How to hire an AI consultant in the UK without wasting your budget
Short answer: A UK AI consultant reviews how your business works, finds the tasks where AI will save time or money and gives you a plan that fits UK GDPR. In the six months to 23 October 2026, the median UK contract day rate for an AI consultant was £552, according to IT Jobs Watch. Start with a short, fixed project on one area of the business, check the consultant's IR35 status, and choose someone who will tell you when AI is the wrong answer.
You're trying to find a UK AI consultant worth the day rate.
I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.
What does an AI consultant do for a UK business?
An AI consultant studies how your business really runs. They speak to your staff, look at your tools and watch the tasks that eat up time. Then they tell you where AI can help and where it cannot.
A typical piece of work covers these steps.
- Map the work: List the repeated tasks in one part of the business, with the hours each one takes.
- Score the options: Rank AI uses by money saved, risk and how hard they are to set up.
- Check the data side: Note what personal data each use would touch and what UK GDPR needs.
- Plan the rollout: Name the tools, the costs, the people involved and how to measure success.
- Support the change: Help staff learn the new tools and review results after a few weeks.
Why are UK firms hiring AI consultants now?
More UK businesses use AI every year. The ONS reported that 30% of UK businesses used at least one type of AI in September 2026. Three years earlier, the figure was 9%.
Skills are the common gap. In a DSIT study of 3,500 UK firms, 60% said limited AI skills or knowledge held them back. A consultant fills that gap for a set period, so you do not need to hire a full-time specialist.
How much does an AI consultant cost in the UK?
Most UK AI consultants charge a day rate, a fixed project fee or a monthly retainer. Day rates are the easiest to compare.
IT Jobs Watch tracks UK contract job adverts. In the six months to 23 October 2026, the median day rate for an AI consultant contract was £552. That was 8% lower than a year before. The London median for the same role and period was also £552.
| Measure | Figure | Period |
|---|---|---|
| UK median day rate, AI consultant | £552 | 6 months to 23 Oct 2026 |
| Change on the year before | Down 8% | Same period |
| London median day rate, AI consultant | £552 | 6 months to 23 Oct 2026 |
These rates come from job adverts, so they show contractor pay. A consultancy firm usually charges more per day, because it adds its own overheads, project management and support. Always agree the number of days and the outputs in writing before work begins.
How should you hire a UK AI consultant: contractor or consultancy?
An independent contractor
Many AI consultants work through their own limited company. If so, the off-payroll working rules, often called IR35, may apply. HMRC says that, in most cases, the client is responsible for deciding the worker's employment status for tax. The client should give the reasons in a status determination statement.
There is one important exception. If you are a small business outside the public sector, the consultant's own company decides instead. HMRC has a free online tool, Check employment status for tax, that helps with the decision. If you are unsure, ask your accountant before the contract starts.
An AI consultancy
An AI consultancy is a firm with several people. You sign one business-to-business contract. You get a wider range of skills, and you are less exposed to one person leaving. You usually pay more per day.
Advisers and builders
Some consultancies only advise. Others also build the tools. An adviser suits you if you already have developers. A builder suits owners with no tech team, because one firm handles the plan and the build. With a builder, ask in writing which parts you could buy off the shelf instead.
Which UK data rules affect an AI consulting project?
UK GDPR contracts
If the consultant will handle your customers' or staff's personal data, they usually act as your processor. UK GDPR then requires a written contract. The ICO lists what it must include, such as security, working only on your instructions, and returning or deleting the data at the end.
Automated decisions
The Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 brought in a new framework for automated decision-making. That part came into force on 5 February 2026. It matters if your AI plan includes software making decisions about people without a person involved. Your consultant should flag those uses clearly.
The ICO says its AI and data protection guidance is under review because of the new Act. So ask your consultant which version of the guidance they are working from.
The regulator
The ICO became the Information Commission on 30 September 2026. It still goes by ICO, and its powers stayed the same. Its head office is now in Manchester.
