Refunds, credits and billing: how to protect yourself when you subscribe to an AI tool

By Ranjit Bhinge, founder of Blur Studio · Updated · 11 min read

Short answer: Refunds on AI tools are usually only for the first purchase, and credits usually expire, so the protection happens before you pay. For Higgsfield, an AI image and video platform that sells monthly credits, the help center and Terms say a refund needs the initial purchase, within 7 days, with no credits used, and a fee of up to 6 percent can apply. Renewals are not refundable, cancelling does not refund, and subscription credits do not roll over. Read three lines, set two reminders and track your spend, and you avoid most billing regrets. Re-check the current terms before you buy.

Ranjit Bhinge

Most billing complaints about AI tools come from the same three surprises: a renewal you forgot, credits that expired, and a refund window that closed after one click on Generate.

I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.

AI tools sell you credits, which are points you spend each time you make an image or a clip. The rules about those credits, and about refunds, sit in terms most people never read. People find out the rules afterwards, usually when a renewal charge arrives or the balance goes to zero at the end of a month.

This page is about the moment of purchase. I use Higgsfield as the worked example because its help center and Terms of Use (last updated 23 October 2026) spell the rules out clearly, then compare with a few other tools. I do not repeat plan prices here, because they change. For those, see Higgsfield pricing explained, and check the live pricing page. This is general information, not legal advice.

The one rule: refunds are for the first purchase only

Across most AI tools the pattern is the same. There is a short window after your first payment. After that, the money is gone. Renewals are treated as a service already delivered. Cancelling stops the next charge but does not return the last one. Keep these three actions apart in your head:

  • Refund: you get money back. Rare, narrow and usually time-limited.
  • Cancel: you stop future charges. You keep access until the period ends, or lose it, depending on the tool. For Higgsfield, see how to cancel Higgsfield and what happens to credits.
  • Expire: credits you paid for disappear on a date. Nobody refunds those.

If you remember only one thing: the safest time to test a tool is the first few days, with the refund window still open, and before you spend a single credit.

Higgsfield's rules in plain words

Here is what Higgsfield's help center and Terms of Use say, in my words. Terms change, so open the current ones before you pay.

QuestionWhat the vendor says
Can I get a refund?Within 7 days of the initial purchase, if no credits were used (Terms section 9.3). A service fee of up to 6 percent applies where the law allows.
What about renewals? The help center says "Renewals aren't refundable."
Does cancelling refund me?No. Cancelling stops future charges. The Terms say there is no prorated refund of the current term (sections 10.3 and 10.4).
Can I upgrade and get money back?Upgrades within 7 days can be refunded if no credits of the upgraded plan were used (section 9.3).
UK, EU, EEA?A 14-day withdrawal right applies. Email support to use it. The help center says it ends early once you start using digital content from that purchase, such as spending credits, and you pay for the part already provided (Terms section 17.2). Read both lines.
Do subscription credits roll over? No. The help center says subscription credits expire at the end of each billing cycle (Terms section 9.4).
Do top-up credits expire?Top-up, auto-refill and boost credits last 90 days (Terms section 9.6). They are used after subscription credits.
Do packs and auto-refill have a refund window? The help center says credit packs and auto-refill are refundable within 7 days if unused.
Are special offers refundable? The help center says offers that add credits are refundable within 7 days if those credits are unused, but offers that give you access or features (such as unlimited access, upgrades or priority) are not refundable once the access is granted.
How fast is an approved refund, and what happens to my plan? The help center says the money returns within 5 to 10 business days, and the subscription is cancelled immediately, so you move to the free tier at once.
Do free or unlimited generations count as credit use?The help center says using free or unlimited generations does not count as credit use.
When prices rise? The Terms say 30 days notice by email, from the next renewal term (section 10.1).
Trials and promotions? The Terms say trials and promotions convert to paid unless you cancel (section 10.7).

Two more details worth knowing. First, the help center says failed generations usually refund their credits automatically within minutes, though some models may not. Second, if you delete your account, credits are lost and the data goes through a 30-day recovery period, then is deleted. Higgsfield's pricing page also says prices exclude VAT and local taxes, which matters if you expense the purchase.

Credit pack sizes are listed in the help center, but pack prices are not printed on the pricing page or the help center, so none are quoted here. The price shows at checkout.

How other tools compare

Each vendor does this differently. A fair way to compare is to look at three lines in every tool: refund, expiry and what happens on cancel.

