Missed call text back: how it works and how to set it up legally
Short answer: Missed call text back sends an automatic text to anyone whose call you miss, so the lead stays with you and can book by text. Tools such as Jobber Receptionist and Quo include it, as of October 2026. Before you send business texts from a normal 10-digit number, US carriers require A2P 10DLC registration. Keep the text about the caller's call, add a way to opt out, and get written consent before you send any marketing.
A call just rang out and you want to know whether an automatic text-back actually recovers the lead, and how to set one up without breaking texting rules.
I'm Ranjit, and I run Blur Studio: 15+ years building software, 120 apps taken live, and clients who have gone on to raise $10M+. I build AI systems and processes that help businesses do a lot more with a lot less time. I also work differently from most of what else is out there, more on that further down this page. Say hello.
What is missed call text back?
Missed call text back is a phone system feature. When a call to your business number goes unanswered, the system sends the caller an automatic text from that same number. The text says who you are and invites them to reply.
A reply by text is quick for the caller. The reply lands in your team's shared inbox, or an AI agent picks up the chat and books the job.
This matters more than it might seem. Industry analysis of service businesses, such as the 2026 breakdown published by Aloware, estimates that a majority of callers who reach voicemail or no answer at a small business will not call back, and that phone leads convert at a meaningfully higher rate than web form leads. Whatever the exact numbers for your business, every missed call that goes nowhere is a customer who may have just called a competitor instead.
How does missed call text back work?
The flow has these steps.
- A call comes in and nobody answers: You are busy, it is after hours, or every line is in use.
- The system sends a text: It goes out from your business number right after the call ends.
- The caller replies: They describe the problem or ask for a time.
- Someone answers the text: A team member replies, or an AI agent asks follow-up questions and books the visit.
- The record is saved: The call, text and booking go into your CRM or job software.
The basic version only sends a fixed message. The AI version keeps the chat going and can book into your calendar. The AI version helps most, because a text that nobody answers can still lose the lead.
What should a missed call text back message say?
Keep it short, clear and about their call. A good message has your business name, a reason for the text and a way to opt out.
Hi, this is Northside Plumbing. Sorry we missed your call. Reply here with what you need and we'll get back to you fast. Reply STOP to opt out.
Northside Plumbing is a made-up name for this example. Avoid coupons or offers in this first text. CTIA, the wireless industry group, notes that adding a promotion such as a coupon code can turn an informational message into a promotional one. Promotional texts need written consent.
What missed call text back software can you use?
Each price in this table is from the vendor's own pricing page, as of October 2026.
| Option | What it does | Starting price |
|---|---|---|
| Jobber Receptionist | AI answers calls and texts 24/7 and texts back callers who hang up. It books visits into Jobber. | $29 a month add-on to a Jobber plan |
| Quo (formerly OpenPhone) | Auto-replies to texts, missed calls and voicemails on all plans. Includes its Sona AI agent. | $15 per user a month, billed yearly, or $19 billed monthly |
| Twilio (build your own) | A messaging platform your developer uses to build the flow. | $0.0083 per text segment, plus carrier fees |
Quo also lists a one-time carrier review fee of $19.50 and a messaging fee of $1.50 to $3 a month, based on your use case. On Twilio, carriers add their own fee to each text. AT&T adds $0.0035 to each outbound text, for example.
If you run a home service business on Jobber, the Receptionist is the simplest choice, because the booking lands where your team already works. My guides to a plumbing answering service and an answering service for contractors show how this fits a trade business.
Do you need A2P 10DLC registration for business texting?
Yes, in most cases. A2P means application-to-person, which covers texts sent by software. 10DLC means a normal 10-digit long code phone number. Twilio describes A2P 10DLC as the standard that US carriers put in place for business texts sent from these numbers.
Twilio says anyone sending texts from a 10DLC number to the US through an app must register. Your texting provider handles the forms, but you supply the details. Registration has two steps.
- Register your brand: You give details about your business, so carriers can confirm you are a real sender. Standard brands need a Tax ID.
- Register your campaign: You explain what your texts are for and how people opt in, opt out and get help.
Twilio says registered numbers get lower message filtering and higher sending limits. Unregistered traffic from its 10DLC numbers carries extra carrier fees. Toll-free numbers and short codes have their own approval process outside the 10DLC system.
For a small business, Twilio offers a Sole Proprietor brand type with one campaign, and a Low-Volume Standard type for up to 2,000 daily segments to T-Mobile. Your provider will tell you which one fits.
How do you describe missed call text back in your campaign?
Be specific. Say that you text people who called your business number and did not reach anyone. Say the text is about their call only. Add your sample message, with the STOP wording. A vague campaign is more likely to be rejected.
What TCPA consent do you need for missed call texts?
The TCPA is the federal law on robocalls and robotexts. The FCC's rules under it set out who you can text and how people can opt out.
