How much does custom software cost in 2026?

By Ranjit Bhinge, founder of Blur Studio · Updated · 5 min read

Short answer: Clutch's 2026 data shows most custom software projects cost $10,000 to $49,999, with an average of about $132,480 over about 13 months. US firms on Clutch charge $50 to $99 an hour on average. After launch, plan for hosting plus a yearly upkeep budget, which one firm puts at 15% to 25% of the build cost.

I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. How much does custom software development cost?

The best public data comes from Clutch, a site that collects verified client reviews of software firms. Its 2026 custom software pricing guide reports these figures.

Measure Clutch 2026 figure
Most common project size $10,000 to $49,999
Average project cost About $132,480
Average monthly cost About $10,209
Typical project length About 13 months

Clutch groups projects into four price bands. These are under $10,000, $10,000 to $49,999, $50,000 to $199,999, and $200,000 or more.

The average is much higher than the most common band. That happens because a few very large projects pull the average up. For a smaller first project, use the common band as your first guide.

What do custom software developers charge per hour?

Most quotes are hours times a rate. Clutch reports average hourly rates by country.

Where the firm is Average hourly rate on Clutch
United States $50 to $99
Canada $100 to $149
Australia $100 to $149
Poland and Spain $50 to $99
India, the Philippines, Ukraine and Mexico $25 to $49

A lower rate does not always mean a lower bill. A slower team, or one that needs more back and forth, can use far more hours. Judge the total price for a clear scope, and ask how many hours each part will take.

A simple worked example

Here is my own example math, using Clutch's US rate band. Say a project needs 600 hours of work. At $50 an hour it costs $30,000. At $99 an hour it costs $59,400. The hours matter as much as the rate, so ask each team to break its estimate into parts.

What makes custom software cost more?

A few choices move the price the most.

  • Number of user types: Software for staff only is simpler than software for staff, clients and admins, each with their own screens.
  • Links to other tools: Each connection to your accounting, payments, CRM or stock system adds work and testing.
  • Moving old data: Pulling years of records out of spreadsheets or an old system takes time. My guide to turning a spreadsheet into a web app covers this.
  • Phone apps: A web app runs on any device. Separate iPhone and Android apps add more work.
  • Rules you must follow: Health, finance and legal data need extra security, logs and reviews.
  • AI features: Tools that read documents or answer questions add data work, testing and a monthly usage bill. See my guide to AI app development cost.
  • Changes partway through: New ideas after the build starts are the most common reason projects run over.

Is it cheaper to hire an in-house developer?

Usually not for a first project. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics says the median pay for software developers was $135,980 in May 2025.

Pay is only part of the cost of staff. In June 2026, BLS data showed that wages made up 70% of employer costs for private industry workers. Benefits made up the other 30%. Here is my own math using those figures. If a developer earns $135,980 and pay is 70% of the total, the full cost is about $194,000 a year.

That buys one person. You may still need design, testing and someone to cover holidays. An in-house hire makes sense once you have steady work for a full year and someone who can manage a developer. My guide on how to hire AI developers compares the options.

What does custom software cost after launch?

The build is the first bill. Software also has running costs.

  • Hosting and database: Many small apps start on low monthly plans. As of October 2026, Supabase lists its Pro plan from $25 a month.
  • Upkeep: Software needs bug fixes, security updates and small changes. Aloa, a development firm, says to budget 15% to 25% of the first build cost each year for maintenance and improvement.
  • Other services: Email sending, text messages, maps and AI each have their own usage fees.

Here is how that upkeep range works on Clutch's average project. On a $132,480 build, 15% to 25% is about $19,900 to $33,100 a year.

How does custom software compare with paying for seats?

A fair comparison looks at several years, because product fees repeat every year. As of October 2026, HubSpot lists Sales Hub Professional at $90 to $100 per seat per month, plus a one-time $1,500 onboarding fee.

Here is my own math for a team of 20 sellers at $90 a seat. That is $21,600 a year, or $108,000 over five years, plus the onboarding fee. The vendor handles upkeep in that price, which has real value.

A custom tool can cost less over time when you pay for many seats across several tools. It costs more when a product already fits and you only need a few seats. My guide on build vs buy software walks through this choice.

How can a small business keep custom software costs down?

These steps lower the price without cutting quality.

  • Build one job first: Pick the task that costs you the most time each week.
  • Write down your process: A clear list of steps and rules saves hours of meetings.
  • Start with a web app: It works on phones and computers, so you build it once.
  • Keep products where they fit: Connect your custom tool to the accounting or email products you already use.
  • Clean your data before the build: Tidy records are faster to move.
  • Agree on the scope: Put changes on a list for the next phase.

How should you compare custom software quotes?

Ask every company to price the same written scope. Then check what each quote includes.

  • Fixed price or hourly: A fixed price for a clear first phase limits your risk. Hourly billing suits work that is still unclear.
  • What is included: Look for design, testing, launch and a short period of fixes after launch.
  • Running costs: Ask for the monthly hosting and service bill at your expected number of users.
  • Care after launch: Ask what upkeep costs and what it covers.
  • Ownership: Check that the code and every account will be in your name.

If one quote is far below the rest, ask what it leaves out.

How does Blur Studio think about cost?

When an owner asks me what a project will cost, I first ask what the software must achieve. Then I plan the smallest first version that gets that result, and give you an estimate for the build and the monthly running bill together. The hosting and service accounts are in your company's name, so you see every bill yourself. After launch, I take care of the software and help keep running costs under control. Questions people ask

How much does custom software cost?

Clutch's 2026 guide says most custom software projects cost $10,000 to $49,999. The average project on its site was about $132,480 and took about 13 months.

How much do custom software developers charge per hour?

Clutch reports that US firms charge $50 to $99 an hour on average. Firms in India, the Philippines, Ukraine and Mexico average $25 to $49 an hour.

How much does it cost to maintain custom software?

One development firm, Aloa, advises budgeting 15% to 25% of the first build cost each year for maintenance and improvement. Hosting is extra, and small apps often start on plans of about $25 a month.

Is custom software development affordable for a small business?

It can be, if you build one clear job first. Many projects on Clutch fall in the $10,000 to $49,999 band, which is within reach for many small firms.

Why do custom software quotes vary so much?

Teams charge different hourly rates, estimate different hours and include different things. Ask each one to price the same written scope and to list what is included.

Why do two companies quote such different prices for the same project?

Usually because they scoped different things. One may have priced the full feature list you described, and the other priced the smallest version that gets you live first. Ask each company to write down exactly what is included before you compare numbers.

Roughly what does this cost?

As a broad reference, fixes and finishes start at around $1,500, and new builds start higher, always a fixed price agreed in writing before I start, never an hourly rate. My AI app cost guide explains what actually drives a quote up or down.

Is my project too small for this?

No. Most of the owners I work with have no tech team at all, that is the whole point. If the smarter move is a cheap software subscription instead of custom software, I will tell you that on the first call, even though it means I do not get paid.