ToolRefundCredit expiryCancel
Higgsfield, AI image and video platformFirst purchase, 7 days, no credits used, fee up to 6 percentSubscription credits expire each cycle; top-ups 90 daysStops future charges; no refund
ElevenLabs, an AI voice and text to speech platformTerms section 6(e): "All sales are final"; refunds are at its sole discretionPrepaid credits expire 12 months after purchase (6(b)(vi)), and are forfeited on termination (6(b)(x))Cancel any time, no refund of fees paid, access until period end (6(a))
Runway, an AI video platformCheck the vendor pageCheck the vendor pageCheck the vendor page

The ElevenLabs row comes from its Terms of Use as of 4 November 2026. Runway's refund and credit rules change, so read its help articles directly. The pattern still holds: expiry rules differ a lot. A tool that lets credits live 12 months is a different risk from one that resets them every month. For ElevenLabs specifics, see how to cancel ElevenLabs and ask for a refund.

Competitors can be better on this one point: if you are a light, irregular user, a tool with longer credit life or pay-as-you-go packs suits you better than a monthly allowance that resets. For Higgsfield, the 90-day top-up credits are the closest match, but they are used after subscription credits, so they sit unused while a monthly balance remains.

Do the refund-window test without spending credits

The 7-day refund needs zero credits used. That shapes how to start. A plan you can run:

  1. Buy the smallest monthly plan, not annual. If you want to try the monthly plan on Higgsfield first, the downside is one month instead of twelve.
  2. Do not click Generate on day one. Use the first 24 hours to check things that cost nothing: the account settings, the plan page, the usage log, the cancel path, how the Generate button shows the cost, and the commercial-use rules for your kind of work.
  3. Write your test brief before you buy. Decide the one job you need the tool to do, such as five product images or one 10 second clip, and the pass and fail criteria. If you cannot define the job, you are not ready to pay.
  4. Decide on day 5. If the account does not look right for your job and you have used no credits, request the refund by day 6 or 7. Use the help center's refund request route and keep the confirmation email.
  5. If you do start generating, you accept the plan. A refund after credit use is not offered under the terms. Using free or unlimited generations does not count, but credits do.

The cost of an experiment is also lower if you know how credits are spent. See how to spend Higgsfield credits wisely before you start.

Calendar reminders and a card rule

Two reminders do most of the work.

  • Day 5 after purchase: refund decision. If you have not used the tool for its job, ask now.
  • Three days before every renewal: keep or cancel. For annual plans set this one a month ahead as well, because a full year of fees is at stake. Remember Higgsfield's price rises come with 30 days of email notice, which can land in a spam folder.

Card rule: pay with one named company card, not a personal one, and not a card shared across ten subscriptions. If the card number changes, you will see which tools fail. Put the renewal date in the shared calendar with the plan, the amount and the owner's name.

Also screenshot the pricing page and the Terms version (check the "Last updated" line) on purchase day. If a dispute starts, you can show what you agreed to. A countdown banner or a limited-time offer is not a reason to skip these steps. Promotions on Higgsfield change often, so check the pricing page and read the current terms of any deal.

Credits that expire: spend them or do not buy them

Expiring credits are the largest hidden cost. A plan that gives you, say, 1,000 credits a month (an illustrative number) and resets on the renewal date is a use-it-or-lose-it allowance. Some Trustpilot reviews of Higgsfield (rating 4.0 from about 5,300 reviews on 4 November 2026, re-check before relying on it) complain of credits expiring unused after renewals and of annual billing disputes. Those are opinions, not facts, but they match the written rules.

What to do:

  • Size the plan to your real use. Use the first month's usage log, not a guess. If you used half, drop a tier at the next renewal. Downgrades take effect next term (section 10.5), and the Terms warn you can lose content, so export what you need first.
  • Spend subscription credits first. Top-ups are used after them anyway, so top up only when you will run short before renewal.
  • Avoid auto-refill unless you have a cap. It spends money silently. Auto-refill credits last 90 days, but an unneeded refill is still an unneeded charge.
  • Plan work before the month ends, not during the last day. A queue of tasks beats a panic sprint.
  • Check promo credits' dates. Promo credits last until the date shown, according to the help center.

On the Team plan card, Higgsfield lists "unused first month credits roll over" for the business tier. Check the details on the current pricing page, because that wording applies to first-month credits only and bonus credits expire in 30 days.

Cancelling correctly and keeping your outputs

Cancel from the account's payment settings, or by email to Higgsfield support, per the Terms. For business workspaces the help center says to cancel under Manage Account and Organization, then submit the cancellation request form. Do it at least a few days before the renewal date, in case a form needs a reply. Then:

  1. Save the confirmation page or email.
  2. Download the outputs you need before your access ends. The Terms say your rights in exported outputs survive cancellation. Content stored in the account can be affected by plan changes.
  3. Spend any credits you want to use before the end of the period. Subscription credits stay usable only until the paid period ends. For top-up credits, the help center says purchased credits stay available on the free plan until their validity period ends, but the Terms (section 9.4) say unused credits expire on account cancellation. The two differ, so spend top-ups first or ask support in writing before you cancel.
  4. Check the next statement for a charge.

