How to sync TikTok Shop with Shopify so orders and stock stay in step

By Ranjit Bhinge, founder of Blur Studio · Updated · 5 min read

Short answer: Install the TikTok app from the Shopify App Store, which is free to install and made by TikTok. It syncs your Shopify products to TikTok Shop and lets you manage TikTok Shop orders and inventory from your Shopify admin. Shopify stays the master record and TikTok is one more sales channel. The weak point is speed: a video that goes viral can sell your stock in an hour, and any other channel drawing on the same stock can oversell before the numbers catch up.

You want TikTok Shop connected to Shopify so products, orders and stock flow through one place without overselling.

I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.

What connecting TikTok Shop to Shopify means

TikTok Shop is the part of TikTok where people buy products inside videos, LIVE streams and shop pages. Shopify's help pages describe three ways to sell: LIVE shopping, shoppable in-feed videos, and a product showcase on your TikTok profile. The customer buys on TikTok and you fulfill the order from your Shopify admin.

The link between them is the TikTok app on the Shopify App Store, published by TikTok Inc. The App Store lists it as free to install (with a note that additional charges may apply, such as ad spend), with a 4.8 rating from about 16,000 reviews. Ad spend, if you run TikTok ads, is billed to your TikTok ad account, not to Shopify. The listing says the app syncs products from Shopify to TikTok, and that you manage TikTok Shop orders and inventory within your Shopify admin.

How to connect them

  1. Get TikTok Shop access. Per Shopify's setup page, your store must be located in the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, Ireland, France, Italy, Germany, Mexico, Japan or Brazil, have a verifiable address under Locations in settings, and show a return policy page. You also need an online store and a TikTok for Business account, which you can create during setup.
  2. Clean your product data first. Titles, categories, images and codes (SKUs) should be complete. TikTok can reject a product with missing fields, and Celigo, an integration company, notes that pushing listings without checking them first leads to rejections while stock keeps syncing.
  3. Install the TikTok app in Shopify. Go to the Shopify App Store, install the TikTok sales channel and follow Shopify's setup guide for TikTok Shop. The steps change from time to time, so use the current help page.
  4. Choose which products to sync. Start with 5 to 10 products you can restock easily.
  5. Place a test order. Buy one item on TikTok and check that the order shows up in Shopify and that stock drops on both sides.
  6. Add the rest in batches. Check for rejected products each day for the first week.

Refunds, returns and cancellationsDone in TikTok Seller Center, not ShopifyShopify's help page says to complete them in TikTok, and Celigo says they may not reflect properly in Shopify; run a test refund

The Celigo points come from a company that sells integration software, so read them as risks to test for, not as measured failure rates. Run a test refund before you rely on the app for accounting.

Money works differently from a normal Shopify order. Shopify's help page says checkout for TikTok Shop is powered by TikTok, payment is processed by TikTok, and the funds go to the bank account you connect in TikTok Seller Center, after a settlement period you can review in the Finance section. TikTok Shop has charged a referral fee on qualified transactions since 16 April 2024, so your margin per sale is not the same as on your own store. Also note that if products fail to sync with a location address error, Shopify says to keep the location name to 35 characters or fewer and make the address match Google Maps.

Why TikTok spikes cause overselling

TikTok traffic comes in bursts. One creator video can send hundreds of orders in an hour. Meanwhile your Shopify store, Amazon and Etsy draw on the same stock. If the sync runs on a schedule, there is a gap, and during that gap every channel believes it has stock.

A made-up example. You hold 120 units. A video lands, and TikTok sells 90 in an hour. Amazon sells 25 in the same hour. Shopify sells 10. That is 125 orders against 120 units. Five customers get refunds, and the reviews you worked for take a hit.

AfterShip Feed, a tool that sends product data from a store to marketplaces including TikTok, documents a second cause. When a product joins a TikTok campaign, TikTok reserves a quantity. That reserved amount can only go up while the campaign is pending or running, and AfterShip can only update the unreserved part. If Shopify stock falls to or below the reserved amount, the TikTok number stops following it. Other tools may behave differently, so read the help page for yours.

AfterShip's help page also lists two guards you can use against overselling: send only a percentage of your Shopify stock to TikTok, and set an out-of-stock threshold. It notes TikTok's inventory display limit is 99,999.

TikTok Shop vs Shopify

They are not rivals. Shopify is where you run your own store and keep your customer list. TikTok Shop is a channel where strangers find you inside videos. You need both: Shopify as the master record, TikTok as a place to sell from. If you are weighing platforms for the store itself, see Shopify alternatives.

How I'd approach this

Start with the official app and 5 to 10 products. Keep Shopify as the master and never edit stock in TikTok by hand. Before a planned push, such as a creator campaign, send TikTok a share of your stock rather than all of it. A safe first rule is half. Raise it as you see how fast it sells.

Look for a pattern in every oversell. If it keeps coming from delay, that points to a process problem, not a bad app. The fix is one stock record, a buffer per channel and an alert when a number drifts.
