Connecteam alternatives: scheduling and team apps, side by side

By Ranjit Bhinge, founder of Blur Studio · Updated · 8 min read

Short answer: The main Connecteam alternatives are Homebase for small shops that want payroll and per-location pricing, When I Work for low-cost shift scheduling, Deputy for growing teams that want AI scheduling, Sling for a free plan up to 30 users, and Buddy Punch for GPS time clocks. As of October 2026, Connecteam charges per hub, from $29 a month billed yearly for the first 30 users. Most alternatives charge per user or per location instead.

Connecteam Alternative is one option among several, and you want a fair, current comparison before you commit to any of them.

I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.

Why do people look for a Connecteam alternative?

Connecteam sells its tools in three hubs. Operations covers the time clock, job scheduling, forms and tasks. Communications covers chat, company updates, surveys and a knowledge base. HR & Skills covers time off, courses, documents, hiring and onboarding. Each hub is priced on its own, and each price covers the first 30 users.

Connecteam plan (per hub) Billed yearly Billed monthly Each extra user, Operations hub
Small Business Free, up to 10 users Free Not needed
Basic $29 a month $35 a month $0.80 yearly, $1.00 monthly
Advanced $49 a month $59 a month $2.50 yearly, $3.00 monthly
Expert $99 a month $119 a month $4.20 yearly, $5.00 monthly
Enterprise Custom Custom Custom

The free Small Business plan includes every hub for up to 10 users. A second free option, the Limited plan, covers up to 30 users with only the basic tools in each hub. Connecteam also offers a 14-day trial of Expert with no card needed.

So the reasons people compare are usually about how the price grows.

  • Each hub is a separate bill: If you want scheduling, chat and HR, you pay for up to three hubs.
  • The full free plan stops at 10 users: Past that, you either drop to the basic Limited plan or pay for each hub you use.
  • Past 30 users, each person costs extra: On Operations Advanced, a team of 50 pays $49 plus 20 extra users at $2.50, which is $99 a month at the yearly price. Add the Communications hub on Advanced and the total reaches $178.
  • Some teams want payroll from the same vendor: Connecteam links to outside payroll tools from Operations Basic up, but its free plan does not. Homebase, Deputy and Buddy Punch sell their own payroll add-ons.

What does this look like for a real team?

Say you run a cleaning company with 40 staff who need schedules and a time clock. On Connecteam Operations Advanced, that costs $49 plus 10 extra users at $2.50, which is $74 a month at the yearly price. On Deputy Core, 40 users cost $260 a month. On Sling Premium, 40 users cost $68 a month at the yearly price. On Homebase Essentials, one location costs from $30 a month. So the right pick depends on your team size, how many locations you have and which tools you need.

As of October 2026, independently verified pricing: Connecteam's basic hub runs about $87 a month on annual billing or $105 month to month. Homebase ranges free to $120 a month, with free access for up to 10 employees at one location. When I Work starts at $2.50 a user a month, and Deputy runs $5 (Lite) to $9 (Pro) a user a month. Homebase also offers a native payroll add-on at $39 a month plus $6 per employee paid, which the others generally do not build in directly.

What is a good Homebase alternative?

Homebase charges by location, so it suits a few busy sites. A business with many small sites may pay less with a per-user app. When I Work and Sling cost from a few dollars a user. If you want payroll in the same place, look at Deputy. It sells payroll on its yearly Core and Pro plans in the US, for $8 a user a month plus a $49 base fee.

What is a good When I Work alternative?

When I Work focuses on schedules. If your team also needs chat, forms and training, Connecteam covers those in its hubs. If you want a free plan, Sling is free for up to 30 users. If you need proof of where staff clocked in, Buddy Punch records GPS on each punch.

What is a good Deputy alternative?

Deputy's monthly plans have a $30 minimum per invoice, so very small teams pay that minimum. Sling's free plan and Homebase's free plan both suit small teams. Larger teams that want more than scheduling often compare Connecteam, since one hub covers the first 30 users at a flat price.

What should you check before you switch?

