Hiring an AI agency in the UK: which type you need and how to choose

By Ranjit Bhinge, founder of Blur Studio · Updated · 6 min read

Short answer: A UK AI agency either connects AI to the tools you already use, builds custom AI software for you, or uses AI to run your marketing. Work out which of those your problem needs first. Then pick an agency that shows live work, signs a proper UK GDPR data processing contract, explains the monthly running costs and leaves the code and accounts in your name.

You're a UK firm narrowing down which type of AI agency fits, and you want the UK rules (GDPR, ICO) folded in.

I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.

How many UK businesses use AI now?

AI use in the UK has grown quickly. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) runs a regular business survey. In September 2026, 30% of UK businesses said they used at least one type of AI. When the ONS first asked in September 2023, the figure was 9%.

Small firms still lag a little. In the same survey, 29% of firms with fewer than 10 staff used AI, compared with 38% of firms with 10 or more.

A government study from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) shows why many firms hold back. In that study, 71% of businesses said a lack of clear need for AI held them back. Also, 60% said they had limited AI skills. A good agency should help with both problems.

What types of AI agency work with UK businesses?

Automation agencies

An automation agency connects the software you already pay for, such as Xero, HubSpot, Google Workspace or Microsoft 365. It then adds AI steps in between. A typical job reads incoming emails, pulls out order details and adds them to your system. These agencies often build in Zapier, Make or n8n.

Choose this type when your staff spend hours moving information between apps. You keep paying for each tool every month, so check those fees add up.

Development agencies

A development agency writes custom software with AI inside it. Examples include a staff assistant that answers questions from your policies, a booking system with an AI receptionist, or a portal that reads client documents. You own the result.

Choose this type when no product on the market fits your process. For the wider build side, read my guide to bespoke software development in the UK.

Marketing agencies that use AI

These agencies use AI to write, design and test content and adverts faster. Their real job is still marketing. Judge them on leads, sales and honest reporting.

Do you need an agency at all?

Many UK firms buy ready-made AI tools and do well. The DSIT study found that most businesses using AI for language tasks bought a ready-to-use system. For those tasks, 71% bought one, 14% built their own and 9% paid someone else to build it.

That is a sensible pattern. If a product does the job, buy it and set it up yourself. Bring in an agency when the product cannot reach your data, when it breaks your workflow, or when you need several tools joined together.

How much does an AI agency cost in the UK?

Agencies quote by the project, by the day or as a monthly retainer. Day rates give you a useful guide. IT Jobs Watch tracks UK contract adverts. In the six months to 18 October 2026, the median day rate for an AI engineer contract was £600.

An agency adds project management, testing and support on top of the engineering time. So expect its day rate to sit above a single contractor's rate. Always ask for a written estimate that splits the build, the monthly tool and AI fees, and the support after launch. My AI app development cost guide explains each of these costs.

What UK rules should your AI agency follow?

UK GDPR and the data processing contract

When an agency handles your customers' personal data, it usually acts as your "processor". UK GDPR then requires a written contract between you. The ICO lists what that contract must cover. It includes acting only on your written instructions, keeping data secure, getting your permission before using other suppliers, and deleting or returning the data at the end.

Ask every agency for its standard data processing agreement before you sign.

The Data (Use and Access) Act 2025

Most of the data protection changes in the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 came into force on 5 February 2026. They include a new framework for automated decision-making, which means decisions made by software without a person. If your AI tool makes decisions about people, such as approving an application, ask the agency how it handles this.

The ICO says its guidance on AI and data protection is under review because of the new Act. A good agency keeps up with those updates for you.

The regulator's new name

On 30 September 2026 the Information Commissioner's Office became the Information Commission. It still uses the name ICO, and its powers did not change. Its head office has moved from Wilmslow to Manchester. Check that your privacy notice shows the new address.

