How do I change hundreds of prices in Shopify at once?
Short answer: You have four ways to change many Shopify prices at once: the built-in bulk editor (a spreadsheet-style table in your admin), a CSV file export and import, a bulk-edit app from the Shopify App Store, or the Admin API (the programming interface for your store). Use the bulk editor for a few dozen products, a CSV for hundreds, and the API when prices come from a supplier sheet that changes every week. Shopify is an online store platform. Apps and API access have their own terms, so check them before you commit.
You need to change a few hundred prices in Shopify without clicking into each product, and you want the safest way to do it.

Which method fits you
| Method | Best for | Skill needed | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bulk editor | Up to a few dozen products, hand-picked | None | Typing mistakes, slow on big edits |
| CSV file | Hundreds of products, one-off or monthly | Spreadsheet basics | Blank columns overwrite data |
| App | Rule-based changes, such as plus 10 percent on a collection | Low | Another subscription |
| API or script | Prices driven by a supplier sheet or an outside system | A developer | Rate limits, upkeep |
Way 1: the bulk editor
This is the table inside your Shopify admin. Steps, from Shopify's help pages:
- In your admin, go to Products.
- Tick the products you want to change.
- Click Bulk edit.
- Click Columns and add the fields you need, such as Price, Compare-at price, SKU and Cost per item.
- Click a price cell and type the new value. To copy one value down many rows, drag the fill handle (the small square at the cell corner). You can also drag across several cells and type once.
- Click Save. If an error appears, fix it and save again.
Things to know. Shopify says the more you change at once, the longer it takes. It also warns that Microsoft Edge can fail because of a limit on web address length, and suggests Chrome, Firefox or Safari. If you get the message "Update the invalid values, then save again", a variant is often missing a SKU, or a metafield (a custom field on a product) has a validation error, even in a column you cannot see. Add the SKU and metafield columns to find it.
Way 2: a CSV file
A CSV is a plain text table you can open in Google Sheets or Excel. This is my default for hundreds of products.
- Export your products first. Do not build the file from scratch.
- Open it in a spreadsheet. Change only the Price column (and Compare-at price if needed).
- Keep the URL handle, Title, Option1 name and Option1 value columns exactly as exported. Shopify warns that if you include a SKU column but drop the option columns, the variants can be deleted. Changing option values also creates new variant IDs, which can break other tools that depend on them.
- Save as CSV in UTF-8. Shopify warns that sorting the file in a spreadsheet editor can detach products from their image links, so keep the exported order.
- In Products, click Import, add the file, and tick Overwrite products with matching handles. Without it, products that already exist are ignored.
- Click Upload and continue, review, then Import products. You get a confirmation email when it finishes.
The limits that bite: the file cannot exceed 15 MB, an import cannot be cancelled once started, and there is no history of past imports (check the store activity log). A blank cell in a column you included overwrites the live value as blank, so delete columns you are not changing, apart from the required ones. If you use more than one stock location, use the separate inventory CSV for quantities, not the product file.
Way 3: a bulk-edit app
The Shopify App Store has apps that change prices by rule, for example raise every item in one collection by 8 percent, round to .99 or schedule a sale to start and end. Plans and prices change, so check the listing's reviews, the pricing and whether it can undo a change. Test on three products first. An app is the right pick when the rule is simple and repeated.
Way 4: the Admin API
The Admin API lets a script read and change prices directly. Shopify's limits matter here. Its APIs use a leaky bucket, where each request adds to a bucket that drains slowly, and a full bucket returns a throttle error. Shopify recommends a one second back-off before retrying. An input list is capped at 250 items per request, so 2,000 variants means at least 8 requests. Use this route when price changes must happen without anyone touching a file.
Driving prices from supplier sheets
Many sellers get a supplier price list every week and re-key it by hand. The fix is to turn the sheet into a rule:
- Match supplier rows to your SKUs (one lookup column).
- Apply your margin rule in the sheet, such as cost times 1.6, rounded up to .99.
- Check the changes: list every row where the new price moved more than 25 percent and look at those before anything goes live.
- Push the approved prices through a CSV or the API.
A made-up example: a supplier sends 600 rows. Your margin rule changes 540 of them by under 5 percent, and 12 by over 25 percent. You review only the 12, which takes ten minutes, instead of checking 600. That checking step is the part most sellers skip, and it is where bad prices come from. If you also sell elsewhere, remember your marketplace listings need the same change. My Airtable and Shopify guide shows a database version of this flow, and the spreadsheet to web app guide shows how to make the whole flow a small tool.
Why bulk price updates fail or do not stick
- Bundles do not follow. Per Shopify's help pages, when a bundled product's price changes, the bundle's price does not update, and you must change it by hand. Bundles also do not support import, export or bulk editing. See my bundle inventory guide.
- A price changed in your store may not reach marketplaces until the sync app runs. Check your marketplace app's price rules.
- Prices for other countries. If you use Markets (Shopify's tool for selling in several countries), your export has extra columns such as Price / International. Edit those too, or those buyers keep the old price.
- Currency symbols. Shopify says to enter only the number, for example 9.99.
How I'd approach this
For a one-off change, I use a CSV and test with five products first. For a weekly change, I stop treating it as a file job and make it a small process: sheet in, rule applied, exceptions flagged, prices pushed. If you do the same price edit every week, that is a sign it should be automated. Business process automation is the general name for this, and a small custom tool can run the whole loop for far less than the hours you lose to it. Whichever way you go, export a backup of your products before the first import.
Questions people ask
How do I bulk update prices in Shopify without an app?
Use the built-in bulk editor for a few dozen products or a CSV export and import for hundreds. Both are in your Shopify admin and need no extra subscription.
Why is my Shopify bulk price update not working?
Common causes: a variant with no SKU or a metafield error (the "Update the invalid values" message), using Microsoft Edge, a CSV missing the overwrite tick, or dropping the option columns from the file. Try Chrome and fix the SKU and metafield columns first.
How many products can I update in one CSV?
Shopify limits a product CSV to 15 MB. If the upload fails or times out, split the file into smaller ones and upload each.
Can I bulk update prices automatically from a supplier sheet?
Yes, with a script on the Admin API or a small tool that applies your margin rule and flags large changes. See business process automation for the idea.
Do bundle prices change when I change the product prices?
No. Shopify's help pages say the bundle price does not update when a bundled product's price changes, so update the bundle by hand. More in my bundle inventory guide.
