How to find the right AI agency for your business
Short answer: An AI agency is a company that uses AI to do work for your business or builds AI tools for you. Most fall into three types: automation agencies that connect your apps so tasks run on their own, development agencies that build custom AI software, and marketing agencies that use AI to make and run campaigns. Pick the type that matches your problem, ask for live work you can test, and make sure you own what they build.
You're trying to work out what kind of AI agency you actually need, automation, development or marketing, before you waste a sales call on the wrong one.
I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.
What is an AI agency?
An AI agency is a company that uses AI to get work done for your business. Some set up AI tools inside your current apps. Some build new software. Some use AI to run your marketing.
Most small US businesses have not started yet. The US Census Bureau found that 19.8% of US businesses used AI as of May 3, 2026. Among firms with four or fewer workers, the share was under 20%. So if you feel behind, you are in the same spot as most owners.
What kinds of AI agency are there?
The name "AI agency" covers three quite different businesses. Read the short description of each and see which one sounds like your problem.
AI automation agency
An AI automation agency links the apps you already use so routine tasks happen on their own. A common example is a new web form that creates a contact in your CRM, writes a reply with AI and books a call. These agencies often work in tools like Zapier, Make or n8n. They also add AI steps, such as sorting emails or pulling details out of a PDF.
This suits you if your team copies data between apps all day. The limit is that you depend on those tools and their monthly fees. My guide to business process automation goes deeper on this.
AI development agency
An AI development agency builds software that you own. That might be a staff tool that answers questions from your files, a client portal with AI search, or an AI agent that handles a whole task. The team writes real code, sets up a database and connects an AI model.
This suits you when no product fits the way you work. It costs more at the start. In return, you get a tool that fits your process, and no per-seat fee grows as your team grows. See my guide on how to pick an AI development company.
AI marketing agency
An AI marketing agency uses AI to write copy, make images and video, plan content and run ads. It is still a marketing agency at heart. The AI helps it produce more work, faster.
Judge it like any marketing agency, on results and clear reports.
Which type fits which problem?
| Your problem | Agency type | What you usually get |
|---|---|---|
| Staff copy data between apps | Automation | Connected apps and AI steps inside them |
| No product fits how you work | Development | Custom software you own |
| You need more leads and content | Marketing | Campaigns, content and ads made with AI help |
| You do not know where AI fits yet | An adviser first | A short review and a plan |
If you are in the last row, read my guide on what an AI consultant does. A short paid review can save you from hiring the wrong type of agency.
Which kind of AI agency do you need?
Start with the task that wastes the most time or money. Write it down in one sentence. Then ask three questions.
- Does the task move data between apps you already pay for? An automation agency is probably enough.
- Does the task need screens, logins or data that no current tool holds? You need a development agency.
- Is the task about getting attention or customers? A marketing agency is the right fit.
Some agencies do two of these. Ask which type of work makes up most of their projects, since that is usually where they are strongest.
Should you buy a tool before you hire an agency?
Often, yes. Many simple jobs only need a good product and an afternoon of setup. Meeting notes, a basic website chat and simple email sorting all have ready-made tools.
Automation tools are also cheap to try. As of October 2026, Zapier has a free plan with 100 tasks a month, and its Professional plan starts from $19.99 a month. If you can set up the task yourself in a few hours, you may not need an agency at all.
Bring in an agency when the setup keeps breaking or your tools do not talk to each other. An agency also helps when the AI must handle your own data safely.
How much does an AI agency cost?
Price depends on the type of agency, the size of the job and the care after launch. Full systems vary too much for one honest figure.
Fiverr published its 2026 marketplace data in August 2026. It said hourly rates for AI experts on its platform mostly run from $40 to $200. A single AI integration averaged about $298 per project there. Monthly retainers for ongoing model work ran from $300 to $1,200.
Those figures describe small marketplace jobs. A custom AI tool that runs part of your business needs planning, testing and upkeep, so it costs more. For sourced ranges on bigger builds, read my guide to AI app development cost.
Also ask about running costs. Automation tools charge monthly, and AI models charge for use. Ask the agency to estimate both at your real volume.
How do you choose a good AI agency?
Use these checks for any type of agency.
- Live work you can test: Ask for two or three working examples. A demo video proves less than a link you can click.
