put code and account ownership in writing.
You run a business in Boston and want to know what local pay and local office jobs mean for the app you are about to commission.
I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.
Boston pays more than the rest of the country for almost every kind of office work, and its office jobs lean toward money, law, research and health. That shapes what a Boston business should ask an app builder to make, and what it will cost to staff the work. The figures below come from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the federal agency that tracks wages.
What Boston pays, job group by job group
BLS published May 2025 wages for the Boston-Cambridge-Newton area on June 5, 2026. Average hourly pay across all jobs was $43.09, against $33.54 for the nation. Here is how some groups compare.
| Job group | Boston average per hour | US average per hour | Boston share of jobs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Management | $88.02 | $69.84 | 9.4% |
| Legal | $84.93 | $67.07 | 1.1% |
| Computer and math | $65.47 | $57.73 | 4.7% |
| Healthcare practitioners | $59.87 | $52.26 | 6.8% |
| Life, physical and social science | $56.22 | $45.48 | 2.5% |
| Business and financial operations | $54.89 | $45.78 | 9.0% |
| Office and administrative support | $28.64 | $24.79 | 9.8% |
These are wages, not agency rates, and they leave out self-employed people. They still tell you something useful. The last row is the biggest single job group in the area, and its pay is high enough that an hour saved on filing and data entry is worth real money. That is the case for a small app.
The office jobs that define Boston
One group, business and financial operations, had 242,960 jobs in the Boston area. Some of its detailed jobs are far more common here than nationally. BLS measures that with a location quotient: 2.00 would mean twice the national share.
| Job | Boston jobs | Location quotient |
|---|---|---|
| Accountants and auditors | 37,150 | 1.47 |
| Market research analysts and marketing specialists | 32,310 | 2.07 |
| Management analysts | 26,450 | 1.69 |
| Human resources specialists | 21,770 | 1.37 |
| Financial and investment analysts | 13,010 | 2.07 |
| Compliance officers | 10,920 | 1.51 |
| Fundraisers | 4,620 | 2.39 |
Fundraisers are employed at 2.39 times the national rate. That fits a city of hospitals, universities and museums that live on donations. It also means many small Boston firms and nonprofits sell to, or work for, institutions that ask for reports, forms and proof of care with data.
Three jobs an AI tool can take on in a Boston office
Intake and follow-up for a small accounting firm
With 37,150 accountants and auditors in the area, a small firm is competing for the same clients as many others. Its busiest weeks are spent chasing clients for documents. An AI tool can read each client email, sort the attached files into the right folder, list what is still missing and draft the reminder for a person to send. See AI for accountants.
Donor and grant reporting for a nonprofit
A development team often rebuilds the same report for each funder. A tool can pull figures from your own records and assemble a first draft in each funder's format, then a person edits it. Read AI for nonprofits before you start.
Matter and contract summaries for a boutique law practice
Legal jobs in the Boston area average $84.93 an hour, so lawyer time spent reading is costly. A search tool over your own files can show the clause and the page it came from, and a lawyer checks it. See AI for law firms and AI for financial advisors; BLS lists personal financial advisors at $84.99 an hour here.
Health care in the job mix
Healthcare practitioners hold 6.8 percent of Boston jobs against 6.3 percent nationally. Healthcare support workers hold 4.8 percent, earning $22.69 an hour. Support staff handle the phones, portal messages and scheduling that tie up clinicians. A message-sorting tool with a nurse approving each reply is the common safe shape. My guides to AI for clinics and a medical answering service cover the details. Patient data is also covered by the federal HIPAA privacy law, so ask a builder how records will be protected.
Trades, restaurants and schools: the labor cost behind the app
Not every Boston owner sits in an office. The same BLS release gives pay for the jobs that run a street-level business, and the gap with the national average is large.
| Job group | Boston average per hour | US average per hour | Boston share of jobs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Construction and extraction | $39.88 | $31.42 | 3.4% |
| Installation, maintenance and repair | $34.98 | $30.44 | 2.8% |
| Educational instruction and library | $41.04 | $32.47 | 6.7% |
| Sales and related | $32.10 | $26.43 | 7.9% |
| Food preparation and serving | $20.59 | $17.86 | 8.0% |
A contractor who pays $39.88 an hour for construction labor wants quotes, job photos and schedules to take minutes, not an evening. A restaurant group, where food service is 8.0 percent of area jobs, pays $20.59 an hour and cares about every minute of rota planning and supplier ordering. A school or tutoring business, in a metro where educational instruction is 6.7 percent of jobs, spends heavily on paperwork between lessons. In each case the app that wins is the one that removes a task a paid person does every day.
