What can you do with the Housecall Pro API?
Short answer: Housecall Pro has a public REST API, but only on the Max plan, which is $299 a month billed yearly as of October 2026. An admin creates a key under My Apps, choosing full access or read-only, and gives it to a developer. The API can read and create customers, jobs, estimates and leads, update schedules and line items, and read invoices, and webhooks can push events like "job completed" or "invoice paid" to another system the moment they happen. On Essentials, Zapier and CSV exports are the lighter alternatives; on Basic, exports are all you get.
You want to know whether Housecall Pro's API can do the specific thing you have in mind, a dashboard, a link to another tool or an automated lead flow, and whether it's worth moving to Max to get it.
I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.
An API is a controlled door that lets other software read and write data in your Housecall Pro account. If you want a custom dashboard, a connection to a tool Housecall Pro doesn't integrate with, or leads that drop straight into your job inbox from your website, a developer builds it through that door.
This page covers who gets access, how to switch it on, what the API can and can't actually do (from Housecall Pro's own developer documentation), and what to use instead if you're not on Max.
Does Housecall Pro have an API?
Yes, on one plan. Housecall Pro's help center states it plainly: the API "is available only to Pros on a MAX plan." The pricing page lists open API access under Max and nowhere else. The developer documentation lives at docs.housecallpro.com.
Two things the help center is equally direct about. First, Housecall Pro won't build your integration or support it: it says it isn't able to provide dedicated support on API requests and "cannot build or maintain custom integrations created via API keys." You need your own developer. Second, it notes that "not every feature is available to build an integration," so check that the specific data you need is exposed before you pay for anything.
How much does Housecall Pro API access cost?
There's no separate API fee. You pay for Max: $299 a month billed yearly, or $329 monthly, with 8 users included and $35 a month for each extra user. Essentials is $149 a month on yearly billing, so moving up for the API costs about $150 a month, or $1,800 a year, before anything is built.
Max also brings route optimization, recurring service plans, a sales proposal tool and escalated support. If you'd use those anyway, the API is close to free. If the API is the only reason, weigh that $1,800 a year against the alternatives further down. My Housecall Pro pricing guide has the full plan breakdown.
How do you get a Housecall Pro API key?
From Housecall Pro's help center, as of October 2026. You must be on Max and signed in as an admin.
- Go to My Apps, then All Apps.
- Find API Key Management (scroll or use the search bar) and open it.
- Click Generate API Key.
- Name the key, and choose its permissions: Full access or Read-only.
- Click Generate key, copy it and send it to your developer through a secure channel.
The read-only option matters more than most owners realise. A dashboard or a weekly report only needs to read data, so give it a read-only key. Save full-access keys for integrations that genuinely need to create jobs or update records.
Three rules from the same help article: only admins can generate or delete keys, so office staff can't; a key can expose sensitive account data, which the help center compares to "giving them a backdoor" to your account; and deleting a key immediately breaks any integration using it. My own habit is one key per project, named after the project and the developer, so you can revoke one without breaking the others.
Developers send the key in a request header (Authorization: Token ...) to https://api.housecallpro.com. OAuth is also supported, but the docs say it's only for official integration partners. A single business uses API keys.
What can the Housecall Pro API actually do?
This is the part most articles skip. Here is what Housecall Pro's v1 API reference lists, grouped by what it lets a developer do:
| Area | Read | Create or change |
|---|---|---|
| Customers and addresses | Yes | Create and update customers, add addresses |
| Jobs | Yes, including line items and materials | Create jobs, add or edit line items, update or remove the schedule, dispatch to employees, add notes, tags, attachments and links, lock jobs |
| Appointments | Yes | Create, update and delete |
| Estimates | Yes | Create estimates and options, update line items and schedules, approve or decline options |
| Leads | Yes | Create leads, convert a lead to an estimate or job |
| Invoices | Yes, plus a preview | No |
| Employees | Yes | No |
| Price book | Services, materials, categories and price forms | Materials, material categories and price forms |
| Setup data | Job types, lead sources, tags, service zones, routes, pipeline statuses, schedule and booking windows, checklists, company info | Job types, lead sources, tags, pipeline status, schedule windows |
| Events and webhooks | Event history | Create or delete webhook subscriptions |
What that means in plain terms: the API is strong on getting work into Housecall Pro (customers, leads, jobs, estimates, schedules) and on reading everything back out. It is read-only on invoices and employees, and I found no endpoint for recording a payment. So a developer can read every invoice for a dashboard or an accounting link, but can't create or mark invoices paid from outside.
Housecall Pro also maintains a changelog and keeps adding fields. In August 2026, for example, it added local-time scheduling fields to jobs and estimates, and recurrence and route details to jobs. For a business with several locations, one key on the parent account can read data across all of the locations beneath it.
What are Housecall Pro webhooks?
Webhooks are the other half of the API. Instead of your system asking Housecall Pro "anything new?" every few minutes, Housecall Pro sends a message to your system the moment something happens. They are also Max only.
An admin turns them on under My Apps, All Apps, Webhooks, enters the address that should receive events, and picks which events to send. Housecall Pro returns a signing secret so your developer can verify each message really came from Housecall Pro. Available events include:
- Customers: created, updated, deleted.
