Is the Jobber AI receptionist worth it, or is there a better option?

By Ranjit Bhinge, founder of Blur Studio · Updated · 5 min read

Short answer: Jobber Receptionist is a phone and text answering add-on, run by Jobber's AI, for the Jobber app that home service businesses use for quotes, scheduling and invoices. As of November 2026 it costs $29 a month for 30 conversations, then $0.79 for each one after that, and it is included without a limit on Jobber's Plus plan. It is worth trying if you already use Jobber and mostly lose calls while you are on a job. It is a weaker fit if your callers need complicated answers or you want it to work with tools outside Jobber.

You already run your jobs in Jobber, you are missing calls while you work, and you want to know if its own AI receptionist is enough or if something else does more.

I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.

If you want to find where AI would pay off in your own business before buying any add-on, the AI Strategy Sprint finds it in 3 days.

An AI receptionist is software that answers your phone or texts, talks to the caller in plain speech, and takes an action: it books a visit, logs a request, or takes a message. Jobber added one inside its own app and calls it Receptionist. Because it sits inside your Jobber account, it can see your services, your booking settings and your client list.

That is its main strength and its main limit. Below I cover the cost, what it does on a call, what it cannot do, and the other routes.

What does the Jobber AI Receptionist cost?

Jobber lists Receptionist as an add-on at $29 a month on its pricing page, as of November 2026. Jobber's help center says the add-on is available on select plans and includes 30 conversations per billing cycle. Each extra conversation is $0.79. It is included on the Plus plan, with unlimited use.

You also need a Jobber dedicated phone number, even if you keep your current number and forward calls to it. Those numbers are available in the US, Canada and the UK, so check yours is covered, and look in your account for what the number itself costs.

What counts as a conversation. A call counts when the AI actually talks with the caller. Spam and calls with no real exchange do not. A text conversation starts when the AI first replies and stays open for 24 hours, so a back and forth over an afternoon is one conversation.

Worked example, with made-up numbers.

Conversations in a monthMathMonthly add-on cost
25Inside the 30 included$29.00
60$29 plus 30 extra at $0.79 ($23.70)$52.70
120$29 plus 90 extra at $0.79 ($71.10)$100.10

You can choose what happens at the limit: keep going and pay the overage, or pause. If paused, Receptionist stops answering and only takes a message. Jobber emails the account admin at 75 percent and 100 percent of the limit.

What does it do on a call?

Jobber's feature page and help article list these abilities:

  • Answer calls and texts around the clock, and handle several at once.
  • Answer questions about your business from your company profile, services, policies and the FAQ on your Jobber website.
  • Book a visit using your existing online booking settings, or create a work request for you to review.
  • Take a message and create a follow-up task in your Jobber schedule.
  • Reschedule or cancel an appointment when you allow it.
  • Text back a caller who hangs up.
  • Pass the call or send you a text alert when it hears keywords you choose, such as burst pipe or no heat.
  • Keep a log of each conversation with a summary, transcript and recording.

You can set different greetings for business hours and after hours, and recognize known clients by their phone number.

You can try it before you buy. Jobber lists demo lines at 737-388-0043 in the US and 587-209-4367 in Canada. Call it twice: the second call should recognize you.

Where it falls short

  • It knows only what Jobber knows. Its answers come from your Jobber profile and booking rules. If your pricing, coverage area or service rules live elsewhere, you must copy them in.
  • Booking follows your online booking rules. If those rules are loose, the AI books loosely. Tighten them first.
  • Setup takes a few pieces. You need the dedicated number, call forwarding from your current number, and a decision on the answering delay. Google Voice users must change a few settings, such as turning off call screening.
  • Emergencies need your rules. It escalates only on the keywords you add. If you forget "flooding", it will not treat that as urgent.
  • It is Jobber only. The dedicated phone number it needs is available only in the US, Canada and the UK, and it will not follow you to a different job management tool if you switch.
  • Jobber's companion feature, where the AI does the paperwork while you take the call, is listed as coming soon. Do not buy for it yet.

Jobber also says changes to your phone greeting may be reviewed and may not save if they appear to misrepresent your business. And it suggests, but does not require, telling callers that they are talking to an AI. I would tell them. Check your local rules on recording calls.

What are the other options?

  • GorillaDesk AI agents. GorillaDesk, a field service tool for pest, lawn and cleaning companies, has AI agents for phone, text, web chat and its customer portal. Its AI agents page lists $1.00 per completed informational conversation and $1.75 per completed conversation where the AI takes an action, such as capturing a lead or scheduling a booking.
  • Housecall Pro CSR AI. Housecall Pro, a Jobber competitor, offers CSR AI, a 24/7 call answering add-on. Its help center says the rest of its AI Team is included free with your account, and its pricing page does not show a CSR AI price, so check the price with Housecall Pro. My Housecall Pro AI guide has the detail.
  • A stand-alone AI receptionist. These work with many job tools. See my AI receptionist guide, my page on AI answering services for contractors, and the trade-specific version.
  • A human service. If you want a person, see plumbing answering services.
  • A cheaper first step. A missed-call text back sends an instant text when you miss a call. See missed call text back.
  • A custom AI receptionist connected to Jobber. This is a receptionist built to your rules that reads and writes to Jobber through its API (the way software talks to software). See the Jobber API for what that allows.

When a custom build does more

The built-in tool is best when your calls are simple: book a visit, take a message, answer where you work. A custom receptionist makes sense when calls need more thought. Examples: quoting a price from rules, checking a parts supply, sorting warranty calls from new work, or handling calls in two languages. It can also feed your own customer list, not just Jobber.

It also costs more to start. For most owners under five people, the add-on is the right first step. Learn the pattern of your calls with it, then decide whether the gaps are worth building for. If you are weighing options, the AI Strategy Sprint is a place to decide where to begin. For the wider picture, see AI for small business.

How I'd approach this

If you use Jobber, count your missed calls for two weeks first. Use the phone's call log. If you miss fewer than 30 real calls a month, the $29 add-on covers them, and one saved job may pay for it. Check the math with your own average job value.

Then do this in order. Tighten your online booking rules. Fill in the business profile with your real prices, hours and coverage area. Add escalation keywords for every emergency you handle. Forward only after hours at first, so you see how it behaves. Listen to the first 20 recordings yourself, and fix what it gets wrong.

A human still has to check the log, because the AI will sometimes mishear an address or book a job you would have turned down. If after a month you are hitting the same wall, that is the time to look at a custom build.

Questions people ask

How much does the Jobber AI Receptionist cost?

As of November 2026 it is $29 a month for 30 conversations, then $0.79 for each extra conversation. It is included, with unlimited use, on the Plus plan. See Jobber pricing for the plans.

Do I need a new phone number to use it?

You need a Jobber dedicated phone number, but you can keep your current business number and forward calls to it. Forwarding can be set for after hours or after a number of rings.

Can the Jobber AI Receptionist book jobs?

Yes. It books visits using your online booking settings, or it creates a work request for you to review. It can also take a message and create a follow-up task.

What happens when I reach the 30 conversation limit?

You choose. Either it keeps answering and you pay $0.79 for each extra conversation, or it pauses and only takes a message until your next billing cycle.

Is there a better AI receptionist than Jobber's?

It depends on your tools and calls. Housecall Pro and GorillaDesk have their own, and stand-alone ones work with many systems. Start with my AI receptionist comparison.

Can an AI receptionist replace a person?

For simple calls, mostly yes. For upset customers, complex quotes and emergencies, you still want a person to take over. Set escalation keywords so those calls reach you. My AI vs human receptionist page compares them.
