Car dealership CRM: how to compare the main options and use AI well

By Ranjit Bhinge, founder of Blur Studio · Updated · 7 min read

Short answer: A car dealership CRM tracks every lead, call, text, test drive and deal, and connects to your DMS, desking and inventory. The main options are VinSolutions from Cox Automotive, DealerSocket from Solera, CDK's CRM (formerly Elead) and DriveCentric. None of them publish prices as of October 2026, so you need quotes. Most dealers should buy one. Custom AI tools make sense on top of the CRM for follow-up, service and reporting across many stores.

You're comparing dealership CRMs and want to know not just which one sells more cars, but which one actually keeps you compliant with federal data rules.

I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.

What does a car dealership CRM need to do?

A dealer CRM does much more than a general sales CRM. These are the core jobs.

  • Lead capture from every source: Leads come from your website, third-party listing sites, phone calls, chat and walk-ins. Each one should land in the CRM with its source.
  • Fast lead response: The CRM assigns each lead to a salesperson or BDC agent and tracks how fast they reply.
  • Texting, email, calls and video: Staff talk to shoppers from inside the CRM, so every message is saved.
  • Desking: Sales managers build and compare deal options, such as cash, finance or lease.
  • DMS link: The CRM shares customer and deal data with your dealer management system, which runs accounting, parts and service.
  • Inventory link: Salespeople see live stock, prices and photos.
  • Equity mining: The CRM finds current customers who could trade into a new car for a similar payment.
  • Service-to-sales: Service customers with older cars get flagged as possible buyers.
  • Reports: Managers see lead counts, response times, appointments, shows and closes by salesperson.

What are the main car dealership CRMs?

None of the four vendors below publish prices on their sites as of October 2026. Each one asks you to book a demo or talk to sales. Get written quotes from at least two, and ask what is included at that price.

CRM Owner Main strengths it lists AI features it lists
VinSolutions Cox Automotive CRM, desking, marketing tied to Kelley Blue Book, Autotrader and Dealer.com Spots likely buyers from shopping behavior and runs 24/7 follow-up
DealerSocket Solera CRM, DMS, inventory, websites and equity mining in one family None listed on its home page
CDK CRM (formerly Elead) CDK Global Lead response, desking, a shared inbox and a customer data platform AI Virtual Assistant that engages, routes and follows up with leads
DriveCentric DriveCentric Built-in texting, email and live video, DMS and inventory links AI agents that answer new leads around the clock

VinSolutions

VinSolutions is part of Cox Automotive. It also offers desking and a marketing platform for email and text campaigns. That marketing platform connects with Kelley Blue Book, Autotrader and Dealer.com, which are also Cox brands. On the AI side, VinSolutions says its CRM identifies likely buyers from live shopping behavior and runs follow-up around the clock. This suits dealers who already use several Cox tools.

DealerSocket

DealerSocket is part of Solera's Vehicle Solutions group. It sells a CRM alongside its own DMS products, AutoMate and IDMS, plus inventory tools, DealerFire websites and an equity mining tool called RevenueRadar. It serves both franchise and independent dealers. This suits a dealer who wants CRM, DMS and websites from one company.

CDK CRM, formerly Elead

CDK Global bought ELEAD1ONE in September 2018 for an initial cash price of $513.0 million, according to its SEC filing. CDK's Elead page now presents CDK CRM. It lists lead response, desking, a shared inbox for email, text and chat and a built-in customer data platform. Its AI Virtual Assistant engages new leads, routes them and follows up. CDK also says its AI tools summarize conversations and draft messages. This suits dealers already on a CDK DMS.

DriveCentric

DriveCentric calls itself the CRM "your dealership wants to use." It puts texting, email and live video inside the CRM and connects to DMS and inventory feeds. Its AI agents act like a BDC team member that answers new leads at any hour and keeps following up. This suits dealers who want a modern, mobile-friendly CRM with AI built in.

DealerSocket vs VinSolutions, and what the FTC actually requires

Neither DealerSocket nor VinSolutions publishes pricing, both require a direct quote. In independent reviews, VinSolutions consistently rates easier to use and set up, with reviewers preferring its support quality and feature roadmap over DealerSocket's. DealerSocket's broader suite, CRM plus digital marketing, inventory management and analytics in one umbrella, suits a dealership that wants fewer vendors even if each individual piece is less polished.

Whichever CRM you choose, the FTC's Safeguards Rule applies to every covered dealership regardless of vendor, and it is more specific than most owners expect. It requires a named "qualified individual" responsible for your information security program, a written risk assessment, an incident response plan, encryption and multi-factor authentication, and a data breach report within 30 days of discovery. One detail that catches dealerships out: letting staff access the CRM from personal phones or off-site devices may itself violate the rule, worth checking with whoever manages your CRM access policy directly, not assuming the software vendor handles it for you.

What should you check before you sign a dealer CRM contract?

  • DMS fit: Ask how the CRM connects to your current DMS, and what data moves each way. A poor link means double entry.
  • OEM approval: If you sell a franchise brand, ask whether the manufacturer approves or requires certain CRMs.
  • Lead response time: Ask the vendor to show how a new web lead reaches a salesperson and how fast the AI replies.
  • Data ownership and export: Ask if you can export all customers, deals and message history if you leave. Get the answer in the contract.
  • Contract length: Ask about the term, the notice period and how much the price can rise at renewal.
  • Training and adoption: Ask who trains your staff and what support you get in the first 90 days.
  • Security: Ask how the vendor meets the FTC Safeguards Rule, covered below.

What rules apply to car dealers' customer data?

