Can AI plan better routes for my crews?

By Ranjit Bhinge, founder of Blur Studio · Updated · 5 min read

Short answer: Yes, for the part of the job that is pure puzzle: putting a list of stops in the order that cuts driving time. Route optimization is software that takes your jobs for the day and your crews, and builds the order and assignment that waste the fewest miles. Jobber and Housecall Pro, two job management tools for home service businesses, both include it. Upper is a stand-alone route planner built mostly for delivery fleets. None of them knows that the customer on Oak Street never answers the door before ten, unless you tell it.

You are spending too much of the day in the truck and want to know whether AI can plan your crews' routes better than you do.

I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.

If you want to know whether routing or something else would save your business the most, the AI Strategy Sprint finds that in 3 days.

What route optimization actually is

Picture six jobs across a county and two trucks. There are hundreds of ways to order and split them. Finding the order with the least total driving is a classic puzzle in computing, and the math to solve it has existed for decades. Newer tools add machine learning, which here mostly means learning from past routes and live traffic to estimate drive times better. So "AI route optimization" is partly real improvement and partly a new label on an old method. That is fine. What matters is whether it saves you drive time, not what it is called.

For a service business, the puzzle has extra rules that a delivery fleet does not. Jobs have time windows ("between 8 and 10"). Some jobs need a certain skill or a certain tech. Some need two people. Emergency jobs show up mid-day. A tool that ignores these gives you a short route you cannot actually run.

What it plans well

  • The order of stops for a crew, so you drive in a sensible loop and not a zigzag.
  • Splitting a day's jobs across several crews, so the trucks cover separate areas and do not cross paths.
  • Re-planning when something changes. A cancellation or a new job gets slotted in without you redrawing the whole day.
  • Start and end points. Where each tech begins and ends the day, whether the shop or home.

The biggest wins show up for recurring work such as lawn care, pool service, pest control and cleaning, where the same set of customers repeats and the sequence can be tuned week after week. For one-off repair work with tight windows, the gain is smaller because the customer's time window, not the map, sets the order.

Which tools include it, and what they charge

All prices are in USD, as of November 2026, and billed annually unless stated. Check each vendor's page for the current figure.

ToolWhat it isRoutingPrice
JobberJob management for home service businessesBuilds daily routes for one person or a whole crew, plans multiple days, re-optimizes on changes, sends turn-by-turn directions to the phonePlans $29, $99 and $149 a month, one user each. Check Jobber's plan comparison to see which plans include route optimization
Housecall ProJob management for home service pros"Routes" groups and sequences jobs to cut the day's drive time, listed in its Essentials planEssentials $149 a month for 5 users ($189 on monthly billing)
ServiceM8Job management app for tradesLists Auto Routing as an add-on available in all plans, which optimizes a staff member's route and schedule for the day. Separate Urgent Dispatch shows staff proximity and availability so you send the nearest tech to an urgent jobPaid plans Starter $29 a month up to Premium Plus $349. Check ServiceM8's page for the Auto Routing price
UpperStand-alone route planning softwareRoute optimization, plus AI driver assignment and business rules on its Optimize plan$40, $48 and $71 per user per month on yearly billing (a 20 percent discount), or $50, $60 and $89 month to month

A few notes on that table. Jobber's route page lists the features but does not say which plan has them, so check the plan comparison before assuming yours does. Housecall Pro's Basic plan, at $59 a month for one user, does not list Routes, so a solo operator who wants it should read the plan details first. Its Max plan also lists a separate "Route optimization" item that reorders jobs by real drive time and live traffic. ServiceM8's Urgent Dispatch is a nearest-tech helper, while its Auto Routing add-on does the day's route. And Upper, though capable, is priced per user and aimed at delivery, with industry pages for foodservice, waste, fuel and similar, so a three-truck plumber will pay for features that are mostly beyond a service schedule. If you want a look at a similar delivery-focused tool, my Route4Me alternatives guide covers Route4Me, another route planning product.

For the comparison between job management tools themselves, see my guides to Jobber pricing and Housecall Pro pricing.

Dispatch is the daily decision of which tech goes to which job. Routing is the order and path once that is decided. In small shops they are done by the same person at 6:30 in the morning, so they blur together. A tool that does both lets you drag a job to a different tech and watch the routes redraw. Upper's newer AI dispatch product goes further, assigning jobs by rules with a confidence score on each assignment, per its pricing page. That is aimed at larger fleets.

A worked example (made-up numbers)

Imagine a pest control company with two techs and 14 stops in a day. These numbers are invented.

Hand-plannedOptimized
Total driving per day (both techs)9 hours7.5 hours
Fuel and vehicle cost at $0.70 per mile, 40 mph averageabout $252about $210
Extra stops that fit in the same day01 or 2

The saving is about 1.5 hours and $42 a day. Over 22 working days that is roughly $900 a month in vehicle cost, plus the revenue from one extra job on some days. Your numbers will differ. The way to find yours is to take last Tuesday's route, run the same jobs through a free trial, and compare drive time. Do not trust any vendor's headline percentage until you have done that.

Where it stops

  • It does not know your customers. The gate code, the dog, the owner who wants the senior tech: none of that is in the map.
  • It trusts your data. A wrong address or a bad time window gives a confident wrong route.
  • It cannot see tomorrow's emergency. Leave slack in the day.
  • Techs may ignore it. A route that skips the lunch spot or the supply house will get quietly overridden. Ask the crew before you roll it out.

How I'd approach this

If you already use Jobber or Housecall Pro, switch on the routing in your plan and test it for two weeks. Do not buy a separate routing tool first. For one or two trucks, the savings are modest and the tool in your current software is usually enough.

Look at a stand-alone planner only if you run recurring routes with many stops, five or more vehicles, or rules your job management tool cannot express. And before any of it, measure your current drive time for a week. Without that number you cannot tell whether the tool helped.

Questions people ask

What is AI route optimization?

It is software that orders your stops and splits them between vehicles to cut driving time, often using live traffic and past trip data. Much of the core math is old; the AI part mainly improves time estimates and re-planning.

Does Jobber have route optimization?

Yes. Jobber's route optimization page describes routes for one person or a whole crew, multi-day planning, set start and end points, and push notifications with directions. Check its pricing and plan comparison for which plan includes it.

Does Housecall Pro have route planning?

Yes. Housecall Pro lists Routes, which groups and sequences jobs to cut drive time, in its Essentials plan at $149 a month on annual billing as of November 2026. See my Housecall Pro pricing guide.

What does Upper cost?

Upper's pricing page showed $40, $48 and $71 per user per month for Starter, Professional and Optimize on yearly billing as of November 2026, which is 20 percent off the monthly prices of $50, $60 and $89, plus an Enterprise tier by quote. Its AI driver assignment is on the Optimize plan.

How much can route optimization save?

It depends on how scattered your jobs are. Recurring work in a tight area saves the most. Measure your own drive time for a week, then repeat on the tool's trial before believing any headline figure.
