Jotform alternatives: the best form builders to switch to

By Ranjit Bhinge, founder of Blur Studio · Updated · 6 min read

Short answer: The main Jotform alternatives are Typeform, Tally, Fillout and Cognito Forms. Tally has the most generous free plan. Fillout gives 1,000 free responses a month and low paid plans. Typeform suits brands that want polished, conversational forms. Cognito Forms suits businesses that need calculations and payments in their forms.

You want to know what Jotform and its real alternatives actually cost at your submission volume, not just the headline price.

I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.

Why do people look for a Jotform alternative?

Jotform is a strong product, so the reasons are mostly about fit and price. Here is what Jotform's own pages show.

  • Free plan branding: The free Starter plan adds Jotform branding to your forms and signed documents.
  • Limits rise by plan: Jotform caps the number of forms, monthly submissions, form views and storage on each plan. You move up a plan to raise them.
  • Paid plans start at $19 a month: The paid plans are Bronze, Silver and Gold, plus Enterprise.
  • HIPAA on top plans only: HIPAA is the US law that protects health data. Jotform's HIPAA features are only on Gold and Enterprise. A clinic that needs them must pay for one of those plans.

Jotform also does far more than forms. Its home page lists over 20,000 templates, e-signatures with Jotform Sign, PDF tools, payments, no-code apps and AI agents. If you only need simple forms, you may be paying for features you never use.

On the plus side, Jotform gives a 50% discount on Bronze, Silver and Gold to nonprofits and schools. Check that before you switch.

One correction worth flagging: Jotform's paid plans actually start at $39 a month for Bronze (billed monthly, $34 on a yearly plan), not the lower figure some comparison pages still quote, as of October 2026. Bronze gives you 25 forms and 1,000 monthly submissions, Silver moves to $49 ($39 yearly) for 50 forms and 2,500 submissions, and Gold jumps to $129 ($99 yearly) for 100 forms and 10,000 submissions. Check the current price on Jotform's own page before you budget, since this tier structure has moved before.

What are the best Jotform alternatives?

Each of these suits a different need. The price shown is the lowest paid plan on the vendor's page.

Blur Studio (best value)

A ready-built, well-tested core with a different pricing model: no per-seat fees, and it covers almost all the features you'd actually need, usually working out to the best value for money. On top of that, Blur Studio builds owned customizations, meaning you can ask for it to be modified to your exact specifications, and you own those modifications outright. • Best for: Businesses that need software that works without barriers, no unnecessary fees and options to customize it to their needs.

Typeform

Typeform is known for polished forms that feel like a conversation. Its AI can add follow-up questions that change based on each answer. Its pricing page lists Basic at $39 a month, or $28 a month on a yearly plan, for 100 responses a month and 1 seat. Plus is listed at $79 a month, or $56 yearly, for 1,000 responses and 3 seats. HIPAA compliance is on the Enterprise plan only. Typeform also has a free plan.

  • Best for: Brands that care about how their forms look and feel, such as for lead forms and surveys.

Tally

Tally works like a text document. You type your questions on the page and add blocks, much like in Notion. Its free plan has unlimited forms and unlimited submissions, within Tally's fair use rules. Pro costs $24 a month and Business costs $74 a month on monthly billing. Tally says yearly billing gives you 2 months off. Pro removes the 10 MB size limit on file uploads.

  • Best for: Small businesses and solo owners who want a strong free plan.

Fillout

Fillout's free plan includes unlimited forms, unlimited seats and 1,000 responses a month. Starter costs $15 a month, or $180 billed yearly, for 2,000 responses. Pro costs $40 a month for 5,000 responses. Business costs $75 a month with unlimited responses. If you go over your limit, Fillout says your forms still collect responses.

  • Best for: Teams that need many people to edit forms and want low, clear pricing.

Cognito Forms

Cognito Forms builds forms with automatic calculations, payments and approvals. It also has templates for online order forms. The free Individual plan includes 100 entries a month for 1 user. Pro costs $19 a month on a yearly plan, or $24 monthly, for 2,000 entries a month. HIPAA compliance is on the Enterprise plan.

  • Best for: Businesses that need calculations, order forms or quotes inside a form.

If you collect health data, only use a plan where the vendor states HIPAA support, and ask for a signed business associate agreement. HHS, the US health department, says the HIPAA rules generally require this contract between a clinic and a vendor that handles patient data.

Typeform vs Jotform: which is better?

They are built for different jobs.

  • Choose Typeform if: Your form is part of your brand, such as a lead form on your website or a customer survey. Typeform focuses on a smooth, conversational feel and AI follow-up questions.
  • Choose Jotform if: You need working business forms with lots of options. That includes payments, e-signatures, PDFs from submissions, and HIPAA forms on Gold. Jotform's 20,000+ templates also help you start fast.

On price, Typeform's Basic plan allows 100 responses a month. Compare that with Jotform's limits for your real monthly volume before you choose.

When does a custom form or portal make more sense?

For most businesses, a form builder is the right buy. It is cheap and quick. A custom build is worth a look in these cases.

  • The form is really a process: For example, a client fills in a form, uploads files, signs, pays, and then your team reviews it in steps. A client onboarding system or client portal handles that better.
  • Data must flow into your own systems: You re-type form answers into your CRM, job software or accounting tool. Tools like Zapier can help first, as my Zapier vs Make guide explains.
  • You need quotes from answers: A form that builds a priced quote is often better as a small quote generator.
  • You collect sensitive data at scale: You want full control of where data is stored and who can see it.

How would Blur Studio handle a forms project?

I first check whether a better form setup would do the job. Often it will. When it won't, I build the form as part of a small app that your staff use, linked to your CRM or job system. I can add AI to read uploaded documents and fill in the record, so your team only checks it. My guide to AI document processing shows how that works. You keep the app, its code and the accounts it runs on.

Need something completely custom?

Everything above is a path to get it running quick and cheap. But sometimes the honest answer is that none of those quite fit, and what you actually need is something custom that you own, built uniquely for your business from the ground up, with AI thoughtfully designed into the parts of it that your processes actually benefit from. An asset that grows in value, not a generic, one-size-fits-all boilerplate that's an expense with a lock-in. This is a complete bespoke build, and it's something I do very well. Is my project too small for this?

No. Most of the owners I work with have no tech team at all, that is the whole point. If the smarter move is a cheap software subscription instead of custom software, I will tell you that on the first call, even though it means I do not get paid.
