Zendesk alternatives: what to switch to and what it costs
Short answer: The main Zendesk alternatives are Freshdesk, Help Scout, Intercom, HubSpot Service Hub and Zoho Desk. Freshdesk is the closest match on price and features. Help Scout suits small teams that want a simple shared inbox. Intercom suits teams that want an AI agent to answer most chats first. Zendesk's own Suite Professional plan costs $115 per agent a month billed yearly, as of October 2026.
You want to know what a Zendesk alternative actually saves once per-agent fees and AI resolution costs are both counted.
I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.
Why do people look for a Zendesk alternative?
Most of the reasons come down to cost as a team grows. Zendesk charges per agent, so every new support person adds to the bill. Here is what its pricing page shows.
- Plan prices: Support Team costs $19 per agent per month on a yearly plan, or $25 on a monthly plan. Suite Team costs $55 yearly or $69 monthly. Suite Professional costs $115 yearly or $149 monthly.
- Key features sit on higher plans: The basic Support Team plan covers email and tickets. Suite Team adds AI agents, a knowledge base, live chat and phone support. Skills-based routing and a phone menu start on Suite Professional.
- AI is billed by use: Zendesk counts each chat its AI solves on its own as an "automated resolution". Support Team and Suite Team include 5 per agent each month, and Suite Professional includes 10. After that, each one costs $1.50 if you commit ahead, or $2.00 if you pay as you go.
- Add-ons cost extra: Copilot, the AI helper for agents, costs $50 per agent per month on a yearly plan.
So a team of 10 agents on Suite Professional pays $1,150 a month on a yearly plan, before any add-ons or extra AI use. For a large team that needs all of it, that can be fair value. For a small team that mostly answers email, it can be more than they need.
What are the best Zendesk alternatives?
These tools cover most needs. Each price below is the lowest paid plan the vendor lists.
Blur Studio (best value)
A ready-built, well-tested core with a different pricing model: no per-seat fees, and it covers almost all the features you'd actually need, usually working out to the best value for money. On top of that, Blur Studio builds owned customizations, meaning you can ask for it to be modified to your exact specifications, and you own those modifications outright. - Best for: Businesses that need software that works without barriers, no unnecessary fees and options to customize it to their needs.
Freshdesk
Freshdesk is the closest like-for-like swap. Its Growth plan costs $19 per agent per month, billed yearly. Pro costs $55 and Enterprise costs $89. Every plan includes Freddy, its AI agent, with the first 500 AI sessions included. More sessions cost $49 per 100. Freshdesk does not list a free plan, but it offers a 14-day trial of its top plan.
- Best for: Teams that want Zendesk-style ticketing with a lower top-tier price.
Help Scout
Help Scout works like a shared email inbox. It has a free plan for up to 5 users, with 1 inbox and 100 contacts a month. Paid plans start at $25 per user per month for Standard, then $45 for Plus and $75 for Pro. Its AI agent, called AI Answers, costs $0.75 for each chat it solves on its own. You can set a monthly cap on that spend.
- Best for: Small teams that want simple email and chat support with low AI costs.
Intercom
Intercom is built around chat and its AI agent, Fin. The Essential plan is listed at $19 per seat per month for new customers. Advanced is listed at $85 and Expert at $132. Fin starts at $0.99 per outcome. You can also run Fin on top of another help desk with no Intercom seats.
- Best for: Online businesses that want an AI agent to answer most questions first.
HubSpot Service Hub
HubSpot Service Hub is the help desk part of HubSpot's CRM. A CRM is a shared record of every customer and deal. It is free for up to 2 users. Starter is listed at $7 to $20 per seat per month, depending on how you pay. Professional is $90 to $100 per seat per month, plus a one-time $1,500 onboarding fee.
- Best for: Teams that already use HubSpot for sales or marketing. My guide to HubSpot alternatives covers that choice directly.
Zoho Desk
Zoho Desk has a free plan with 3 user licenses for basic email tickets. Its paid plans are Express, Standard, Professional and Enterprise. Zoho shows prices by region, so check the page for your country. Zia, Zoho's own AI, starts on the Professional plan. The cheaper plans let you plug in your own OpenAI or DeepSeek key for AI replies.
- Best for: Teams that already use other Zoho apps, or very small teams that want a free start.

Zendesk vs Freshdesk: which is better?
Zendesk and Freshdesk start at the same price. Both cost $19 per agent per month on a yearly plan, and both have a middle plan at $55. The gap opens at the top. Zendesk Suite Professional costs $115, while Freshdesk Enterprise costs $89.
