Higgsfield MCP, CLI and the Claude connector: a plain guide to what they are and how to set them up

By Ranjit Bhinge, founder of Blur Studio · Updated · 11 min read

Short answer: Higgsfield MCP is a connector that lets an AI assistant such as Claude make Higgsfield images, video and audio for you from a chat, using your own Higgsfield account. Higgsfield is an AI image and video platform. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, a standard way for an assistant to use another service's tools. You need an active paid Higgsfield plan, no API key is needed, and every generation through the connector costs credits (Higgsfield's unit of spend), even models that are unlimited on the website. There is no built-in spending cap, so you set one in your first message.

You want to ask Claude for a product video in plain English and have it appear in your Higgsfield account, and you want to know how to set that up without a surprise credit bill.

I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.

If you already use Higgsfield, the AI image and video platform, there is a second way to use it: from inside a chat with an AI assistant. This page explains the three ways to connect (MCP, the command line and the API, which is a way for one program to ask another for work), the exact steps for Claude, ChatGPT (OpenAI's AI assistant) and Cursor (an AI code editor), how credits behave, and a short test to run before you trust it with real work. The steps and rules come from Higgsfield's help center (articles dated 1 August 2026, read on 2 November 2026) and its own command line guide (19 October 2026), and I flag where an independent guide disagrees.

What Higgsfield MCP is, in plain words

An AI assistant like Claude can chat and write, but it cannot make a Higgsfield video on its own. MCP is a standard that lets it call outside tools. Think of it as a plug between the assistant and Higgsfield. Once plugged in, you can type "make three still images of my product on a kitchen counter" and Claude calls Higgsfield for you. The files land in your Higgsfield Assets, tagged as coming from MCP, usually within about a minute of the job finishing, per the help center.

Higgsfield's official server address is https://mcp.higgsfield.ai/mcp. Use only that exact address, and treat any other server address or seller with suspicion. Higgsfield's help center lists its official addresses and says it has no lifetime plans and no resellers. Sign-in uses your normal Higgsfield login. No API key is needed.

Things people ask it to do: make images and video, upscale (make larger and sharper), remove backgrounds, reframe (change a video's shape for another platform), use saved characters, make audio, run Marketing Studio (Higgsfield's ad tool, where you can paste a product link and get video ads built on a set of presets), and check the credit balance. If you are not a developer, start with MCP. If you want to build Higgsfield into your own customer-facing app, ask about the API, which Higgsfield sells separately at open.higgsfield.ai. Steps for Claude are in generating video inside Claude, and costs for building your own tool are in API options and costs.

Before you start: what you need and what it costs

  • An active paid Higgsfield plan. The help center says one is required. A third-party guide (Layer3 Labs, September 2026) says the connector page advertises a free 100-credit trial. I could not find that on higgsfield.ai/mcp on 2 November 2026, and Higgsfield's help center says there is no trial period. Check higgsfield.ai/mcp the day you sign up and do not count on a trial.
  • The credit rule. Everything made through MCP, the CLI, Canvas or Supercomputer deducts credits at normal rates. Higgsfield says Unlimited model access and free generation pools work only on higgsfield.ai. A model that is unlimited on the website still costs credits in Claude. Failed generations usually refund automatically, but some models may not. See Higgsfield pricing and check the pricing page for your plan's monthly credits.
  • The terms. MCP falls under the Developer Terms in Higgsfield's Terms of Use. You are responsible for what an agent generates through your account. Claude and ChatGPT have their own terms too.

Connect Higgsfield to Claude, step by step

  1. Open Claude and go to Settings, then Connectors.
  2. Choose Add custom connector.
  3. Name it Higgsfield.
  4. Paste https://mcp.higgsfield.ai/mcp as the address.
  5. Click Connect, then sign in to Higgsfield and approve access.
  6. Start a new chat, turn the connector on for that chat if needed, and mention Higgsfield in your first message.

When you want to use your own images, do not drag them into the chat. Higgsfield's help center says the agent will open an upload window, or you can give it a web address to import.

Connect it to ChatGPT, Cursor or Claude Code

  • ChatGPT: use the official Higgsfield plugin from the Plugins Directory. Two limits per the help center: no audio generation, and the Website Building skill is not available there.
  • Cursor (a code editor with AI built in): add Higgsfield from Cursor's marketplace.
  • Claude Code, OpenClaw and Hermes (AI coding agents that run in a terminal, the text window where you type commands): these use the Higgsfield CLI. Higgsfield's help center gives three commands: install with npm i -g @higgsfield/cli (npm is a tool for installing programs), sign in with higgsfield auth login, then add the skills with npx skills add higgsfield-ai/skills. If a command is new to you, paste it into your assistant and ask it to explain before you run it.