- They ask about your numbers: A good agency asks how many leads, orders or tickets you handle before it suggests tools.
- They plan for mistakes: AI can give wrong answers with confidence. Ask how they test the output and where a person checks the work.
- You own the accounts: The tool accounts, the code and the AI provider account should be in your name.
- Clear support after launch: Apps change and AI models get updated. Ask who fixes things when a step breaks.
What should you ask an AI agency before you sign?
- Which task will this fix, and how will we measure it?
- Can I try work you built for a business like mine?
- Which tools and AI models will you use, and why?
- What will it cost each month to run at my volume?
- What happens when the AI gets something wrong?
- Whose name are the accounts and the code in?
- What does support cost after launch, and what does it cover?
What red flags should you watch for?
- Guaranteed income or results: In 2024 the FTC launched Operation AI Comply. It went after schemes that promised people fast income from "AI-powered" online stores. One of them, Ascend Ecom, is alleged to have taken at least $25 million from consumers. Be careful with any agency that guarantees results.
- AI-written fake reviews: In August 2024 the FTC announced a final rule against fake reviews and testimonials. It covers AI-generated reviews by people who do not exist. A marketing agency that offers to write reviews for you puts your business at risk.
- They keep the logins: If the agency owns the accounts, you lose the system when you leave.
- A price before they understand the job: A firm that quotes in the first ten minutes is guessing.
When is a custom AI build the better choice?
Many owners should stay with ready-made tools. A custom build makes sense in a few clear cases.
- Your workflow is unusual: Off-the-shelf tools force you to change how you work.
- Too many tools: Your data sits in five apps that do not connect well.
- Fees grow with your team: Per-seat or per-task fees cost more each year as you grow.
- Data you must control: Client, health or financial data may need to stay in systems you control.
- Deep links to your own systems: The AI needs to read and write to your own database or job software.
For tools that take actions on their own, see my guide to AI agent development.
How does Blur Studio work as an AI agency?
Blur Studio sits in the development group, but I also do the advising work upfront myself, so you are not paying two firms for the plan and the build. I work with business owners to understand what they actually need, then implement the AI automations, agents and workflows that meaningfully add operational value, and connect them to the tools you already use. I build AI receptionists, AI agents, client portals, CRMs and internal tools that the business owns. I also finish apps that were started in tools like Lovable, Bolt or Bubble and then got stuck. My first question is which task costs you the most time. If a product you can buy does that job, I will tell you to buy it. If it does not, I build a small first version, test it on your real examples and keep it running after launch. The logins, the AI provider account and the code are all set up under your business.
Questions people ask
What does an AI agency do?
An AI agency uses AI to do work for a business or builds AI tools for it. Some connect apps so tasks run on their own, some build custom software, and some use AI to run marketing.
What is the difference between an AI automation agency and an AI development agency?
An AI automation agency connects tools you already use, often with Zapier, Make or n8n, and adds AI steps. An AI development agency writes custom software that you own. Automation is faster to set up, while custom software fits unusual work better.
How much does an AI automation agency charge?
It depends on how many tasks you automate and the support you need. Fiverr's 2026 marketplace data showed small AI integration jobs averaging about $298 each, with monthly retainers from $300 to $1,200. Larger systems cost more.
Do small businesses need an AI agency?
Many do not. If a tool you can buy does the job and you can set it up yourself, start there. Hire an agency when the setup keeps breaking, your tools do not connect, or the AI must handle sensitive data.
How do I know if an AI agency is legitimate?
Ask for live work you can test and speak to past clients. Make sure you will own the accounts and the code. Walk away from any agency that guarantees income or offers to write fake reviews.
What is the difference between an AI automation agency and an AI development agency?
An automation agency mostly connects existing tools with no-code platforms like Zapier or Make. A development agency builds custom AI tools and agents from scratch when no combination of existing tools does the job well. Ask which one you're actually talking to, since the pitch can sound similar.
Roughly what does this cost?
As a broad reference, fixes and finishes start at around $1,500, and new builds start higher, always a fixed price agreed in writing before I start, never an hourly rate. My AI app cost guide explains what actually drives a quote up or down.
Is my project too small for this?
No. Most of the owners I work with have no tech team at all, that is the whole point. If the smarter move is a cheap software subscription instead of custom software, I will tell you that on the first call, even though it means I do not get paid.