What does a good first project look like?
Keep the first project small, fixed and useful. Pick one area, such as customer service, admin or sales. Set a short timescale and a fixed number of days.
At the end, you should receive:
- A ranked list of AI uses with the time or money each could save.
- Costs for each use, covering tool fees, AI usage and staff time.
- A UK GDPR note for each use, naming the personal data involved and any checks you need.
- One recommended next step, which could be a trial of a tool you can buy.
- A measure to track, such as hours saved each week or faster replies to customers.
You should own the plan and be free to take it to any builder.
How do you choose an AI consultant in the UK?
- Sector knowledge: A consultant who knows your trade will find better uses faster.
- Real examples: Ask for tools that clients use today, and speak to one of those clients.
- Honest limits: Ask when they last told a client not to use AI.
- Data knowledge: They should talk about UK GDPR and the ICO without you prompting them.
- No hidden tie-ins: Ask whether they receive fees from any tool they recommend.
Which red flags suggest a poor AI consultancy?
- A big plan with no first step: You need one action you can take next week.
- No mention of data protection: Any plan that uses customer data must cover UK GDPR.
- Vague outputs: "Strategy" alone is not something you can check. Ask for a list of documents and dates.
- Claims of guaranteed savings: Results depend on your data and your team. Nobody can promise them up front.
When does a custom AI tool make sense?
Often, the plan will point to a tool you can buy. That is a good result. A custom tool makes sense when your workflow is unusual or your data sits in systems that do not connect. It also helps when per-user fees keep rising or client data must stay under your control. My guide to bespoke software development in the UK explains that side in more detail.
How does Blur Studio approach AI consulting in the UK?
Blur Studio is both the adviser and the builder, in one place, so one person covers the plan and the build for UK firms. I'm a one-person studio working remotely with business owners across the UK, and I work with you to understand what the business actually needs, then implement the AI automations, agents and workflows that meaningfully add operational value, not just a report. I would start by mapping one area of your business and giving you a ranked list, as described above, with a UK GDPR note on each item. If a product solves the top item, I will tell you to buy that product. If not, I build the AI tool or workflow myself and look after it after launch. You keep the plan, the code and the accounts.
Questions people ask
How much does an AI consultant charge in the UK?
IT Jobs Watch reported a median UK contract day rate of £552 for AI consultants in the six months to 23 October 2026. Consultancy firms usually charge more per day because they add management and support.
Does IR35 apply when I hire an AI consultant?
It can, if the consultant works through their own limited company. Medium and large clients usually decide the consultant's status and give a status determination statement. For small private sector clients, the consultant's own company decides.
What is the difference between an AI consultant and an AI consultancy?
An AI consultant is usually one person working on their own. An AI consultancy is a firm with a team. A consultancy offers more skills and cover, while an independent consultant often costs less per day.
Do I need an AI consultancy in London?
You do not need one in your city. Most AI consulting works well by video call and shared screens. Pick the consultant with the right skills and sector knowledge, wherever they work.
What should a UK AI consultant deliver?
A good consultant delivers a ranked list of AI uses, the cost and risk of each, a UK GDPR note, and one clear next step. You should own the plan and be free to use any builder.
Does IR35 affect hiring an AI consultant in the UK?
It can, if the consultant works through their own limited company and the engagement looks like employment in practice. A genuine project-based engagement with a clear deliverable, like mine, is usually a more straightforward footing. Ask whoever you hire how they are set up and whether they have had this conversation before.
Roughly what does this cost?
As a broad reference, fixes and finishes start at around $1,500, and new builds start higher, always a fixed price agreed in writing before I start, never an hourly rate. My AI app cost guide explains what actually drives a quote up or down.
Is my project too small for this?
No. Most of the owners I work with have no tech team at all, that is the whole point. If the smarter move is a cheap software subscription instead of custom software, I will tell you that on the first call, even though it means I do not get paid.