Higgsfield's CLI guide (published 19 October 2026, commands checked on 16 October with version 1.1.26) also shows other install routes, a generate cost command that shows a price without creating a job, and a note that the wait option times out after 10 minutes while the job keeps running on the server.

Your first safe test: a 30 minute pass or fail check

Do this before any client work. Stop if any step fails.

  1. Balance check. Ask: "Check my Higgsfield credit balance." Pass if the number matches the website under Manage Account, Usage.
  2. Quote check. Ask: "How many credits will one product image cost? Do not generate yet." Pass if a quote appears before any spending.
  3. One image. Approve a single image. Pass if it appears in your Assets tagged MCP within about a minute.
  4. Reconnect. Disconnect the connector, reconnect it, and repeat step 1. Pass if it works without help.

Only after all four pass should you try a short video. Judge a video on a cheap setting first. In Higgsfield's own CLI test on one account, a 5 second 1080p clip with Seedance 2.5 (ByteDance's video model) was priced at 80 credits, and the same clip in draft mode (a cheaper preview setting) at 15. That is a vendor example from 16 October 2026, not a price list. The cost on the Generate button, or the quote the assistant gives you, is the number to trust.

How to keep spending under control

Higgsfield says there is no native credit cap for agent sessions. You control spending with an instruction in the chat, and the help center is clear that this is a request to the assistant, not a hard limit. Here is what I would paste as the first message of every session:

Before generating anything, tell me the credit cost and wait for my confirmation. Quote the total for the whole batch. Stop and ask me again if we pass 300 credits in this chat. Use the draft or cheapest setting unless I say final.

More ways to stay in control:

  • Do not set the connector's tools to "always allow". It skips the approval prompt. On a business account I would keep the approval prompt on for generate tools until the workflow is proven.
  • Explore on the website, repeat through MCP. On higgsfield.ai your plan's Unlimited models and free generations can apply. In Claude they cannot. Use MCP once a prompt is proven and you want batches.
  • Name the model for client work. Higgsfield's help center says the assistant picks a model for you if you do not name one. For shots that matter, I would name the model and let the assistant choose only for drafts.
  • Check Usage weekly. Manage Account, then Usage, shows spend and credit returns. See how to spend Higgsfield credits wisely and tips that save credits.
  • Use a business workspace, not a personal login. Team and Scale plans have pooled credits, and Scale has per-member spend controls. Admins can see members' content, so tell your team.

Five requests to paste once it works

Vague requests waste credits. These are fill-in starters, written by me and not tested. Put the spending rule from the section above at the top of the chat first.

  1. Balance and prices: "Show my Higgsfield credit balance and the credit cost of one still image and one 5 second video on the cheapest setting. Do not generate."
  2. Stills first: "Make 3 still images of [product] on [surface], 4:5, from the attached photo. No text. Quote the total first."
  3. Animate the winner: "Animate image 2 for 5 seconds with one slow push in, on the draft setting. Quote first."
  4. Size variants: "Reframe the approved image for 9:16 and 1:1. Quote first."
  5. Audit: "List what you generated in this chat and the credits each item used, then I will compare with Manage Account, Usage."

The fifth request matters because an agent's own tally can be wrong. In Higgsfield's website build log the agent reported 380 credits when the real figure was 1,479.32.

When other guides disagree with Higgsfield

Many MCP guides were written in the first weeks after launch, and some are out of date. Here is what I saw on 2 November 2026 and how I would treat it.

  • An API key and an npm package. A May 2026 guide from MindStudio tells readers to install a package and paste a Higgsfield API key into a config file. Higgsfield's help center says the connector uses sign-in approval and needs no API key, and that the API is a separate product. Follow Higgsfield's version.
  • A one-line Claude Code command and config files for other editors. Techsy (May 2026) gives a claude mcp add command and JSON snippets for Cursor, Windsurf and others. Those are not on Higgsfield's help page, which points Claude Code users to its CLI and Cursor users to its marketplace. If you try a snippet, use only the official address above, and know it is a workaround.
  • "Always Allow". Miracamp suggests setting the permissions to Always Allow so Claude does not ask each time. That removes your only spending pause. Keep the approval prompt on for generate tools.
  • A free monthly allowance. Techsy says the connector has a free tier of 150 credits a month. Higgsfield's help center says an active paid plan is required. Trust the help center and the pricing page.
  • Which agents work. Higgsfield says any agent that supports MCP can use the same server address, and that ChatGPT uses the official plugin instead.

