Why is my TikTok Shop not syncing with Shopify, and how do I fix it?
Short answer: Most TikTok Shop sync failures trace back to four things: a bad warehouse location address in Shopify, products TikTok has disapproved, a store that does not meet TikTok's setup rules, or a product that is out of stock at the moment an order arrives. TikTok Shop is the part of TikTok where people buy products inside the app, and Shopify is the online store platform that holds your catalog. Shopify's own help pages say TikTok runs the product sync on its side, so some fixes are in Shopify and some are with TikTok support. The fix list below goes in the order I would check it.
Your products are missing from TikTok Shop, or orders are not reaching Shopify, and you want to know which setting to check first.
I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.
How the sync works
When you connect the TikTok sales channel (the Shopify app that links your store to TikTok Shop), Shopify and TikTok exchange four things: your product catalog, your stock counts, your orders and your fulfillment details. Shopify's help pages say your products sync to TikTok automatically once you set up the channel, and that you fulfill TikTok orders from your normal Shopify Orders page.
One detail matters for everything below. Shopify says TikTok manages the product sync process. That means Shopify cannot always show you why something failed. Sometimes the cause is on TikTok's side, and the only fix is a support ticket.
Five quick checks before anything else
- Is the channel fully set up? In Shopify admin, open Sales channels, then TikTok. Setup ends with verifying your shop information and uploading documents. If you stopped at "Finish setup", nothing will sync properly.
- Is the product available to the TikTok channel? Shopify lets you include or exclude each product from each sales channel. A product that is not made available to TikTok will not appear there.
- Does the product have stock? TikTok checks stock before it lets an order through (more on this below).
- Is the product allowed? TikTok keeps a list of prohibited products for each country. A product on that list is blocked.
- Did you only change it a minute ago? Give a sync a little time before you start changing settings. I would wait before changing anything else.
Check the store requirements first
Shopify lists what your store needs for TikTok Shop to work. If one is missing, the sync can fail even when everything else looks right.
- A verifiable address in your Locations settings.
- A store located in one of these countries: the United States, United Kingdom, Spain, Ireland, France, Italy, Germany, Mexico, Japan or Brazil.
- An online store and a TikTok for Business account (the TikTok account type for sellers).
- A return policy page displayed on your online store.
The return policy page is the one people forget. If you set up the store quickly and never added one, fix that first.
Fix the location address error
Shopify documents one specific error for this. The message reads "Your products couldn't be synced to TikTok due to a location address issue." TikTok needs a valid warehouse address and phone number to sync your catalog. Shopify's fix has two steps. In Settings, then Locations:
- Keep the location name to 35 characters or fewer. Shorten it if it is longer.
- Make the address match what Google Maps shows for that address. If it does not match, change it to match Google Maps.
If the error stays after that, Shopify says to contact TikTok Shop support. You can also click Get Support inside the TikTok sales channel.
Here is the trap. Many stores name a location something like "Main warehouse and returns, Building 4, North Dock". It reads fine to your team and breaks the sync. Use a short plain name.
Fix disapproved products
If products show as disapproved in the TikTok channel, Shopify gives these steps:
- In Shopify admin, go to Sales channels, then TikTok.
- In the Product status section, click the number next to Disapproved.
- Read the disapproval reason for each product.
- Change the product to fix the reason.
If the products stay disapproved after you fix them, Shopify says to contact TikTok support, because TikTok runs that process. Read the actual reason shown for each product rather than guessing.
Orders not showing up in Shopify
This one surprises people. Shopify's help page says that when an order is placed, TikTok syncs with Shopify to check inventory. If you have inventory, an order is created in your Shopify admin. If inventory is not available, the order is not created.
So a missing order is often not a bug. It can mean the stock count in Shopify was zero, or lower than the order, at that moment. Check these:
- Is inventory tracking turned on for the product? Shopify's inventory pages cover how to turn it on.
- Is the stock sitting at the right location? Shopify tracks stock per location (a place where you store and fulfill inventory). If the stock is at a location that does not fulfill TikTok orders, the product can look out of stock to TikTok.
- Was the stock held up by something else, such as a pending order from your own store?
Also remember where refunds, returns and cancellations live. Shopify says you complete those in TikTok Seller Center (TikTok's dashboard for sellers), not in Shopify. If you refund in Shopify only, the two systems disagree.
