How do I sell bundles in Shopify without breaking my stock counts?
Short answer: Install Shopify Bundles, Shopify's free bundles app, to make fixed bundles and multipacks. Shopify then works out bundle stock from the parts: the part you have the least of decides how many bundles you can sell. That stays right inside your own store. It can break when the same parts are also listed on Amazon, eBay or Etsy, because Shopify's list of places that sell bundles covers the Online Store, Shop, Shopify POS and (for fixed bundles) Google & YouTube, not those marketplaces.
You want to sell two or more products together as one offer in Shopify and keep the stock numbers right on every channel.

What a bundle is in Shopify
Shopify is an online store platform. A bundle is a set of two or more related products, often sold at a discount. Shopify's help pages say you need a bundles app installed to create them. They describe three types:
- Fixed: a set list of products, such as a shampoo, a conditioner and a brush. If a part has variants (sizes or colors), the buyer picks one.
- Multipack: several of the same product, such as a 6-pack of socks.
- Mix-and-match: the buyer builds the set from a pool of products.
The free app, Shopify Bundles, covers fixed bundles and multipacks and is available on all Shopify plans. It does not support mix-and-match. For that, Shopify points to third-party apps in its App Store, or to the Bundles API on Shopify Plus (Shopify's enterprise plan).
How to create a bundle with the free app
- Create the individual products first, with inventory tracking on.
- In your admin, go to Apps, then Bundles, and click Create bundle.
- Enter a title and click Select products. Choose the parts and set the quantity of each.
- Pick which variants to include. Add quantity as an option if buyers can choose 2, 4 or 6.
- Click Save and continue, then add the usual product details such as images and description.
- New bundles start as Draft. Set the status to Active to publish.
Limits from Shopify's pages: up to 30 components in a fixed bundle, up to 2,000 units per component, and up to 3 options and 100 variants per bundle.
How bundle stock is worked out
Shopify does not keep a separate stock number for the bundle. It calculates one. For each part, divide the stock you have by the quantity the bundle needs, then round down. The lowest result is how many bundles you can sell.
A made-up example: a gift set holds 2 mugs, 1 tin of tea and 1 spoon. You have 41 mugs, 18 tins and 25 spoons.
| Part | In stock | Needed per set | Sets possible |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mug | 41 | 2 | 20 |
| Tea tin | 18 | 1 | 18 |
| Spoon | 25 | 1 | 25 |
You can sell 18 gift sets. The tea decides it. Two details catch people: Shopify ignores a part in this count if its inventory is not tracked or if it is set to continue selling when out of stock. So one badly set part can make a bundle look available when it is not. The Shopify Bundles page also says bundles do not track stock by location, only overall stock.
Can you bundle without an app?
Shopify's help pages say a bundles app is needed to create product bundles, so the built-in route is the free app. The no-app alternative is a plain "kit" product that you create yourself, with its own SKU and its own stock count. It works, but you must lower the parts' stock by hand when a kit sells, or the counts drift apart. I only suggest it when you sell a handful of kits.
What breaks across channels
- Other marketplaces. Shopify says bundles can be sold on the Online Store, Shop and Shopify POS, and on Google & YouTube for fixed bundles. Amazon (a large online marketplace), eBay (an auction and fixed-price marketplace) and Etsy (a marketplace for handmade and vintage goods) are not on that list. If you sell the parts there, check how your sync app passes part stock through. If you list a whole bundle on a marketplace as its own item, you are back to managing a separate stock number. See my Shopify Amazon sync problems guide.
- SKU changes. A bundle gets its own SKU. If a part's SKU changes, Shopify says you must delete and recreate the whole bundle.
- Prices. If a part's price changes, the bundle price does not update. You must change it by hand. Bundles also do not support import, export or bulk editing, so my bulk price update guide will not cover them.
- Not compatible with subscriptions, pre-orders, try-before-you-buy, custom products, or bundles inside bundles. Bundles also cannot be used in exchanges.
- Orders. Orders list the SKUs of the individual parts, not the bundle SKU, and weight comes from the parts. That helps your warehouse, but it can confuse reports.
- Returns. You cannot mark a bundle as final sale. Return eligibility follows the parts.
When you need a custom bundle rule
The built-in method fails when you need rules such as: hold back 5 units of a part for marketplace orders, or reduce the parts' stock on every channel at the same moment. For that, one rule engine should own stock for all channels. It reads orders from each channel, subtracts the parts, recalculates every bundle and pushes the new numbers out. What stock sync apps say about bundles
Some stock sync apps keep their own bundle list outside Shopify, so the same rule can reach other channels. Sumtracker, a stock sync subscription, says on its Etsy, Amazon FBM and Amazon FBA pages that you can create bundles, kits and combos with any number of components and that it updates stock in the store accordingly. Its Shopify page says it detects SKU changes in Shopify and updates them, and links products with the same SKU across stores. Those are the vendor's statements about its own product, so test before you trust them. A simple test: set up one bundle with two parts, sell one on a single channel, and check that each part dropped by its set quantity on every channel within a few minutes. Then change one part's SKU and check that the bundle still points at it. Do it with stock you can afford to miscount.
Common mistakes
- Leaving "continue selling when out of stock" on for one part.
- Renaming SKUs after the bundle exists.
- Expecting a bundle to show the right number on a marketplace with no extra setup.
- Forgetting to republish the bundle after the status flips to Draft. Shopify says a store that becomes ineligible, for example by using checkout.liquid customizations, sets fixed bundles to Draft.
How I'd approach this
If you sell only on your own store, use the free app, turn tracking on for every part and stop there. If you also sell on marketplaces, decide first which channels get bundles and which get parts only. Selling bundles in Shopify and loose parts on Amazon is a common and sensible split, as long as one stock number rules both. Beyond that, a small custom rule that owns the stock for every channel is cheaper than the oversells it prevents. Questions people ask
Can Shopify track bundle inventory?
Yes. Shopify calculates it from the parts: the part you have the least of decides how many bundles you can sell. It ignores parts that are not tracked or that are set to continue selling when out of stock.
Is there a free bundles app for Shopify?
Yes. Shopify Bundles is a free first-party app available on all plans. It supports fixed bundles and multipacks, not mix-and-match.
Can I bundle two products without an app?
Shopify says a bundles app is needed to create product bundles. Without one, you can make a separate kit product with its own SKU and stock count, and manage the parts' stock yourself.
Why is my Shopify bundle inventory not working?
Check that every part has inventory tracking on and is not set to continue selling when out of stock. If a part's SKU changed, Shopify says you must recreate the bundle. Also check that the bundle is Active, not Draft.
Do Shopify bundles work on Amazon or Etsy?
Shopify's list of bundle sales channels covers the Online Store, Shop, Shopify POS and, for fixed bundles, Google & YouTube. Amazon and Etsy are not on it, so plan stock for those separately. See the inventory management system guide.