If you were charged after cancelling

Work in this order and keep every message.

  1. Check the date. If you cancelled after the renewal, the Terms say there is no refund of the current term.
  2. Write to support with the cancellation confirmation, the charge date and the amount. Ask for a reply in writing.
  3. If the vendor does not respond or acts against its own written terms, ask your card issuer about a chargeback. It is a last resort and may lead to the account being closed. Attach the screenshots from the day you bought.
  4. If you are in the UK, EU or EEA, ask support about your 14-day withdrawal right as soon as you see the problem.

In the US, consumer protection rules cover online subscriptions and cancellation. The Federal Trade Commission publishes guidance on this, so check ftc.gov and your state's rules rather than relying on a summary.

Track spend in a sheet

A simple table is enough. One row per charge:

Date | Tool | Plan | Amount | Credits received | Renewal date | Owner | Client or project | Credits used | Kept or cancelled

Add a line for tax, since Higgsfield prices exclude VAT, and a note of the invoice number. At each renewal, compare credits received with credits used. For client work, tracking AI spend by client shows how to bill credits back. For a wider review across all your subscriptions, see how to audit your AI tool subscriptions.

Who should not buy annual

Annual plans save money on the sticker price, but you commit for a year, renewals are not refundable and unused monthly credits still expire. I would skip annual if any of these are true:

  • You have not completed a full month of real use.
  • Your work is seasonal or irregular.
  • You are an agency testing the tool for one client who has not signed yet.
  • The tool changes models and features often, which can change credit costs. The Terms allow model changes, with a pro-rata refund if a paid feature is discontinued or materially degraded (section 1.7).

Who should skip Higgsfield entirely? If you need something you can pause for months without losing paid credits, or you only make a few images a year, a tool with pay-per-use or longer credit life, or a stock library, may fit better. See free versus paid on Higgsfield for what the free tier gives you, and whether Higgsfield is safe and legit for the wider picture.

How I'd approach this

I would buy one month, not twelve. I would write down the single job the tool must do, spend the first day only reading settings and cost labels, and set the day-5 and pre-renewal reminders before closing the tab. If the first use does not fit, I would ask for the refund inside the window and move on without guilt. If it fits, I would measure cost per approved result for a month, then decide whether annual billing makes sense.

If your team buys several tools and loses track of renewals, Blur Studio can build a simple renewal and spend tracker that sits where your team already works. A shared sheet is fine to start.

Questions people ask

Can I get a refund after using some credits?

Under Higgsfield's terms, no. Higgsfield's refund needs the initial purchase, within 7 days, with zero credits used, and a fee of up to 6 percent can apply. Using free or unlimited generations does not count as credit use, the help center says. Confirm on the current refund page.

Do unused credits roll over?

On Higgsfield, subscription credits expire at the end of each billing cycle, while top-up, auto-refill and boost credits last 90 days. Other tools differ: ElevenLabs prepaid credits expire 12 months after purchase, per its terms. For Runway and others, check the vendor page.

Does cancelling refund me?

No. Cancelling stops future charges only. Higgsfield's Terms say there is no prorated refund of the current term. See the table in Higgsfield pricing explained for how plans and credits work together.

Is there a 14 day right in the UK or EU?

Higgsfield's help center says the EU, EEA and UK have a 14-day withdrawal right and to contact support. Its Terms add that the right is lost for credits once supplied. Ask support at once and keep the reply. This is not legal advice, so check your local consumer rules.

Can I downgrade mid-cycle?

Higgsfield's Terms say downgrades take effect in the next term and may lose content. Export what you need first. If you want a lower tier, set a reminder three days before renewal.

Do free generations count as usage?

The help center says using free or unlimited generations does not count as credit use for the refund rule. Credits do count. Check the cost on the Generate button before you click, and see how to spend credits wisely.

Are failed generations charged?

Failed generations usually have their credits returned automatically within minutes, according to the help center, though some models may not. Check your usage log after a failure and screenshot it for support.

What if I was charged after I cancelled?

Check the date against the renewal first. Then write to support with your cancellation confirmation, and if there is no fair reply, ask your card issuer about a chargeback as a last resort. Keep screenshots of the terms and the pricing page from the day you bought.