Insurance and money roles: a mixed picture
Boston is not strong in every finance job. Claims adjusters, examiners and investigators number 3,380, with a location quotient of 0.60, so they are under-represented. Insurance underwriters number 2,080 at 1.13, and personal financial advisors earn $84.99 an hour. Compliance officers number 10,920 and earn $53.29 an hour. If you run a small brokerage or advisory firm, ask whether your biggest time sink is claims paperwork, underwriting files or compliance records. Each needs a different tool. A compliance log that records who approved what, and when, is the sort of small build that pays back fast for a regulated firm.
HR and hiring in a high-wage city
Human resources specialists number 21,770 here at a location quotient of 1.37, and they earn $46.56 an hour. With wages this high, a bad hire or a slow onboarding costs more than in a cheaper city. A small app that collects new-hire forms, tracks who has signed what and reminds managers of missing steps can save HR hours. Remember that employee records fall under the state data rule in my Massachusetts guide, so plan access limits from the first day.
A metro that crosses a state line
BLS defines the Boston area as five Massachusetts counties (Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk, Plymouth and Suffolk) plus Rockingham and Strafford counties in New Hampshire. If your customers or staff live across that border, two sets of rules may apply to you. Massachusetts data law follows each resident; the state rules are in my Massachusetts guide, including the 201 CMR 17.00 duties and the Attorney General's 2024 AI advisory. New Hampshire is covered in its own guide.
Where Boston builders and founders gather
- The Open Accelerator: A Boston program backed by Red Hat and IBM for early AI startups. Its Cycle 2 applications closed on October 25, 2026, decisions come by December 18, and the cohort starts February 1, 2027 in Fort Point. A separate community membership is open to people who are not starting a company.
- MassRobotics: It calls itself the world's largest independent robotics hub. It started and is headquartered in Boston.
- CIC (Cambridge Innovation Center): Runs innovation campuses with flexible workspace, private offices, labs and event space.
- Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce: The business membership group that speaks for Boston's business community. It is a place to meet other local owners.
The Open Accelerator also lists events on its site, such as an AI healthcare hackathon in November 2026, which is a low-cost way to watch local builders work before you hire anyone. MassRobotics matters mostly if your product touches machines or devices. These are good places to meet people who have already built something. Ask them who delivered, and whether the owner kept the code.
Why a top ten list will not settle it
Lists of the best Boston app developers are often directories ranked by who submitted a profile. They rarely say who owns the code or what the monthly AI bill will be. Ask each candidate for a fixed price on a small first phase, for a live app you can try, and for the hosting and AI cost at your expected use. Compare cost in plain terms with what an AI app costs, or start smaller with an AI MVP. Remote and local both work. A Boston team is easy to meet in person, and a remote builder widens your pool. Wherever they sit, the US guide lists what to ask.
Working with me if you run a Boston firm
I quote a fixed price in writing and work directly with the owner. The code, domain, hosting and AI accounts are yours from the first day, so a Boston partner can take over if you ever want that. Fixes and finishes start around $1,500. If you are not building an app and only want to know where AI would pay off first, try the AI Strategy Sprint.
Questions people ask
How does a Boston wage compare with the rest of the US for computer jobs?
BLS reports $65.47 an hour for computer and math jobs in the Boston area in May 2025, against $57.73 nationally. These are wages, so an agency rate will be higher.
Which Boston job groups earn the most?
BLS lists management at $88.02 an hour and legal at $84.93, the two highest groups it names for the area. All jobs average $43.09.
Why do fundraisers matter for an app builder in Boston?
Fundraisers work at 2.39 times the national rate here, a sign of how many nonprofits and institutions run on donations. Their reporting is repeatable, which suits a small tool. See AI for nonprofits.
Does a Boston business also need to think about New Hampshire?
The BLS Boston area includes Rockingham and Strafford counties in New Hampshire. If you serve people there, read the New Hampshire guide too.
Is there an AI accelerator in Boston?
Check its site for the terms. Cycle 2 applications closed on October 25, 2026, and the cohort begins February 1, 2027.
Where do I find state data rules for a Boston app?
They are in my Massachusetts guide. Confirm specifics with the Office of Consumer Affairs or a lawyer.
Should I hire a Boston team or a remote one?
Either can work. Choose the one that shows working software every week or two and puts ownership of your code in writing. My guide to hiring AI developers has the questions.