Looks the same, but is not a sync failure
| What you see | What it usually is |
|---|---|
| Product missing on TikTok | Not made available to the channel, disapproved, or blocked by a location error |
| Order missing in Shopify | Stock showed zero at the moment of purchase, so no order was created |
| Stock count looks wrong | Stock is at a different location, or another channel took it |
| Refund shows in one place only | Refund was done in the wrong system |
Treat these as four separate problems. Changing settings at random usually makes it harder to tell which one you had.
The viral day problem
None of the fixes above help on the day a video takes off. Then the issue is speed. Orders arrive faster than your stock count can be trusted, and the same units are also on your own store, and maybe Amazon.
Here is a made-up example, with made-up figures. You have 40 units of a product. A video lands and 25 people check out on TikTok within a few minutes while 20 more buy on your own site. Both channels showed 40 when each buyer began. Counts update, but the last few buyers can still hit a stale number. Depending on timing, you either refuse real orders or you need to apologize to people who paid for stock that was gone.
Shopify's behavior in the other direction is helpful: if stock is not there, the order simply is not created. That protects you from overselling, but it also means lost sales if your count is wrong or too tight.
How to prevent it
- Hold a stock buffer for TikTok. Do not give TikTok every unit. If you own 40, let each fast channel see fewer, and keep a reserve you can release by hand. This is my own rule of thumb, not a Shopify setting.
- Keep one clean location. One short, correctly addressed location removes the most common error.
- Check Product status weekly. Disapprovals appear quietly. A 30-second look prevents a week of missing products.
- Set a low-stock alert. Get a message when a hot item drops under a threshold you choose, so you can pause promotion or restock.
- Do refunds and cancellations in the right place. For TikTok orders, that is Seller Center.
A stock buffer and a low-stock alert are the two things a plain Shopify setup does not give you out of the box. If you sell on more than one channel, see my guide to multichannel inventory management software. If the same pain shows up between Shopify and Amazon, I covered it in Shopify and Amazon integration not working.
When it signals a bigger problem
If you fix the address, clear the disapprovals, and still get stock disagreements every few weeks, the real issue is that no one place owns the truth about your stock. Each channel keeps its own copy and tries to stay in step. That works at ten orders a day and breaks at a few hundred. Writing the steps down is the first move, and my guide to business process automation shows how. There is also an AI version of this article, how AI can help with TikTok Shop and Shopify sync problems, covering what a language model can and cannot do here. How I'd approach this
I would work down the list in order, and I would not skip the boring steps. First confirm the channel setup and the return policy page. Second, fix the location name and address so it matches Google Maps. Third, open Product status and clear disapprovals. Fourth, check that stock sits at the right location. Only then call TikTok support, and bring the exact error text with you.
After that, think about the viral day before it happens. Pick the three products most likely to take off, decide how many units each channel may see, and set an alert on them. If you find yourself doing that by hand every week across Shopify, TikTok and Amazon, a small custom connection that holds the real count and pushes a safe number to each channel is worth building. That is the kind of job I do, and you can see what that work includes.
Questions people ask
Why are my Shopify products not showing on TikTok Shop?
Check four things: the channel setup is finished, the product is made available to the TikTok channel, the product is not disapproved, and your location address has no error. Shopify's help page on managing product availability explains how to include or exclude products and read disapproval reasons.
What does the TikTok location address error mean?
It means TikTok could not accept your warehouse or fulfillment location. Shopify says to keep the location name to 35 characters or fewer and make the address match what Google Maps shows. If the error remains, contact TikTok Shop support.
Why did a TikTok order not appear in my Shopify orders?
Shopify says TikTok checks your inventory when an order is placed. If stock is available, an order is created in Shopify. If it is not, the order is not created. Check that inventory tracking is on and that the stock is at the right location.
Where do I refund or cancel a TikTok Shop order?
In TikTok Seller Center, not in Shopify. Shopify's help page says refunds, returns and cancellations for TikTok Shop orders are completed there. You still fulfill the order from your Shopify Orders page.
Who fixes a sync problem, Shopify or TikTok?
It depends on the cause. Shopify's help says TikTok manages the product sync process and runs TikTok Shop support. Fix what you can in Shopify (location, product status, return policy page), then use Get Support inside the TikTok sales channel for the rest.
How do I avoid overselling when a TikTok video goes viral?
Do not expose all your stock to one channel. Keep a reserve, set a low-stock alert on your best sellers, and consider a tool that holds one real count. My guide to AI inventory management covers what is possible.
