Free AI video generators: what you really get (watermarks, limits and rights)

By Ranjit Bhinge, founder of Blur Studio · Updated · 10 min read

Short answer: Free AI video generators exist, but each one hides a catch: a tiny allowance that does not renew, a watermark, a resolution cap, or no right to use the clip for business. A file with no watermark and no commercial right is worse than a watermarked file you may replace after upgrading, so check rights first. Credits are the points a tool spends on each clip. As of 2 November 2026, Pika's free plan (Pika is an AI video app) has no watermark but 0 credits a month and no commercial license, Runway (an AI video and editing platform) gives 125 one-time credits, HeyGen and Synthesia free videos (both are avatar tools, where a digital presenter reads your script) are watermarked, and Higgsfield (a web platform that hosts many AI video and image models) has a free tier limited to a small set of models, with no credits and a visible watermark. Plans change often, so confirm on each vendor page.

Ranjit Bhinge

You want to try AI video without paying, and you want to know whether what you make can actually be used for your business.

I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.

Search for a free AI video generator and you will find lists that contradict each other. Some still say a tool has free credits when it no longer does. Some say "no watermark" and skip the part about whether you may use the clip commercially. I wrote this page as a dated snapshot: what the vendor pages said on 2 November 2026, with the source for each row.

The facts here come from vendor pricing pages, Higgsfield's help center and terms, and one independent comparison by Scrimba (published 15 August 2026, last verified by Scrimba on 28 September 2026; Scrimba also makes its own free explainer-video tool, Scrimba Explain, and says so in the article), and I label which is which. Anything I could not confirm is marked.

The honest answer: free exists, but each tier hides something

Free tiers are marketing. They let you try a tool. They are rarely designed to let you run a business on them. Expect one or more of: a small one-time allowance, a watermark, low resolution, a queue behind paying users, or terms that say personal use only. That is fine for learning. It is a problem if you post the clip as an ad and the terms did not allow it.

The four things that matter: allowance, watermark, resolution, rights

  1. Allowance, in real units. Credits mean nothing until you convert them to seconds or clips. And ask whether they renew or are a one-time gift.
  2. Watermark. A visible logo on the video. Usually removed on a paid plan.
  3. Resolution and length. Free often means lower resolution and short clips.
  4. Rights. Is commercial use granted, denied or silent? Silent is the dangerous case, because nothing warns you at export. If you cannot find the sentence, treat the output as personal use only.

Rank by rights first. The watermark is the least important filter.

Sources: Higgsfield help center, Runway, Pika, HeyGen, Synthesia, Creatify, Luma, and Scrimba's independent comparison. Some older roundups still say Pika's free plan includes monthly credits and commercial use. Pika's own page says otherwise today. One more caution on Pika: its pricing page lists a commercial license from Starter, while Scrimba's 28 September check put it at Creator, so confirm before you rely on Starter.

A note on Sora, since many lists still include it: OpenAI's help page says Sora ended on 26 April 2026 (web and app) and 24 September 2026 (API), and Sora is not in Higgsfield's current tool list. Do not follow a list that sends you there.

Translate credits into seconds

  • Runway Free: 125 credits. Scrimba puts Gen-4.5 at 12 credits a second, so that is roughly 10 seconds of video in total, once, ever.
  • Pika Starter: 900 credits. Pika's own calculator shows a 5 second Seedance 2.5 clip (Seedance is a ByteDance video model) at 720p costing 122 credits, so about 7 clips with zero retries.
  • Creatify Free: 10 credits, which it says covers up to 2 video ads or 20 image ads per month.
  • Higgsfield Free: no credits per its help center. Paid plans use credits: for example Plus is $59 a month for 1,200 credits, and the pricing page lists Kling 3.0 at 720p at about 7 credits per 5 second clip. Check the current page.

Once you see "about 10 seconds, one time", you know what free is for: a taste, not a workflow.

No-watermark help that is not a generator

If your goal is a clean file, a free editor may serve you better than a free generator. Microsoft's Clipchamp is a free browser video editor: its pricing page (read 2 November 2026) says you sign in with a personal Microsoft account, with no payment or download, and that 4K export, premium stock and the brand kit tool come with Microsoft 365 Personal or Family. I did not check its export terms, so confirm the watermark and rights position on the live page.

On the generator side, PixVerse is an AI video app that roundups call the best daily-renewing free tier. I could not read its free-plan terms. Its pricing page lists a paid Standard plan at $8 a month billed yearly ($10 monthly) as watermark-free and ad-free, up to 720p, with 1,200 credits every 30 days plus 60 daily credits. That tells you what the free tier is missing, and the price of removing it.

A five-step watermark and rights check

  1. Make one real test clip and export it. Look at every corner and the last second, because some tools add an end card.
  2. Find the sentence in the terms that covers your exact plan and your use (ads, client work, resale).
  3. Save a dated copy of that page or a screenshot.
  4. If the pricing page and the terms disagree, as they do for Higgsfield's Free plan, ask support in writing and keep the reply.
  5. Only then plan a campaign around the file.

The trap to remember: a clean file you may not use commercially is worse than a watermarked file you can at least show internally.

Free does not mean you may use it for business

This is information, not legal advice. Check local law and each platform's current rules.

A viral free-tier clip can become a problem if you boost it as an ad and the terms said personal use only. Keep a dated copy of the terms page you relied on. Never use a real person's face or voice (a customer, a celebrity, a competitor) without written permission. And disclose AI where a platform or law requires it, without removing any provenance marks that a tool embeds.