What goes wrong and how to fix it

  • Authorization failed. Disconnect the connector, reconnect it, and sign in again.
  • The assistant does not call Higgsfield. Start a new chat, name Higgsfield in your first message, and check that the connector is switched on for that conversation.
  • A web "unlimited" model charged credits. That is expected through MCP and the CLI.
  • A job times out. With the CLI, the job continues on the server. Use generate get with the job number to check it.
  • The result was blocked. Higgsfield and its model providers can block copyrighted characters, brands, public figures and ambiguous content. See whether Higgsfield is safe and legit for how moderation and data rules work.
  • A second install confuses the CLI. Higgsfield's guide mentions stale duplicate installs. Remove the old one.

Limits you should know

  • There is no spending cap built in.
  • Unlimited and free generations do not apply to MCP, the CLI, Canvas or Supercomputer.
  • ChatGPT has no audio and no website building.
  • You are responsible for what the agent makes, including consent for any real person's face or voice.
  • Higgsfield can change or remove models at any time under its terms, so a workflow built on one model can break.
  • Third-party guides go stale fast. The Layer3 Labs guide says Higgsfield publishes no CLI documentation, which Higgsfield's own 19 October 2026 guide contradicts.

Who should skip it

  • Someone who makes dozens of exploratory videos a day. Credits will drain faster than on the website, where your plan's Unlimited models may apply.
  • Developers building a product. Use the API, which has its own key and prepaid balance.
  • Anyone who only needs one model and never wants a chat in the middle. Using that model's own app can be simpler.
  • Anyone who has not read the refund rules. Higgsfield's help center says refunds are limited to 7 days with no credits used, and renewals are not refundable. See free versus paid first.

How I'd approach this

I would treat MCP as a way to repeat something that already works, not to explore. Find the prompt on the website, get it to a result you would show a client, then move it into Claude with the spending rule at the top. Save the winning prompt in a shared document so the next person does not start from zero.

If you are a small team and want one place where staff pick a brief, get three variants, and have a manager approve before anything is spent, that is a workflow, not a connector. Blur Studio builds those custom workflows around AI tools, with approvals, a shared asset library and spend limits that are real, not just a polite instruction. If that sounds useful, see how I work with business owners. If you are still deciding on the tool itself, start with a Higgsfield plan and run the 30 minute test above before anything else.

Questions people ask

Does Higgsfield MCP cost extra?

Higgsfield's help center says it uses your plan credits and needs an active paid plan. There is no separate MCP fee that I found. The API is different: it has its own prepaid dollar balance. Check the pricing guide and higgsfield.ai/pricing.

Do I need to code to use the CLI?

You only need to paste a few commands into a terminal window, such as the install and sign-in commands in this guide. If that feels unfamiliar, use the Claude connector instead, which needs no commands at all.

Why are my web Unlimited models charging credits in Claude?

Higgsfield says Unlimited model access and free generations apply only on higgsfield.ai. Through MCP, the CLI, Canvas and Supercomputer, every generation costs credits at standard rates.

Can I set a spending limit for Claude?

Not a hard one. Higgsfield says there is no native credit cap for agent sessions, and a limit in your prompt is an instruction, not a block. Put a confirm-first rule and a stop number in your first message, and check Manage Account, Usage.

Which is better for a small business, MCP or the website?

Use the website to explore, because your plan's Unlimited and free generations can apply there. Use MCP once a prompt is proven and you want repeats or batches. See how to use Higgsfield.

Do I need an API key or to install anything?

Not for the Claude connector. Higgsfield's help center says you connect with sign-in approval and no API key. Some older guides say to install a package and paste a key, which belongs to the separate API product. Only the command line route needs an install.

Can several people use one Higgsfield connection?

A connection uses one person's account. Higgsfield's fair-use rules prohibit sharing credentials. For a team, look at Team or Scale plans with pooled credits, and check the help center for how seats and spend controls work.

Is it safe to connect Higgsfield to Claude?

You sign in with your own Higgsfield login and approve access, and no API key is shared. The main risks are spending credits without a pause and being responsible for what the agent makes. Read the Developer Terms, and see is Higgsfield safe and legit.
