Can AI clean my product data and write listings for each channel?

By Ranjit Bhinge, founder of Blur Studio · Updated · 5 min read

Short answer: Yes, with a review step. AI is good at cleaning a messy product sheet and rewriting one master record into a title, bullets and description for each channel. It is not good at knowing facts it was never given, such as a real dimension or a safety claim. Tools range from Shopify's built-in assistant Sidekick, to Helium 10 (a software suite for Amazon sellers) and its AI Listing Builder, to a general assistant like Claude. Let AI draft, and let a person approve before anything goes live.

You sell the same products on Shopify, Amazon and Etsy and want AI to stop you rewriting every listing by hand for each one.

I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.

If you want to see which listing jobs would pay back first in your own shop, the AI Strategy Sprint maps that out in 3 days.

What the problem really is

Selling on several channels means one product has several faces. Amazon wants a short title and five bullets. Etsy wants tags and a story. Shopify wants a clean title, a description and the right columns in its import file. The product facts are the same. The format is not.

Most sellers handle this with copy and paste. Over time the descriptions drift apart, a size changes in one place and not another, and nobody knows which version is right. The fix is a single master record per product, then channel versions made from it. AI helps with both halves: cleaning the master and producing the versions.

Step 1: Clean the master data

A master record is one row per product or variant with the facts only: SKU (your stock code for the item), brand, model, size, color, material, weight, dimensions, what is in the box, and any compliance notes. No marketing words yet.

AI is useful here for jobs that are dull and rule-based:

  • Standardize values: "Med", "M" and "medium" all become "Medium".
  • Split a long supplier title into brand, model and attributes.
  • Find rows with a missing weight, a missing color or a duplicate SKU.
  • Convert units, with a note on every change so you can check it.

Give the AI the sheet and ask it to return a table plus a separate list of every cell it changed. That list is your review. For reading supplier PDFs into the sheet, see AI document processing.

Step 2: Write the channel versions

Now give the AI the clean record and the rules for one channel. Rules matter more than the prompt wording. For each channel, write down title length, whether the brand goes first, banned claims, and what the bullets should cover. Then the AI writes a draft per channel. Read the rules on each marketplace's own seller help pages, since they change.

Check each channel's hard limits before you ask for drafts. On Etsy, a listing can have up to 13 tags, each up to 20 characters, using only letters, numbers and spaces (apostrophes and hyphens are allowed inside a word, not at the start). Etsy's help page describes a tag as a word or short phrase that matches what a shopper might type, such as "gift for her", so thirteen stuffed fragments is the wrong draft. Put the 20-character limit in your rules and ask the AI to return each tag with its length. In my experience models miscount characters, so check the longest tags yourself.

The tools you can use:

Claude or another general assistantAn AI assistant you paste data intoFree and paid plans, check the vendorAny channel, small catalogs
Shopify SidekickShopify's AI assistant inside the store admin; its page lists product descriptions as a promptIncluded with Shopify, check your planYour own Shopify store
Helium 10 Listing BuilderAmazon seller software with an AI listing writer and keyword suggestions; it can sync to Seller CentralPlans from $99 a month billed yearly ($129 monthly); the Diamond plan at $279 a month billed yearly ($359 monthly) lists the AI Listing BuilderAmazon sellers who want keyword data
SellbriteA GoDaddy tool that lists the same products on Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Walmart and ShopifyFree to start with 14 days of full access, check its pricing pagePushing one catalog to many marketplaces

For a catalog of a few hundred products, I would start with the general assistant. You pay nothing extra and you control the rules. A paid tool earns its fee when it brings something AI alone does not have, such as keyword search data on Amazon.

Step 3: Get it into each channel

On Shopify the usual route is a CSV import. Shopify's help page says the file cannot exceed 15 MB, the import cannot be canceled once it starts, and a blank cell in a column you include overwrites the live value with a blank. It also warns that sorting the file in a spreadsheet can break the links between rows and image URLs. So export first, keep a backup, change only the columns you need and test on a few products.

Three more details from the same page decide whether an update works. First, when you re-import products that already exist, you must tick "Overwrite products with matching handles", otherwise Shopify ignores rows whose handle (the product's name in its web address) already exists. Second, a column left out of the file keeps its current value, but a SKU column without the option name and option value columns deletes the variant option. Third, Shopify suggests trying the import on a test store first, and after a real import you can review the changes in the store's activity log, because there is no import history. Header names must match the sample file exactly, including capital letters, so write Handle, not handle.

For other channels, use their own bulk upload templates or a listing tool like Sellbrite. If you need stock counts to stay in step as well, see my page on multichannel inventory management software.

Where AI gets listings wrong

  • Invented facts. If the record does not say "waterproof", the draft may. Tell it to use only the facts provided and to write "unknown" for anything missing.
  • Claims you cannot make. Words like "medical grade", "organic" or "FDA approved" can break marketplace rules and the law. Keep a banned list.
  • Keyword stuffing. Drafts can read like a list of search terms. Read each title aloud.
  • Look-alike variants. A navy and a black item may get the same copy. Check variants separately.
  • Silent overwrites. A model that rewrites a whole sheet can change cells you did not ask about. Always ask for a change list.

A made-up example

Master record: Brand Northfield, Model NF-220, stainless steel travel mug, 16 oz, keeps drinks hot for up to 6 hours (tested by the maker), fits most cup holders, hand wash only.

Amazon draft title: "Northfield NF-220 Stainless Steel Travel Mug, 16 oz, Insulated, Fits Cup Holders". Etsy draft: a warmer title and a short story about the use. Shopify draft: a clean title and a description with a size table. Same facts in all three. A person checks "6 hours" against the maker's test notes before it goes live. These names and numbers are invented.

How I'd approach this

I would build the master sheet first, even before touching AI. Without it, AI just makes faster copies of a mess. Then pick your 20 best sellers, run them through the channel rules, and compare the drafts against what you have now. Keep a review column in the sheet with three states: draft, checked, live. If you reach several hundred products and the same steps repeat every week, a small tool that holds the master record, makes the channel versions and shows you only what changed is worth building. Questions people ask

Can AI import products into Shopify for me?

AI can prepare the CSV file, but you upload it in the Shopify admin. Follow Shopify's CSV format closely, and read the overwrite warnings above before you import.

Is Helium 10's AI Listing Builder worth paying for?

It makes sense if you sell on Amazon and want keyword data inside the writing step. If you only need drafts, a general assistant may be enough. Check Helium 10's pricing page for what each plan includes.

Do listings made with AI rank worse?

Accurate, specific listings tend to do better. Thin, repeated or wrong text does worse, however it was made. Make each listing accurate and specific to the product.

Do I need a product information management system?

Not at first. A well-kept spreadsheet works for a few hundred products. A dedicated system pays off with thousands of SKUs, many users or many channels.

How do I stop AI from making up product facts?

Give it only the master record, tell it to use nothing else, and ask it to write "unknown" for missing fields. Then review. My page on AI document processing covers checking extracted data.