Where Higgsfield's free tier fits

From Higgsfield's own help center and terms: a free tier exists, limited to a small set of models, with no credits included (the pricing table shows 0 credits, against 270 on Starter). There is no trial period. Every generation on a free account carries a visible Higgsfield watermark, and the watermark cannot be removed separately; files made earlier are not re-cleaned when you upgrade. Paid plans do not add the visible watermark. Higgsfield may still embed invisible provenance markers on all plans. Its pricing page also lists small free-generation pools, but only on paid-plan cards, and some promotional unlimited and free-generation offers were listed with a 3 November end date, so I would not plan around any of them. On rights, Higgsfield's pricing table marks commercial use as not included on the Free plan, while its Terms say it does not restrict commercial use of outputs. Free outputs also carry a watermark. Check with Higgsfield support before using free outputs commercially, or use a paid plan.

So for a business, the Higgsfield free tier is a way to look around, not to make usable assets. If you want the full picture, see Higgsfield free vs paid, Higgsfield pricing and my review. And Higgsfield's refund rule is short: 7 days from first purchase, only if no credits were used, with a service fee of up to 6 percent, and renewals are not refundable. So do not pay "just to test" unless you accept that.

When free is enough

  • You are learning what prompts and image-to-video can do.
  • The clip is for internal use, such as a mood board or a pitch draft.
  • You only need one or two throwaway clips, and a watermark does not matter.
  • You are comparing tools and need only a feel for the interface and speed.

A 7-day free test with pass or fail

  1. Day 1: Pick one clip you really need (5 to 10 seconds). Write the prompt and prepare a photo.
  2. Days 2 to 4: Run it on three free tiers. For each, record tries, minutes spent, watermark, resolution and the exact sentence on commercial use.
  3. Days 5 to 6: Compare and pick the best.
  4. Day 7: Decide.

Pass: you got a usable clip from a tool whose terms grant commercial use on the plan you hold. Fail: anything else. Then decide whether to pay for a small plan (Pika Starter at $10 a month includes a commercial license per its page) or change the job.

Signs it is time to pay

  • You hit the cap twice in one week.
  • You need clean 1080p.
  • A client or an ad account is involved.
  • You need more than two tries per clip.
  • You want a brand character that repeats.

If none apply, stay free, or use your phone. When you do pay, read how to spend Higgsfield credits wisely if you pick it, and see the wider picks in best AI video generators for small business.

Safety checks for free sites

"Free, no signup, no watermark" sites that appear in search can harvest what you upload. Never upload client footage, faces or documents to a site without a clear company name, terms page and privacy page. Check that the site is the vendor's real domain. Higgsfield, for example, says in its help center that it has no official mobile or desktop app and that any app using its name is a copy. Details in is Higgsfield safe and legit. Also beware of free plans that need a card and charge automatically after a trial, free plans that block downloads, and credits that expire fast. Scrimba reports Hailuo (an AI video model from MiniMax) welcome credits expire after three days. That is not confirmed on Hailuo's own page.

Who should skip generators and use a phone

  • You need real people, real staff or a real place. A phone beats any generator.
  • You need video this week for a client. Free tiers are slow, small and uncertain.
  • You do not have time to read terms. An unread license is a risk.

How I'd approach this

I would treat free as a three-tool taste test, write down the commercial-use sentence for each, and only pay once one tool passes the test and I can name the job it does. If I wanted several models under one bill, I would look at Higgsfield's paid plans after reading the refund and cancel rules, not before. If your business will use AI video every week, the missing piece is usually the process: who prompts, who checks rights, who approves, where finished files live. Blur Studio builds that approval portal or shared asset library around these tools. Tell me what you make and I will say what I would set up.

Questions people ask

Is there a free AI video generator with no watermark?

Pika's pricing page lists its Free plan as no watermark, but with 0 credits a month and no commercial license, so it is of limited use. Higgsfield's free accounts add a visible watermark that cannot be removed separately. Most other free plans watermark their output. A file with no watermark and no commercial right is worse than a watermarked one, so check rights first.

Can I use free AI video for my business?

Sometimes, but check the sentence in the terms for that exact plan. Pika's free plan lists no commercial license, and Scrimba reports HeyGen's free output is limited to personal and internal evaluation use. If you cannot find a sentence granting commercial use, treat the clip as personal use only. This is not legal advice. Check local law and current rules.

How many videos can I make for free?

Very few. As read on 2 November 2026, Runway gives 125 one-time credits (roughly 10 seconds per Scrimba's conversion), HeyGen gives 3 watermarked videos a month, and Creatify gives 10 credits a month. Pika's free plan has 0 monthly credits, and Higgsfield's free tier includes no credits.

Why do free tools add watermarks?

Because the free tier is advertising. The watermark markets the tool and pushes you to upgrade. On Higgsfield, the visible watermark appears on every free-account generation and is not removable separately, and paid plans do not add it.

Can I remove a watermark myself?

I would not. Removing it may break the tool's terms, and Higgsfield's help center says the watermark is not removable separately and earlier files are not re-cleaned after you upgrade. Re-generate on a paid plan instead, if the terms allow your use.

What is the cheapest paid plan with commercial rights?

Among the tools I read, Pika Starter at $10 a month lists a commercial license. Luma Plus is $30 a month and lists commercial use. Higgsfield's pricing table marks commercial use as included from Starter, which is $19 a month with 270 credits (Plus is $59 a month for 1,200 credits), as of November 2026, though note Seedance 2.0 is not on Starter. Check each current page, since prices change.

Are free AI video sites safe?

Not automatically. Avoid sites with no clear company, terms or privacy page, and never upload client footage, faces or documents to them. Stay on the vendor's real domain. See is Higgsfield safe and legit for the checks I use.

Does Higgsfield have a free plan?

Yes, a free tier exists, limited to a small set of models and with no credits included, and there is no trial period, per its help center. Free-account outputs carry a visible watermark, and the pricing table marks commercial use as not included on Free. Check the current pricing page and Higgsfield free vs paid.