- Informational texts: The rules need the person's "prior express consent" before you send automated calls to a mobile number.
- Marketing texts: Texts that advertise or sell need "prior express written consent". That means a signed agreement, which can be electronic, that names the phone number. It must also say the person does not have to agree in order to buy.
- Opting out: People can withdraw consent in any reasonable way. A reply of "stop", "quit", "cancel" or "unsubscribe" always counts. You must honor it within 10 business days. You also can't make one opt-out method the only one you accept.
CTIA's guidelines add useful detail. When a consumer starts a text conversation and the business only replies, CTIA says no extra permission is expected. A missed call is a phone call, so the caller has reached out but has not texted you. The safe approach is to treat your text as a reply to their call and keep it to that one purpose. CTIA also says to send one final opt-out confirmation and no more texts after someone opts out.
In practice, follow these steps:
- Keep the first text about the call: No offers, no coupons, no newsletter sign-ups.
- Always include opt-out wording: "Reply STOP to opt out" is the standard phrase CTIA expects.
- Get written consent for marketing: Use a checkbox on your web form or booking page with clear wording.
- Log every opt-out: Make sure your system blocks future texts to that number.
What if an AI calls the person back?
Some tools follow a missed call with an AI voice callback. In February 2024, the FCC ruled that AI-generated voices are "artificial" voices under the TCPA. That means an AI voice callback needs the person's prior express consent. If the call markets anything, it needs prior express written consent.
This is general information about the rules. Ask a lawyer to review your texting flow if you plan to send marketing texts or run large campaigns.
How do you set up missed call text back?
- Pick your tool: Use the feature in your job software or phone system if it has one.
- Register for A2P 10DLC: Complete brand and campaign registration through your provider before you go live.
- Write your message: Include your business name, the reason for the text and STOP wording.
- Decide who replies: Assign a person, or set up an AI agent with clear rules on what it can book and promise.
- Set your hours: Decide if the text says something different after hours.
- Test it: Call your own number from a mobile, let it ring out, and check the text, the reply and the record.
When does a custom missed call text back system make sense?
A ready-made tool fits most small businesses. Jobber, Quo and many phone systems do this well enough.
A custom build is worth it when:
- Your phone system and job software don't connect: Texts and bookings end up in different places.
- You want an AI that knows your business: It should quote your call-out fee, check your schedule and book the right tech.
- You run several numbers or brands: Each needs its own message, hours and routing.
- Per-user fees grow: At a large team size, owning the tool can cost less.
- You want to own your data: Every text and lead stays in a system you control.
How would Blur Studio build a missed call text back flow?
I would start with your phone system, your job software and your current missed call rate. I would set up the text flow with proper A2P 10DLC registration and consent wording, then connect an AI agent that replies, asks the right questions and books into your software. Your business owns the code and the accounts, and I keep the flow running after launch. If a ready-made tool covers you, I will tell you, most small businesses are better served by one. My AI receptionist guide explains how the voice side works.
Questions people ask
What is missed call text back?
Missed call text back is a feature that sends an automatic text to anyone whose call to your business goes unanswered. The caller can reply by text, and your team or an AI agent picks up the chat.
Do I need A2P 10DLC registration to send missed call texts?
Yes, if you send texts through software from a normal 10-digit US number. Twilio says anyone sending app-based texts from a 10DLC number to the US must register a brand and a campaign.
Is missed call text back legal under the TCPA?
It can be, if you keep the text about the person's call, include opt-out wording and honor STOP requests within 10 business days. Marketing texts need prior express written consent.
How much does missed call text back cost?
As of October 2026, Jobber's Receptionist add-on is $29 a month and Quo starts at $15 per user a month billed yearly. Carrier registration and messaging fees are extra.
Can I put a discount in my missed call text?
It is safer to leave it out. CTIA says a coupon code can turn an informational text into a promotional one, and promotional texts need written consent.
Is missed call text back the same as a chatbot on my website?
No. A website chatbot talks to people already on your site. Missed call text back specifically responds to someone who called your business phone number and did not get through, reaching them on the channel they already tried.
What should happen if the texted-back caller describes an emergency?
Whoever or whatever is replying, a person or an AI agent, needs a clear rule to escalate immediately rather than keep texting back and forth. Decide upfront which words or situations should trigger an instant call or alert to staff, not just a reply.
Roughly what does this cost?
As a broad reference, fixes and finishes start at around $1,500, and new builds start higher, always a fixed price agreed in writing before I start, never an hourly rate. My AI app cost guide explains what actually drives a quote up or down.
Is my project too small for this?
No. Most of the owners I work with have no tech team at all, that is the whole point. If the smarter move is a cheap software subscription instead of custom software, I will tell you that on the first call, even though it means I do not get paid.