The EU AI Act

The EU AI Act can reach UK firms. It applies to providers outside the EU when the output of their AI system is used in the EU. Most of the Act started to apply on 2 August 2026. A change called the Digital Omnibus on AI came into force on 27 July 2026. It moved the rules for standalone high-risk systems to 2 December 2027. If you sell to EU customers, raise this with the agency early.

How do you pick a good UK AI agency?

  • Proof you can click: Ask for live tools they built and talk to one past client.
  • A small first project: Start with one task. A good agency will agree to prove value before a big build.
  • Clear data answers: They should name the AI provider, where data is stored and whether the provider trains on it.
  • Ownership in writing: The code, hosting and AI accounts should be registered to your business.
  • Support terms: Get the response times and the monthly cost in writing.

Which questions should you ask on the first call?

  1. What exact task will this improve, and how will we measure the result?
  2. Will you act as our processor, and can I see your data processing agreement?
  3. Where will our data be stored, and which AI provider will see it?
  4. What will the tool cost us each month to run?
  5. Who checks the AI's output before it reaches a customer?
  6. What happens to the system and our data if we stop working together?

What are the warning signs?

  • No written data contract: UK GDPR requires one with a processor. An agency that shrugs this off is a risk.
  • Promised results: No honest agency can promise that AI will double your sales.
  • Everything in their accounts: If they own the logins, you cannot leave easily.
  • Vague pricing: A single figure with no split between build, tools and support hides future costs.

When does a custom build make more sense in the UK?

Ready-made tools suit most simple jobs. A custom tool is worth it when your process is unusual or your data sits in many systems that do not connect. It also pays off when per-user fees climb as you hire. It also helps when sensitive client data must stay in systems you control, or when the AI must work deeply with your own database.

How does Blur Studio approach AI agency work?

Blur Studio sits in the development group, but I also do the advising work myself, one person covering both the plan and the build for UK firms. I work with business owners to understand what they actually need, then implement the AI automations, agents and workflows that meaningfully add operational value, such as AI receptionists, agents, portals and CRMs, and link them to the software you already run. I'm a one-person studio working remotely with business owners across the UK. I begin with one costly task. If an existing product solves it, I will say so. If not, I build a first version, test it with your real data and look after it once it is live. The code and the logins stay with your company.

Questions people ask

What does an AI agency do in the UK?

A UK AI agency helps a business use AI. It may connect AI to existing apps, build custom AI software, or use AI to produce marketing. The best agencies start with one clear task and measure the result.

How much does an AI agency cost in the UK?

Costs depend on the size of the job and the support you need. IT Jobs Watch put the UK median contract day rate for an AI engineer at £600 in the six months to 18 October 2026. Agencies usually charge more than one contractor because they add testing and support.

Does an AI agency need to follow UK GDPR?

It does. If the agency handles personal data for you, it normally acts as your processor. UK GDPR then requires a written contract that covers security, instructions and what happens to the data at the end.

Is the ICO still the UK data regulator?

The ICO is still the regulator. On 30 September 2026 it became the Information Commission, but it still uses the ICO name and keeps the same powers. Its head office is now in Manchester.

Should a small UK business hire an AI agency?

Only if a ready-made tool cannot do the job. Many small firms do well with products they set up themselves. An agency is worth it when your tools do not connect or your process needs custom software.

Does a UK AI agency need to be ICO registered?

If you process personal data as a data controller, you generally need to pay the ICO's data protection fee yourself, separate from whichever agency or developer you hire. Ask any agency whether the system they build gives you the records and logs you would need to show the ICO if asked.

Roughly what does this cost?

As a broad reference, fixes and finishes start at around $1,500, and new builds start higher, always a fixed price agreed in writing before I start, never an hourly rate. My AI app cost guide explains what actually drives a quote up or down.

Is my project too small for this?

No. Most of the owners I work with have no tech team at all, that is the whole point. If the smarter move is a cheap software subscription instead of custom software, I will tell you that on the first call, even though it means I do not get paid.
