Hiring a machine learning development company for forecasts, scoring and image checks
Short answer: A machine learning development company builds models that learn from your past data to make predictions, such as next month's demand, which leads will buy or which photos show a defect. This differs from chat-style AI, which writes text. Clutch's 2026 data shows most AI projects cost $10,000 to $49,999. You need clean history for the thing you want to predict before a custom model is worth it.
You need a real prediction or classification system.
I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.
What does a machine learning development company do?
Machine learning (ML) means training software, called a model, on past data so it can make predictions. Google's guide gives a simple example. A model can learn weather patterns from years of data and then predict rain from today's conditions.
A machine learning development company does the full job around that model.
- Finds the right question: It turns a business problem into something a model can predict.
- Prepares your data: It pulls records from your systems and fixes gaps and errors.
- Builds and tests the model: It trains the model on old data and checks it on data the model has not seen.
- Puts it to work: It connects the predictions to the tools your staff already use.
- Watches it over time: It checks that the predictions stay accurate as your business changes.
How is machine learning different from chat-style AI?
Both are types of AI, but they do different jobs. Google describes generative AI as models that create content from what a user types in, such as text, images or summaries. Predictive ML gives you a number or a label.
Google splits predictive models into two common types. A regression model predicts a number, such as a price or an arrival time. A classification model predicts a group, such as spam or not spam, or whether a photo shows a cat.
| Question | Chat-style AI app | Predictive machine learning |
|---|---|---|
| What it gives you | Written answers, drafts and summaries | A number, a score or a label |
| Typical use | Answer customer questions, draft emails | Forecast sales, score leads, spot defects |
| Data it needs | Your documents and help articles | Many past examples with known results |
| How you check it | People read the answers | You compare predictions with what really happened |
| Usual starting point | A ready-made model from OpenAI, Anthropic or Google | Your own records |

What can machine learning do for a small or mid-sized business?
Here are concrete uses, grouped by the type of prediction.
Demand forecasts
- Stock planning: A distributor predicts how many units of each product it will sell next month, so it orders the right amount. My guide to inventory management systems covers where this fits.
- Staff planning: A restaurant group or clinic predicts busy days, so it books the right number of staff.
- Cash planning: A firm predicts when invoices will really be paid, so it knows its cash position weeks ahead.
Scoring
- Lead scoring: The model ranks new enquiries by how likely they are to buy, so sales staff call the best ones first.
- Churn risk: A subscription business flags customers who show the signs of leaving, so the team can reach out in time.
- Fraud or error checks: The model flags orders, claims or invoices that look unusual for a person to review.
Image checks
- Quality control: A camera on a production line flags parts with scratches, dents or missing pieces.
- Photo review: A property or insurance team sorts damage photos by type, so the right person sees each one.
A computer vision development company focuses on this last group. Computer vision means software that reads images or video.
Do you have enough data for machine learning?
This question matters more than any other. A model learns from past examples where you already know the answer. For a sales forecast, you need sales history. For lead scoring, you need past leads marked as won or lost. For defect checks, you need photos marked as good or faulty.
Google's own rules of machine learning give advice that suits most small firms. Rule one says you should not be afraid to launch a product without machine learning. A simple rule can get you a good part of the way there. Rule two says to track your numbers first, so you have history to learn from later.
If your data is thin or messy, start by collecting it well.
Can you start with ready-made tools?
Yes, and you often should. Try these before you pay for a custom model.
- Excel Forecast Sheet: Microsoft Excel can build a forecast from a column of dates and a column of values. It adds a chart and a table of predicted values. Microsoft says the dates must have steady gaps, such as one per month.
- Amazon SageMaker Canvas: This AWS tool lets you build models without code. As of October 2026, AWS lists the workspace at $1.90 per hour while you are logged in. It also offers a two-month free tier of up to 160 hours a month. Model training costs extra.
- Google Cloud Vision: This service labels what appears in images using Google's ready-made models. As of October 2026, the first 1,000 units each month are free. Label detection then costs $1.50 per 1,000 units.
- Tools you already pay for: Many CRM, stock and accounting products include basic forecasts or scores. Check your current plan first.
If a ready-made tool gives useful predictions, you may never need a custom one.
When does a custom machine learning model make sense?
Custom machine learning models are worth building in a few cases.