AI costs work in different ways too. Zendesk gives each agent a few AI resolutions a month and charges for each extra one. Freshdesk includes 500 AI sessions on every plan and sells more in packs of 100. Freshdesk's agent helper, Freddy Copilot, costs $29 per agent per month on Pro and Enterprise. Zendesk Copilot costs $50 per agent per month on a yearly plan.
- Choose Zendesk if: You want phone, chat, email and a help center in one tool, and you plan to grow into features such as skills-based routing and a phone menu.
- Choose Freshdesk if: You want similar ticketing at a lower top-tier price, and you expect a lot of AI chats each month.
Zendesk vs Intercom: what is the difference?
Zendesk's entry plan is built around email and tickets. Intercom's plans are built around chat on websites and apps, and every plan includes its AI agent, Fin. Intercom's Advanced plan costs $85 per seat per month, and Zendesk Suite Professional costs $115.
- Choose Zendesk if: Most of your support comes through email and phone, and you want strong ticket routing.
- Choose Intercom if: Most of your support happens in chat, and you want AI to answer first and hand off to a person when needed.
What is a good Freshdesk alternative or Help Scout alternative?
If Freshdesk feels too big, Help Scout is the simpler choice. It keeps the look of an email inbox and has a free plan for 5 users. If Help Scout feels too small, Freshdesk or Zendesk add more routing, reports and channels. Intercom fits either group if chat is your main channel.
When does building your own help desk make sense?
For most small and mid-sized teams, one of the tools above is the right answer. Buy one, set it up well, and keep your money for your customers.
A custom tool can make sense in a few cases.
- Your tickets need data from your own systems: For example, an agent needs order history, warranty status and delivery tracking from three different tools on one screen.
- Seat costs keep climbing: You have dozens of agents, and per-agent fees plus AI fees now cost more each year than a tool you own.
- Your workflow is unusual: For example, a repair shop that turns each ticket into a quote, a part order and a booking.
- You need control of the data: Some businesses must keep customer records in a set place or under their own rules.
A middle path often works best. Keep your help desk, and add a custom AI customer service agent that reads your own data and answers from it. You can also build an AI knowledge base that feeds the help desk better answers.
How does Blur Studio help with support tools?
I start by looking at your tickets. What do people ask most? Which answers need data from other tools? How many agents do you have, and how fast is that number growing?
If a ready-made help desk fits, I tell you which one and help you set it up. If it does not, I build the missing part. That might be an AI agent that pulls order data into each reply, or a full support tool. Either way, the support tool and its accounts belong to your business. For a wider view of this choice, read my guide on build vs buy software.
Need something completely custom?
Everything above is a path to get it running quick and cheap. But sometimes the honest answer is that none of those quite fit, and what you actually need is something custom that you own, built uniquely for your business from the ground up, with AI thoughtfully designed into the parts of it that your processes actually benefit from. An asset that grows in value, not a generic, one-size-fits-all boilerplate that's an expense with a lock-in. This is a complete bespoke build, and it's something I do very well. Questions people ask
What is the cheapest Zendesk alternative?
Help Scout, HubSpot Service Hub and Zoho Desk all have free plans, as of October 2026. Help Scout's free plan allows 5 users, HubSpot's allows 2 and Zoho Desk's allows 3. They suit small teams with simple needs.
Is Freshdesk cheaper than Zendesk?
At the entry level, both cost $19 per agent per month on a yearly plan, as of October 2026. At the top listed tier, Freshdesk Enterprise costs $89 and Zendesk Suite Professional costs $115. So Freshdesk is cheaper for teams that need the advanced features.
Which Zendesk alternative has the best AI?
Each tool prices AI in its own way. Intercom's Fin starts at $0.99 per outcome, and Help Scout's AI Answers costs $0.75 per resolution, as of October 2026. Test each AI agent on your own past questions before you choose.
Can I move my tickets out of Zendesk?
Most help desks offer import tools or partners that move tickets, contacts and help center articles. Ask the new vendor what they move for you and what you must export yourself. Run a test import before you switch.
Should I build my own help desk?
Most teams should buy one. Building makes sense when you have many agents, an unusual workflow, or tickets that need data from several of your own systems.
Roughly what does this cost?
As a broad reference, fixes and finishes start at around $1,500, and new builds start higher, always a fixed price agreed in writing before I start, never an hourly rate. My AI app cost guide explains what actually drives a quote up or down.
Is my project too small for this?
No. Most of the owners I work with have no tech team at all, that is the whole point. If the smarter move is a cheap software subscription instead of custom software, I will tell you that on the first call, even though it means I do not get paid.