  • Your local scheduling rules: Some cities and states have rules on schedule notice and pay for changes. Check that your app can track them. My guide to staff scheduling software covers these rules.
  • Your payroll link: Make sure hours flow into your payroll tool without retyping.
  • Your staff's phones: Ask a few staff to test the app for a week. If they will not use it, the price does not matter.
  • Your old records: Export past timesheets before you close your old account, since you may need them for pay questions later.

When does a custom team app make sense?

For most businesses, one of the apps above is the right buy. Try two with a small group of staff before you roll one out. A custom app makes sense in a few cases.

  • Your work has its own steps: For example, a home care agency needs visit notes, client sign-offs and care plans on the same screen as the schedule.
  • Your tools do not talk to each other: Schedules, job details, payroll and invoices may sit in separate apps that your office links by hand.
  • Per-user fees grow too high: A team of several hundred people pays for every seat, every month.
  • You want AI that knows your rules: For example, an AI that builds next week's schedule from your staff's skills, client needs and travel time.

A custom app can also sit next to the tools you keep. It can pull hours from your time clock and push them into payroll and invoices. My guide to internal tools shows what that can look like.

How does Blur Studio approach a team app build?

I start with how a shift works in your business today. I look at who sets the schedule, how staff hear about it, how hours reach payroll and where errors happen. Many teams only need one of the apps above, set up well, and I will say so. When your work has steps no app covers, I build a staff app around those steps. I connect it to your payroll, job and invoice tools, and I can add AI that drafts schedules or flags missed clock-ins. The code and the accounts belong to your business, and I can keep it running after launch.

Need something completely custom?

Everything above is a path to get it running quick and cheap. But sometimes none of these fit, and what you need is something custom that you own, built uniquely for your business from the ground up, with AI thoughtfully designed into the parts of it that your processes actually benefit from. An asset that grows in value, not a generic, one-size-fits-all boilerplate that's an expense with a lock-in. This is a complete bespoke build, and it's something I do very well. Questions people ask

Is Connecteam free?

Connecteam's Small Business plan is free for up to 10 users and includes all three hubs, as of October 2026. Its Limited plan is free for up to 30 users with basic tools only. Paid hubs start at $29 a month billed yearly for the first 30 users.

What is the cheapest Connecteam alternative?

Sling is free for up to 30 users, as of October 2026. Homebase is free for 1 location with up to 10 employees. Among paid plans, Sling Premium costs $1.70 a user a month billed yearly.

Is Homebase better than Connecteam?

Homebase suits small shops that want scheduling and payroll together, priced per location. Connecteam suits teams that want scheduling, chat, forms and training in one app, priced per hub. The better choice depends on what your team uses every day.

Which Connecteam alternative has GPS time tracking?

Buddy Punch records GPS on each clock-in on every plan, as of October 2026. Its Pro plan adds geofencing, and real-time GPS is a $2 a user add-on.

Can I move my staff data from Connecteam?

Export your staff list, past timesheets and any forms before you switch. Ask the new app whether it can import them, and keep your old account until your payroll checks out.

Why do some of these tools charge per hub or location and others per user?

Connecteam and Homebase price around a hub or a location, so a single site with many staff can cost less per person than a per-user tool. When I Work and Deputy price per user, which usually costs less for a small headcount but scales up as you add people. Work out your real headcount and site count before comparing sticker prices.

Which of these integrates best with payroll?

Homebase has a native payroll add-on built in, at $39 a month plus $6 per employee paid. The others generally rely on integrations or exported reports rather than running payroll themselves, so check your specific payroll provider's integration before you commit.

Roughly what does this cost?

As a broad reference, fixes and finishes start at around $1,500, and new builds start higher, always a fixed price agreed in writing before I start, never an hourly rate. My AI app cost guide explains what actually drives a quote up or down.

Is my project too small for this?

No. Most of the owners I work with have no tech team at all, that is the whole point. If the smarter move is a cheap software subscription instead of custom software, I will tell you that on the first call, even though it means I do not get paid.