- Jobs: created, scheduled, rescheduled, on my way, started, completed, paid, canceled, deleted, plus technicians assigned or unassigned.
- Estimates: created, sent, scheduled, completed, option approved or declined, copied to a job.
- Invoices: created, sent, paid, payment succeeded or failed, refunded, voided, canceled.
- Leads: created, updated, converted, lost, deleted.
Most useful integrations are built on these: a job completes, so a review request goes out; an invoice is paid, so the accounting system updates; an estimate option is approved, so the office gets a text.
What can you build with the Housecall Pro API?
- An owner dashboard: revenue, job counts, open invoices and technician results on one page, joined with numbers Housecall Pro doesn't hold, such as ad spend or overhead. My Housecall Pro reporting guide covers what the built-in reports already show, so you only build the gap.
- Lead intake from anywhere: Housecall Pro's API Leads feature (Max only) drops leads created through the API into a dedicated API Leads channel in your Job inbox, ready to schedule. Website forms, call tracking or an AI receptionist can all feed it.
- An accounting link Housecall Pro doesn't offer: Xero isn't on Housecall Pro's integrations page. Invoice and payment webhooks plus invoice reads are enough to keep another accounting system in step.
- Customer updates: a branded message or review request when a job completes, sent from your own system.
- A weekly owner email: jobs, revenue and overdue balances, sent every Monday without anyone pulling a report.
- AI workflows: an assistant that reads a customer's job history and drafts a follow-up, or answers "when was my last service?" from real data.
What are the options if you're not on Max?
Zapier (Essentials and Max)
Housecall Pro's help center says its Zapier integration is available on Essentials and Max, not Basic. It's limited, though: two triggers (Job Scheduled and Job Finished) and one action (Create New Customer). That covers simple jobs like copying each scheduled job into a Google Sheet or adding new customers from a web form. Using webhooks through Zapier needs Max and a paid Zapier plan. My Zapier vs Make page compares the two tools.
CSV and Excel exports (every plan)
- Customers and jobs: admins open Customers or Jobs, click Actions, then Export, confirm the email address and click Send file. A CSV arrives by email.
- Filtered customer lists: filter and choose columns on the Customers page, then Actions and Export.
- Reports: most reports and drill-down tables have an Export button, and the exported report includes line items, labor, materials, payments, card fees and balance due.
An export is a snapshot that's out of date the next day. That's fine for a monthly review. It's the wrong tool for anything you want to see every week without effort, which is usually the point at which an API makes sense.
Built-in integrations
Housecall Pro's integrations page lists around 30 apps, including QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop, Gusto, CallRail, CompanyCam, Mailchimp, Podium, Angi, Thumbtack, Yelp and Google Local Services. Check there first, because a ready-made connection beats a custom one when it does what you need. The Housecall Pro integrations guide explains what each connection actually does.
Should you buy Max for the API?
Buy Max if you'd use its other features anyway and you have a specific project in mind. Hold off if you don't have a project yet: a key nobody uses is $1,800 a year for nothing. A good test is to write down the one thing you want to happen automatically, then check it against the table above. If it needs creating invoices or recording payments from outside Housecall Pro, the API won't do it. If it's reading data, creating jobs or leads, or reacting to events, it will.
The 14-day free trial includes Max, so a developer can test the exact calls you need with a trial account before you commit.
How I'd approach this
I'd start with the specific outcome you want, not the API. If it's a weekly number or a monthly review, I'd usually build it from exports or Zapier on the plan you already have and save you the Max upgrade. If it needs to update itself, react to events, or pull leads in from other systems, I'd work with your admin to create a named, read-only key wherever reading is enough, and build the dashboard, lead flow or accounting link on top of the Housecall Pro account your crew already uses. Nothing about how your crew works changes, the integration runs in accounts you own, and you keep the code. If what you want needs something the API doesn't expose, like recording payments from outside, I'll tell you before you spend anything on Max.
Questions people ask
Is the Housecall Pro API free?
There's no separate API fee, but it's only on the Max plan, which is $299 a month billed yearly or $329 monthly as of October 2026.
Where is the Housecall Pro API documentation?
At docs.housecallpro.com. It covers authentication, webhooks, the price book API, multi-location access and the full v1 endpoint reference, plus a changelog.
Who can create a Housecall Pro API key?
Only admin users on the Max plan, under My Apps, All Apps, API Key Management. Each key can be full access or read-only.
Can the Housecall Pro API create invoices or record payments?
Not according to the v1 API reference I checked in October 2026. Invoices are read-only, and there's no payment endpoint. It can create and update customers, jobs, estimates, appointments and leads.
Does Housecall Pro have webhooks?
Yes, on the Max plan. They cover customer, job, appointment, estimate, invoice and lead events, such as job completed, invoice paid or estimate option approved, and each message is signed so your system can verify it.
Can Zapier replace the Housecall Pro API?
For simple tasks, yes. Zapier works on Essentials and Max with two triggers (job scheduled, job finished) and one action (create customer). For dashboards across all your data, or anything event-driven beyond those, you need the API or regular exports.
Does Housecall Pro connect to Xero?
Xero isn't on Housecall Pro's integrations page. On Max, a developer can build the link with the API and webhooks; otherwise, exports are the fallback.