The FTC Safeguards Rule

The FTC's Safeguards Rule protects customer financial data held by financial institutions. The rule's own text gives one example that names dealers. A dealership that leases cars on a non-operating basis for more than 90 days is a financial institution for its leasing business. Dealers that arrange financing should check with their lawyer whether they are covered as well.

The rule asks covered businesses to take these steps.

  • Name a Qualified Individual: One person runs and oversees your security program.
  • Encrypt customer data: Data must be encrypted on your systems and while it moves.
  • Use multi-factor authentication: Anyone who opens customer data must pass a second check, such as a code on their phone.
  • Oversee your vendors: Pick vendors who can protect data, put security terms in your contracts and check them regularly.
  • Report big breaches: Since May 2024, you must tell the FTC within 30 days if a breach exposes unencrypted data for at least 500 people.

Your CRM vendor and any AI tool you add hold customer data, so both fall under the vendor oversight part.

The FTC CARS Rule

The FTC wrote a rule for car sales called the CARS Rule. On January 27, 2025, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals threw it out before it took effect, because the FTC skipped a required step in its process. Dealers should still expect the FTC and state officials to act on misleading prices, hidden add-ons and unclear finance terms. Keep your ads and deal sheets clear.

AI voice calls and texts

In February 2024, the FCC ruled that AI-generated voices count as "artificial" voices under the TCPA. Telemarketing robocalls that use them need the customer's prior express written consent. If an AI agent makes outbound sales calls, make sure you have that consent on file.

How can AI help a car dealership?

An AI agent that answers every lead in minutes

Many leads arrive at night or on weekends. An AI agent can reply in minutes, answer questions about a car and book a test drive. VinSolutions, CDK and DriveCentric all list this kind of tool. A person should take over once the shopper is ready to talk numbers. My guide to an AI sales development rep explains how these agents work.

A service lane assistant

Service calls tie up phones all day. An AI assistant can book service, answer "is my car ready?" and send updates from the DMS. It can also flag service customers whose cars have high repair costs as possible trade-in buyers. My guide to an AI customer service agent covers how to set one up.

Group reports that join every system

Dealer groups often run different CRMs and DMS systems across stores. AI can pull data from each system and answer plain questions. An owner might ask "which store has the slowest lead response this month?" This gives owners one view without asking each manager for a spreadsheet.

When does custom software make sense for a dealership?

Most dealers should buy a dealer CRM. These products already connect to DMS systems, listing sites and inventory feeds, which would take years to rebuild. A custom build makes sense around the CRM in these cases.

  • You run a dealer group with mixed systems: A custom data layer can join several CRMs and DMS systems into one dashboard.
  • You want AI agents tuned to your stores: A custom agent can follow your own scripts, pricing rules and hand-off steps, and work inside your CRM.
  • You run a special business model: Buy here pay here lots, rental-to-own programs and specialty vehicle dealers often have workflows dealer CRMs do not cover well.
  • You need tools for one team: A custom portal for your BDC, finance office or wholesale buyers can sit on top of your CRM data.

My guide to AI integration services explains how AI connects to the tools you already pay for.

How would Blur Studio approach a dealership project?

I start by tracing one lead from the first click to the sold car, and one service visit from booking to payment. That shows where leads go cold and where staff retype data. If your current CRM can fix it with better setup, I tell you that first.

When custom work fits, I builds AI agents, dashboards or portals that connect to your CRM and DMS. I build with the Safeguards Rule in mind, with encryption and multi-factor login. Your dealership owns the code and every account, and I supports the tools once they go live.

Questions people ask

What is the best CRM for car dealerships?

The main dealer CRMs are VinSolutions, DealerSocket, CDK CRM (formerly Elead) and DriveCentric. The best one for you depends on your DMS, your brands and how much AI follow-up you want. Get demos and written quotes from at least two.

How much does a car dealership CRM cost?

VinSolutions, DealerSocket, CDK and DriveCentric do not publish prices as of October 2026. Each one quotes after a demo. Ask what the quote includes, how long the contract runs and what happens to price at renewal.

Is Elead the same as CDK CRM?

CDK Global bought Elead in 2018. CDK's Elead page now presents CDK CRM, with lead response, desking and an AI Virtual Assistant. Ask CDK which version your store would get.

Does the FTC Safeguards Rule apply to car dealers?

The rule names dealerships that lease cars on a non-operating basis for more than 90 days as financial institutions for that leasing business. Dealers that arrange financing should check with a lawyer. Covered dealers need a security program with encryption, multi-factor login and vendor oversight.

How can AI help a car dealership sell more cars?

AI can reply to new leads within minutes, book test drives, follow up when staff are busy and flag service customers who may want a new car. It works best inside your CRM, with a person taking over for pricing and finance.

Is VinSolutions or DealerSocket easier to use?

VinSolutions rates higher in independent reviews for ease of use, setup and ongoing support. DealerSocket's advantage is a broader bundled suite covering marketing and inventory alongside the CRM, which can mean fewer vendors overall.

What does the FTC Safeguards Rule actually require of a dealership's CRM?

A named qualified individual overseeing security, a written risk assessment and incident response plan, encryption and multi-factor authentication, monitoring, and reporting a data breach within 30 days of discovering it. It also means thinking carefully about whether staff should access the CRM from personal devices at all.

Roughly what does this cost?

As a broad reference, fixes and finishes start at around $1,500, and new builds start higher, always a fixed price agreed in writing before I start, never an hourly rate. My AI app cost guide explains what actually drives a quote up or down.

Is my project too small for this?

No. Most of the owners I work with have no tech team at all, that is the whole point. If the smarter move is a cheap software subscription instead of custom software, I will tell you that on the first call, even though it means I do not get paid.
