Assembly (formerly Copilot) client portal alternatives

By Ranjit Bhinge, founder of Blur Studio · Updated · 5 min read

Short answer: The main Assembly alternatives are SuiteDash for agencies that want a flat price with unlimited clients instead of a contact-tiered plan, Plutio for freelancers and small agencies that want invoicing and proposals built in from the start, ManyRequests for agencies running a client-facing work-request and proofing workflow, and a custom client portal for agencies whose reporting or project-management needs have outgrown what any of these templates handle well. Assembly (the platform formerly branded as Copilot) prices by active contacts rather than seats, starting free for 5 contacts and running to $49 a month for 50 contacts on Starter, so the real comparison usually comes down to your contact volume and whether you want flat or tiered pricing.

Assembly, the client portal you may still know as Copilot, isn't quite covering what your agency needs, and you want real alternatives with current prices before you commit to switching.

I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.

Why do agencies outgrow Assembly?

Assembly, rebranded from Copilot, is a client portal and app-builder platform that combines a CRM, a branded client-facing portal, a messaging inbox and billing in one workspace, aimed at firms that want to run client communication without stitching together separate tools. It works well for a lot of service businesses, and the reasons agencies look elsewhere tend to be specific.

  • Pricing scales with active contacts, not a flat fee: Free covers 5 active contacts, Starter is $49 a month for 50 contacts, and higher tiers scale up from there by contact volume, which can climb faster than expected for an agency with a large client list.
  • Internal users are capped by tier: Starter includes just 1 internal user, so a small team needs a higher tier purely to add staff seats, separate from the contact-count question entirely.
  • It's built around client communication, not deep project reporting: Assembly's strength is the client-facing portal and messaging layer. Agencies that need detailed project management or client reporting inside the same tool often find that piece thinner than a dedicated PM or reporting platform.

None of this makes Assembly a weak product. It's built to be a clean, branded front door for client communication, and for firms whose main need is exactly that, it does the job well. It's a question of whether your contact volume, team size and reporting needs still fit its structure.

What are the best Assembly alternatives?

Blur Studio (best value)

A ready-built, well-tested core with a different pricing model: no per-seat fees, and it covers almost all the features you'd actually need, usually working out to the best value for money. On top of that, Blur Studio builds owned customizations, meaning you can ask for it to be modified to your exact specifications, and you own those modifications outright. • Best for: Businesses that need software that works without barriers, no unnecessary fees and options to customize it to their needs.

SuiteDash

SuiteDash is an all-in-one business platform combining a CRM, client portal, project management, invoicing and scheduling, with unlimited clients and staff on every plan rather than pricing by contact count. Its START plan is $19 a month ($180 a year) with 100 GB of storage. THRIVE is $49 a month ($480 a year) with 500 GB. PINNACLE is $99 a month ($960 a year) with 2 TB. My SuiteDash alternatives and SuiteDash against GoHighLevel guide covers the other side of that choice.

  • Best for: Agencies with a large or growing client list that want a flat price unaffected by contact count, trading Assembly's narrower focus for a broader all-in-one tool.

Plutio

Plutio is an all-in-one business management tool covering projects, invoices, proposals, contracts, time tracking and client portals in one subscription. Core is $19 a month for up to 9 active clients with no added contributors. Pro is $49 a month for unlimited active clients and 30 contributors, with white-label and SSO available as add-ons. Max is $199 a month for unlimited contributors with white-label and SSO included.

  • Best for: Freelancers and small agencies that want invoicing, proposals and contracts bundled with the client portal itself, rather than handled in separate tools.

ManyRequests

ManyRequests is an agency management platform built around a branded client portal for submitting and tracking work requests, alongside time tracking, billing and reporting. Core is $59 a month ($39 a month billed annually) for 1 seat and 1 TB of storage. Pro is $99 a month ($79 annually) adding Slack integration, custom email notifications and the ability to remove ManyRequests branding. Enterprise starts at $1,000 a month with a branded mobile app and dedicated support. All plans include unlimited clients with no per-client fees.

  • Best for: Agencies running a request-and-delivery workflow, like design or content retainers, where clients submit requests and track status through the portal.

How do Assembly alternatives compare?

PlatformStarting pricePricing modelBest fit
AssemblyFree (5 contacts); $49/month (Starter, 50 contacts)Priced by active contacts and internal usersFirms wanting a clean, branded client communication layer
SuiteDash$19/monthFlat rate, unlimited clients and staffAgencies with a large client list wanting predictable cost
Plutio$19/monthTiered by active client and contributor countFreelancers and small agencies wanting billing built in
ManyRequests$59/month ($39 annual)Flat rate per seat, unlimited clientsAgencies running a work-request and delivery workflow

Assembly's exact tier structure beyond Starter changes the included contact count, internal-user limit and feature set together at each step, so it's worth confirming your exact contact and team size against Assembly's own pricing page before comparing, rather than relying on a single headline number.

When does a custom client portal make sense?

For most agencies, one of the platforms above covers the job. A custom portal makes more sense in specific cases. If you do build your own, this step-by-step client portal guide walks through the pieces.

  • You need deeper project reporting inside the same portal: If clients need to see real project and KPI data, not just messages and files, alongside their portal login, that often needs more than these tools offer natively. My guides to client portal software and agency client portal software go deeper on what that actually requires.
  • Your contact volume has outgrown tiered pricing: At a large enough client count, a flat-cost owned portal can work out cheaper over a few years than a subscription tied to contact count.
  • You want the portal tied directly into your own PM tool: Rather than running a separate client-facing layer, a custom build can connect your actual project management system to a branded client view, instead of duplicating data between two tools.

How does Blur Studio approach client portals?

I start by understanding what your clients actually need to see and do: messages, files, approvals, project status, invoices, or some mix, and how many clients you're running this for. If one of the platforms above genuinely fits, I'll tell you which one matches your contact volume and team size. If your reporting needs or client structure are specific enough to be worth owning, I build a portal connected to your actual tools, and you keep every account in your name.

Need something completely custom?

Everything above is a path to get it running quick and cheap. But sometimes the honest answer is that none of those quite fit, and what you actually need is something custom that you own, built uniquely for your business from the ground up, with AI thoughtfully designed into the parts of it that your processes actually benefit from. An asset that grows in value, not a generic, one-size-fits-all boilerplate that's an expense with a lock-in. This is a complete bespoke build, and it's something I do very well. Questions people ask

Is Assembly the same thing as Copilot?

Yes. Copilot rebranded as Assembly, so if you've seen it referred to either way, it's the same platform.

What's the cheapest Assembly alternative?

SuiteDash and Plutio both start at $19 a month, each with a different model: SuiteDash is flat-rate with unlimited clients from the start, while Plutio's entry tier caps at 9 active clients.

Does SuiteDash charge per client like Assembly does?

No. SuiteDash includes unlimited clients and staff on every plan, so the price only changes based on storage and feature tier, not contact count.

Is ManyRequests good for agencies that don't run a request-based workflow?

It can work, but ManyRequests is purpose-built around clients submitting and tracking work requests, so agencies with a different client interaction model may find a more general portal like SuiteDash or Plutio a better fit.

Can I move my client data out of Assembly if I switch?

Most portal platforms support exporting contacts and files, but the completeness of what transfers automatically varies. Confirm exactly what exports cleanly before committing to a new platform.

Roughly what does a custom client portal cost?

As a broad reference, fixes and finishes start at around $1,500, and new builds start higher, always a fixed price agreed in writing before I start, never an hourly rate. My AI app cost guide explains what actually drives a quote up or down.