- Your data is unusual: Ready-made models do not know your products, your parts or your customers.
- Accuracy is worth real money: A small gain in a forecast saves a lot of stock, staff time or waste.
- The prediction must sit inside your systems: Staff need the score inside your CRM or job screen, with no exporting.
- You need control: You must explain each prediction, keep data private or own the model.
- Spreadsheet rules got too complex: Google's rule three says to choose machine learning over a complex set of hand-written rules, because those are hard to keep up.
How much does machine learning development cost?
Clutch publishes price data drawn from verified reviews that clients leave for development firms. Its 2026 AI development pricing guide says most AI projects reviewed there cost $10,000 to $49,999. The average project was about $120,595, and the typical project took about 10 months. US firms on Clutch charge $50 to $99 an hour on average.
Running costs come on top. You pay for cloud computing to train and run the model, and for someone to check it. Google warns that a model can get worse slowly as the world changes, and nobody may notice for months. So budget for regular checks and retraining.
What rules apply when a model scores people?
Most forecasts about products or stock carry little legal risk. Scoring people is different.
- Colorado: The state's Automated Decision-Making Technology Act starts on January 1, 2027. It covers technology used to materially influence a consequential decision about a person. The Attorney General filed draft rules in August 2026 and set a public hearing for October 26, 2026. See my Colorado guide for more.
- New York City: Local Law 144 bars employers from using an automated hiring tool unless it had a bias audit within the past year. Employers must also post a summary of the results and give candidates notice. Enforcement began on July 5, 2023.
- Truthful claims: The Federal Trade Commission said in 2024 that "there is no AI exemption from the laws on the books." If you sell a product that uses your model, your claims about it must be true.
If your model will help decide on jobs, loans, housing, insurance or health care, ask a lawyer before you build.
How do you choose a machine learning development company?
Ask each company to show a model that a business uses today, and how they measured whether it worked. Then put these questions to every team.
- What data will you need from us, and how much history?
- How will you test the model on data it has not seen?
- What simple method will you compare the model against?
- How will my staff see and use the predictions?
- How will you spot when the model gets worse?
- Who owns the model, the code and the data?
Red flags
Be careful with a team that promises a set accuracy before it has seen your data. Also be careful if it cannot explain its results in plain words, or skips the test on unseen data. Question any team that pushes a custom model when a spreadsheet forecast would do.
How does Blur Studio approach machine learning work?
I start with the decision you want to make better, such as how much stock to order. Then I look at the data you already have and test a simple method first. If a simple method or a ready-made tool does the job, I will tell you. When a custom model is worth it, I build it, connect it to the tools your staff use and keep checking it after launch. The code, the model and the accounts belong to your business. To see how this fits a wider AI plan, read my guide to AI implementation.
Questions people ask
What does a machine learning development company do?
It builds models that learn from your past data to make predictions, such as demand forecasts, lead scores or image checks. It also prepares the data, connects the model to your tools and keeps it accurate.
How is machine learning different from ChatGPT-style AI?
Chat-style AI creates text, images or summaries from what a user types. Predictive machine learning learns from your own past records and gives a number, a score or a label.
How much does machine learning development cost?
Clutch's 2026 guide says most AI projects reviewed there cost $10,000 to $49,999, with an average of about $120,595. Cloud computing and regular checks add running costs.
How much data do I need for machine learning?
You need many past examples where you already know the result, such as sales history or leads marked as won or lost. If you do not have that yet, start by tracking your numbers well.
What is a computer vision development company?
It builds software that reads images or video, such as tools that spot defects on a production line or sort damage photos. Ready-made services like Google Cloud Vision can handle simple image labels before you pay for a custom model.
How much data do I need before a custom machine learning model is worth building?
It depends on the problem, but a common pattern is at least a year of consistent historical data for anything seasonal, like demand forecasting. If you do not have that yet, a simpler rule-based method can often get you most of the value while you build up the history a real model would need.
Roughly what does this cost?
As a broad reference, fixes and finishes start at around $1,500, and new builds start higher, always a fixed price agreed in writing before I start, never an hourly rate. My AI app cost guide explains what actually drives a quote up or down.
Is my project too small for this?
No. Most of the owners I work with have no tech team at all, that is the whole point. If the smarter move is a cheap software subscription instead of custom software, I will tell you that on the first call, even though it means I do not get paid.
