Zoho Inventory vs Shopify: do you need both, or is Shopify's stock tracking enough?

By Ranjit Bhinge, founder of Blur Studio · Updated · 5 min read

Short answer: If you sell mostly on one Shopify store, Shopify's own inventory tools are probably enough. Shopify is the online store platform, and it already tracks stock by location, handles purchase orders, transfers and stock counts. Zoho Inventory, a separate software subscription for stock and order management, earns its place when you also sell on Amazon or Etsy, run wholesale, or need one master count across several channels. As of November 2026, Zoho's plans are capped by monthly orders, users and locations, so check those limits against your busiest month.

You already run on Shopify and want to know whether adding Zoho Inventory fixes a real problem or just adds another bill.

I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.

The short version

These two are not true rivals. Shopify runs your store and tracks the stock inside it. Zoho Inventory sits above or beside your channels and keeps one master count. The question is whether you need that extra layer.

Pick Shopify alone if you sell on one store, have one or two locations, and do not mind a little hand work. Pick Zoho Inventory if you sell on two or more channels, handle wholesale or purchase orders in volume, or need to know your true stock without logging into four places.

What Shopify does on its own

Shopify's help pages say you manage inventory quantities, transfers and purchase orders directly in your Shopify admin. In plain terms:

  • Locations. A location is any place you store or fulfill stock. You need at least one to track inventory. Shopify's pricing page lists 10 locations on its Basic, Grow and Advanced plans and 200 on Plus.
  • Adjustments and stock counts. You can adjust quantities and run a stock count to check your records against the shelf. Every adjustment is recorded with a time and a reason.
  • Transfers. Move stock between locations and receive it at the other end.
  • Purchase orders. Order from suppliers and receive items against the order.
  • Other channels. Shopify's pricing page lists selling on social and marketplaces, and shows that synced marketplace orders are free up to 50 a month, then 1% per extra synced order, up to $99 a month. Check Shopify's pricing page for the terms on your plan.

For a single-store business that is a lot. Many sellers never outgrow it.

What Zoho Inventory adds

Zoho's own channel pages describe the extra layer. Its Shopify and Amazon pages say that when an order arrives from any channel, the stock on hand for that item is pushed to every channel. Beyond that:

  • One master count across Shopify, Amazon and others, with orders from every channel in one list.
  • FBA support. FBA, Fulfillment by Amazon, means Amazon stores and ships your goods. Zoho says it lets you send items to FBA, link FBA and self-shipped versions of an item, and fulfill other channels' orders through FBA.
  • Batch and serial tracking for goods with expiry dates or serial numbers. Zoho lists these from its Premium plan.
  • Barcode generation, stock counting and profit margin, also from Premium.
  • Wholesale tools. Zoho lists price lists, a customer portal and vendor portal, backorders and dropshipping on its plans.
  • Shipping. Zoho says it connects to more than 40 carriers.
  • An API for custom work, with a limit of 100 requests a minute per organization.

What about QuickBooks and WooCommerce?

People search for these because they are tools they already use. QuickBooks is accounting software, and WooCommerce is a store plugin for WordPress. Neither is a direct match for this comparison. Zoho lists WooCommerce among its store integrations, so it can sit under that kind of store the same way it sits under Shopify. For accounting, Zoho lists its own Zoho Books and a Tally link on its integration list. If you run QuickBooks, check the exact link you need before assuming it works.

Where Zoho falls short

  • Another system to learn. Staff now live in two places.
  • Order caps and add-ons. The monthly order cap means busy months can force a plan change.
  • Same count everywhere. Zoho's pages describe pushing the same stock on hand to every channel. They do not describe a different safe number per channel, which matters for fast-moving items.
  • Syncs run on a schedule for items. Zoho says item syncs happen on a schedule, with a manual sync to catch up.
  • Odd products need work. Bundles and special rules often need custom logic.

Pick Shopify if, pick Zoho if

Pick Shopify inventory if you sell on one store, you have one or two stock locations, you ship what you hold, and you can count shelves yourself once a quarter.

Pick Zoho Inventory if you sell on Shopify plus Amazon or Etsy, you use FBA, you take wholesale orders, you track batches or serial numbers, or you spend hours fixing counts that disagree.

A worked example with made-up figures: a seller does 300 orders a month on Shopify only, with one warehouse. Shopify alone is enough. Six months later they add Amazon and now do 300 on Shopify and 250 on Amazon, 550 in all. Counts start to drift and they oversell twice in a month. Now a master count is worth paying for, and 550 orders is above the 500 on Zoho's Standard plan, so budget for a block of extra orders or a higher plan.

Need something completely custom?

Everything above is a path to get it running quick and cheap. But sometimes none of these fit, and what you need is something custom that you own, built uniquely for your business from the ground up, with AI thoughtfully designed into the parts of it that your processes actually benefit from. An asset that grows in value, not a generic, one-size-fits-all boilerplate that's an expense with a lock-in. This is a complete bespoke build, and it's something I do very well. How I'd approach this

I would stay on Shopify alone until the pain is real: oversold orders, hours of manual counting, or a second channel that matters. Do not buy a master system to solve a problem you do not have yet.

When you do get there, write down your top ten products, your busiest month's order count, and every channel you sell on. Then test Zoho on its free trial with those ten products only. If the numbers stay right for two weeks, expand. If you keep needing rules it cannot do, that is the signal to look at a small custom link rather than a bigger plan.

Questions people ask

Do I need Zoho Inventory if I only sell on Shopify?

Usually not. Shopify tracks stock by location, handles purchase orders, transfers and stock counts. See Shopify's inventory and locations page for the full list. Zoho starts to pay off once you add a second channel.

How does Zoho Inventory sync with Shopify?

Zoho says items, sales orders, stock updates, shipment updates and customer contacts sync between the two. Items match by SKU or item name. My integration guide goes through setup and limits.

How many orders can Zoho Inventory handle?

It depends on the plan. Zoho's pricing page lists 50 orders a month on Free, 500 on Standard, 3,000 on Premium, 7,500 on Plus and 15,000 on Enterprise, with add-on blocks of 500 orders.

Does Zoho Inventory support Amazon FBA?

Yes. Zoho's Amazon page says you can ship items to FBA, mark items as FBA, and link FBA and self-shipped items to one Zoho item.

What does Zoho Inventory cost compared to Shopify?

They are separate bills. Shopify's price is your store plan. Zoho's price is its own plan plus any add-ons. Both vary by region, so check Shopify's pricing and Zoho's pricing page in your own currency.
